I have come to the conclusion that religion is a necessary part of being human. I've been an atheist my whole life and spent a great deal of it being an anti-theist and was delusional to think that one day we'd have an atheist majority world. This will NEVER happen. First of all, a percentage of the world's population have IQs so low that they would be considered borderline retarded in the West. You can see that the higher average IQ a country has, the less religious it is. The lower average IQ a country has, the more religious it is. But intelligence aside, religion will never die because people are tribal by nature, and the more civilized and modernized we become, the only thing that we will have to connect us to our "tribe" is religion. People are becoming more anti-social as time goes by and losing a sense of community. Religion is the only thing that gives people a sense of community and a feeling of being part of something great than themselves. You can also see this happening with leftists nowadays. They've replaced religion with far left politics and social justice activism. They treat their political beliefs as if they were a religion, and this is because they are empty inside. They do not have religion. They do not have community. Their politics are the ONLY thing that give them a sense of purpose and a community to belong to. I don't think humans will ever reach a point where they do NOT feel the need to belong to a community that makes them feel like they are part of something greater than themselves. This makes me sad, but I finally accept this truth. Humans need religion, or they will replace it with something else (e.g. politics in the case of leftists). I don't need religion personally but I do long for a community. What do you guys think?

I have come to similar understanding as well. I have been living in Sweden for years, one of the least religious countries in Europe. Sweden is one of the most anti-social countries in the world - people tend to stay to themselves, children can be incredibly shy, conversations are limited. People are so fearful to share their opinions, and have paid the price. There is little here that draws people together. As religion has diminished in Sweden, leftists have filled the void. I see many similarities between Sweden and US, but Sweden is ahead of the curve.

If you want to know the truth I actually love humanity. You are like sky stars in the sky. I don't care what you look like what race or politics if you chose. But I understand that without religion you choose something else to be a zealot with.

Great meme

Unfortunately I think your right. Trump recognizes that the conservatives can’t win without the support of the religous right and caters to them even though he’s likely not a Christain himself. I do know several people very well who are very intelligent and also religous so I don’t think being Christain also means you are less intelligent. It’s just been indoctrinated into them from an early age and they can’t break free from it.

"Tribal" is just another word for bigoted. Many areas are ignorant, not lacking in intelligence. People can get a sense of community based on many things, not just religion. I belong to many communities, but most of them are not geographic. The internet has freed us from that.

Tribalism absolutely IS a form of bigotry. Preferring one group over another is bigotry. Rooting for the home team is bigotry. Like being from a different area makes one bad?

@wolf_girl, what if that "community of people with shared values that are like your extended family" are all white people and you're white? Does that mean that you can only hire people that are in your "community of people with shared values that are like your extended family"? Is it OK to discriminate against people that aren't in your group?

@Wellspring, I don't know why you addressed that to me, as I didn't say anything about that and you didn't address what I said. I also disagree with most of what you said.
