Here is a little story out of my life that was jarred back to memory because of a post on doing believable dialogue. In the late 1950s I worked with my dad on material for the Capitol Records house organ, Music Views Magazine and other things in the music business, but I wanted most to write creative fiction---particularly Science Fiction.
I made acquaintance with another fellow with similar interests and we began to work together on some short stories. Our collaboration worked well. Unfortunately, we lived several miles apart, I in North Hollywood and he in West LA, so we rented a room in a cheap motel about at the halfway point. Remember, those were times when we worked with old Underwood mechanical typewriters we'd found in pawn shops. Only snail mail was available. There were no computers, and we had no Skype.
We would test our dialogue by carrying out the conversations of our characters verbally and with appropriate emotion, removing all narrative insertions. There, in that two-bit motel, we would work out new ideas and hone our dialogue.
Imagine our surprise when, during one such session, the police knocked on the door. A person in an adjacent room heard this horrible argument containing the most gruesome of threats and called the police.
Just one of those moments in the life of a writer.
1950s? Let's see... "Take me to your leader, Earthling."
"Lead me to your taker, Earl thing."
interesting incident
At first, embarrassing. After reading the part of the ms we had been reading, we, the two cops, and the couple next door roared in laughter for some time. I wasn't privy to their response to dispatch regarding the incident, but I'll bet it was interesting too.
