I’m looking for another way to describe my work m, that doesn’t invoke elvish fiction i.e. ‘Fantasy’. I’ve always had a problem with being labeled a fantasy writer because I hate fantasy, and I have zero interest in it. Is there another word less invoking of Tolkien?
Is science fiction still a valid term if the story contains artificial mechanisms not native to the natural laws of science?
Depends on the style of writing. The term 'Magical Realism' is used for authors such as Gabriel García Márquez or Ben Okri who produce a style of fantasy clearly nothing to do with Tolkien or Harry Potter, but I'm not sure that sounds like what you are writing. Alternatively 'Science Fantasy' is used for things which are superficially sciency, but essentially fantastical in nature, such as Star Wars. Science Fiction can be pretty bendy about adherence to the laws of nature (cf Doctor Who), with authors who stick very closely to the possible being called 'Hard Science Fiction' (eg Ben Bova). Of course your writing is an expression of your own thoughts, and doesn't have to fit in with anybody else's preconceptions, though this isn't very helpful if you're trying to sell your stuff. I'd be fascinated to see some of your writing.
