This is a serious question, because I've not met a Republican who wasn't.
Are, by definition, Republicans Capitalists?

Not sure about "by definition" but l would say that all l have ever met were definitely free market capitalists

Sanity check for me Captain.
That's been my experience also.

That is a good question especially now when lots of young people are participating in the "Walk Away" movement and are looking at the GOP. It's good they have recognized flaws in the DNC and left leaning community, but they are turning to the GOP still with a "Democrat" mentality. Republican Atheists has had a couple fall outs with people who took interest in participating but eventually dropped out because they were very centrist, even leftist at times. They were borderline Republican, leaning Libertarian.

My understanding is that Republicans believe in minimum government control over our lives. I believe the federal government should provide national security and arbitrate issues affecting multiple states, and stay out of local politics.

Great definition.

Not all Republicans are Capitalists, if you define Capitalism as the private ownership of the means of production. I think the Republican party has shifted politically left in many aspects recently. We have a president who is advocating many anti-Capitalist policies and not protecting the rights of producers.

Hmm, that's interesting. What policies are you talking about in particular?

@Captain_Feelgood The policies I was thinking about are raising tariffs on imported goods, threatening companies who want to move their manufacturing overseas, giving subsidies to certain industries, and other interventions in the economy. Additionally, he is now threatening companies like Google, Twitter, and Facebook for political bias. I know he is not the first president to do such things, but he is certainly doing them.

Really? Give an example...

Yes I’d say that would be a requirement to be a Republican otherwise you would be a democrat. The democrat party in the last 10 years or so starting with Obama and particularly with Alexandria Ocasio Cortez and Bernie Sanders has drifted sharply to the left.

Trajan61 Level 8 Aug 29, 2018

True, but don't forget that at the same time Republicans have drifted to the right. And I think it started well before Obama.

@ldheinz John MCCain was a centerist Republican as a lot of the are. I don’t agree that the Republican Party is drifting right but the democrat party is definitely drifting left.

@Trajan61, there are many more extremist Republicans than there used to be, and the centrist Republicans don't speak up much for fear of being labeled RINOs. But I'll agree that many Democrats are going stark raving mad. Their stated positions are simply insane.

@ldheinz Yes the democrats are getting very radical.

Centrist Republicans like John McCain are a dying breed. He would have made a great President.

@ldheinz A hell of a lot better than the divider in chief and regulator nut job Obama!
