Sue drove into the driveway and saw the flowers straight away, behind the metal gate, by the back door.
They’d had a massive row last night, Chris must be sorry. Thank goodness, she’d said some awful things.
She put the shopping in the house, and went and grabbed them.
They’d been together for a couple of years, and were very much in love still, but sometimes things got tough, relationships aren’t all love and roses.
Sue picked up the flowers and smiled, but her face soon changed seeing what was in the wrapper; some fairy’s breath; blue green foliage; and yellow roses!
Chris knew they symbolised friendship, this really wasn’t what Sue was expecting, her stomach dropped. She walked inside in shock. Had she failed to see the signs? She had no idea things were over. She opened the tiny attached envelope, with her name and address on. It said,
‘Thank you for everything’.
Wow, gutted! Sue made herself a cup of tea, trying not to be too devastated, she was supposed to pick Chris up from work tonight...now what?
She didn’t want to overreact and call her at work, but didn’t feel confident in her ability to compose a calm text message at the moment.
Sue made a cup of tea and sat down with a partly eaten pack of biscuits, eating absent minded-ly.
About 15 minutes later Chris sent through a picture on her phone, it was an image of her bouquet with red roses instead of yellow, with a caption,
‘Do they look like the ones on the tin ’
Sue looked up the florist’s number, called and asked,
‘Please can you tell me if any of the flowers in the arrangement that you delivered me got changed?’
The woman said,
‘I’ll have to look that up, it will take me a minute, can I get your address, name and number and I’ll call you back?’
Sue agreed and within a minute her phone rang,
‘Hello Sue? Yes, the roses were swapped, sorry, we didn’t have enough red and so they were changed, there is a clause in the small print, sorry about that, everything else is the same as the picture online. Is everything ok?’
‘Yes’, said Sue, ‘everything is fine, thank you’.
Suddenly the yellow roses were looking a lot better.
Sue decided that she was up to composing a text now.
