A few weeks back I was at my regular weekly writers meet up in the pub and somehow, we got into a discussion about video games. The consensus by several was that video games are either overly violent or stupid (or both). There was also the view that ‘mods’ are about inserting female characters with too much boob and too little clothing.
Being a lifelong gamer and budding video game jurno I felt compelled to rally to video game’s defence. I conceded that some games and mods are guilty on all counts, but countered by stating that not all games and mods are even remotely similar to these low brow digital trash.
I suggested that some video games are as deep, thought provoking and well written as any novel, play, film, TV show etc.
Unfortunately, these finely written games do not get much media attention, thus non-gamers are usually unaware of them. This leads non-gamers to have a skewed perspective of games as a whole due to a restricted sample size. As an example, imagine someone judging books as medium based solely on some of its trashiest examples, such as '50 Shades', because that was the only book they had heard of in the press or seen on TV.
