Today Karen and I hiked to the summit of Mission Ridge Ski Area, Wenatchee. WA. We went up steep ski runs, gaining 2,255' in elevation over 8.3 miles total.
A great leg-builder. My legs are shot.
The summit is at 6,755' elevation. Gorgeous views for skiers and hikers. Photos:
Mt.Stuart, 9,416', from the summit of Mission Ridge.
Extremely rare Tweedy's Lewisia only grows in North Central Washington, at certain elevations and exposures. It's like Hawaii! My favorite wildflower.
Glacier Peak, 10,000', from the summit.
Marsh Buttercups growing in a marshy area by a stream. We have never seen these flowers at Mission Ridge Ski Area.
An unusual Lupine flower. Lupine are usually .
What one has to go through to see a few pretty flowers. This reminds me of some funny stories: I recently went on a BLM project to Henry Island. We had to transverse a hill which is a pain. Sometime ago a friend mention an animal called a side-hill gouger [en.wikipedia.org]
A number of years ago my late partner, I and a friend from Iowa went to Mt. Rainier for a hike. Us 2 guys charged ahead and left her behind (she also had short legs). We were too busy talking to pay attention. We finally stopped and waited and when she caught up she started calling us a Chamouse [en.wikipedia.org] She called us that many times and anytime I got ahead I would get this name (that's why I still remember it).
Jack, Happy birthday!
While hiking, I love high mountain vistas of snow-capped mountains, jagged peaks, azure alpine lakes and white glaciers.
If I just wanted to see flowers, I'd walk around the neighborhood.
"Don't slog in the bog. Get high on the ridges!" has been my hiking motto since age 21.
Wow, are my quadriceps sore! Caught my breath in pain at first while stretching this morning.
Hard Vasque boots badly blistered the outside of my baby toes. This always happens with Vasque boots. Descending, it felt like my baby toes were bleeding. Must order my beloved Lowa boots.
F-ck me!" I muttered, clawing up a steep ski run near the top. It was so steep, I couldn't stand up.
Of course Karen mentioned my swearing. "It means, 'Good heavens, I'm in a real pickle,'" I replied. Somehow, that don't have the same satisfying, emphatic ring.

Posted by CallMeDaveI've never been a big wildflower person, but this is the season for it here in Appalachia. Other people can identify every variety. I'm not there yet.
