First lines: Think about how the gender perspective changes your initial thought of the story to follow.

So, she says, "I love you. . . . Just saying." How could she not?

So, he says, "I love you. . . . Just saying." How could he not?
I would interpret the first one as being from the point of view of a man who was perhaps a little too much into himself; and the second as the POV of a woman who is in a relationship with said man, where the man has already committed to her. It sets it up for asking "is a betrayal going to happen?" or "she is beginning to doubt him"
Suppose you back up a few paces and try that again with a bit more clarity?
I heard "I love you....Just sayin." in an episode of an aussi tv show i'm watching.
He didn't say, "How could she not?" That's what i thought his thought might be given how he has been portrayed, as an arrogant ass.
I often test switching gender perspectives when working on stories. And as with my example, i most often find the woman as first person can be more exploratory, inciteful, and humorous.
When i can't get to work on an existing project, i grab a statement from a post and play with it as a first line.
