A few days ago I went to REI to pick up some boots for a job I am starting shortly. I wanted something flexible and waterproof and with some support. I was helped by a guy who was okay, seemed to know his shoes but certainly not the great service I hear this company is supposed to have. After I found a boot that was good for me, he was no where to be found. It was like the room cleared out and so did customer service.
Needless to say, I have had this experience many times at REI. Does anyone else feel a little slighted or have some other experience like this?
I feel they look down their nose at me, because I am a large woman and obviously not active like a real REI customer should be or some other version of judgment.
I really don't enjoy shopping there, so expensive and so many egos.
BTW my spends just as well as the guy buying spandex gear.

Feel free to reply to any comment by clicking the "Reply" button.Sorry to hear that. I'm an REI member and have not had service issues there. Sometimes I buy stuff that doesn't work out as planned but they've always gladly allowed me to return the item.
My worst REI story is once I bought an REI brand boot because I had a summer of serious hiking planned. By the end of the summer the boots were trashed. I was very disappointed in them. They didn't hold up well at all. I paid almost $200 for them and expected some real performance but got much better performance out of the $36 pair I bought at a local Duhnam's store on the cheap. (I still have and love these $36 boots by the way).
I brought the boots into REI the next summer just before I was planning to hike Mt. Rainier. I told them my story and they refunded me the purchase price which I then used to supplement an upgraded pair of non-REI boots which have lasted and performed well but honestly still don't like as much as my good 'ol $36 Duhnam's boots.
