Yes,it was.
that can be a gratifying task but it's hard work and takes time and effort. therefore, when i do that, i do not work for free. you have not mentioned compensation.

we'll be homeless soon since we can't afford it.
that's neither here nor there; even if we were comfortable, why should hard work not be compensated? no one asks a plumber to work for free!
