Just one of those simpleminded Jacobs observations. The question I see adrift in the sea of questions on self improvement for authors is: What are some simple sentence hacks I can use to improve my writing?
Use fewer words. Use more effective words. Choose them wisely. Make better use of what words are chosen. Yep, it's that easy.
Don't know if I'd call it easy. To some people writing what they want to write comes easily. There are younger people in the writers' group I go to who in an exercise timed at 10 minutes flat can write three pages of flowing narrative with dialogue thrown in and it's all in a coherent storyline. Not me. Others find it very much harder to write something that pleases themselves (me). I sometimes change word order within a sentence, definitely the order of the phrases to be more effective, and with a view to rhythm. Conciseness comes into it, but at the same time repetition can be called for. Using fewer words as a cast-iron truism used to be a thing with me -- but I think I spent far too long influenced by this quirk of Hemingway's. If you know good words, use 'em.
