I do a lot of hiking on the D&R canal, and my goal is to explore every inch of it. I hike wherever I can and I typically like to do at least 5 to 10 miles.

OK this wasn't quite a hike - it was a long ride but I managed to catch these crossing the Huron River near Ann Arbor. Really a spectacular scene.

Was given a well used and abused kayak today. Took it out to see if it would even hold water and it did great. I can't wait to spend more time on the lakes around here this summer!

I'm in a tent in the Smokey Mtns park as I write this. There is an owl trying to drown out the bugs. Tomorrow or Saturday the first tentative voyage of the atheist navy will take place on the Nantahala River. Waiting on the first mate to arrive.

So I don't so much go on hikes as I do drive out to the desert and wander about looking for rocks. It gets interesting walking a few miles into a canyon with a pick, shovel, and various hammers and chisels only to have to bring all that stuff back ...

Yesterday I built a nesting platform that I hope will house an osprey family this spring. If so, look for more photos around March. I spliced two 10' poles together and used a shipping crate for the platform. I worked alone with ropes to hoist it.
