WARNING: WINDED BIOGRAPHICAL STUFF AHEAD.
When I was a kid, I wanted to get my thoughts out to others. In that era before the internet, that met getting stuff in print. So I taught myself to type. Sure, it was two finger typing, which I still use to this day, but at the same time I can do about 30-35 WPM.
I never questioned my need to get my thoughts to others: it was always instinctive, like breag.
I started out with carbon copy newsletters, and, in high school, I graduated to ditto. Ditto was a limited volume printing method that printed out in purple.
I did an underground magazine called "Spider," where I made fun of high school life, and the school administrators. I got a two week suspension for that. And thus began my publishing career.
And then I discovered science fiction fandom. They had something called "fanzines" (fan magazines), which covered anything and everyg, and were sent out to readers, who wrote letters back. I'd found a home.
Somewhere a the line I acquired something all writers must get: a complete inability to shut the hell up.
I started LISFAN, fanzine for the TV show "Lost in Space," LISFAN went through eight issues over the course of 16 years. IIt was so popular that a publisher contacted me. Issues 7 and 8 were published by Alpha Control Press, which got it into bookstores.
I self published a book "You Can Build the Lost in Space Robot," which went through four editions.
I did a few more books for my publisher, including a book about "The Time Tunnel" TV series.
And then my moneymaker: a massive compendium called "The Lost in Space Encyclopedia." The first edition was over 400 pages; the second was over 500 pages. I was working on the third edition when my publisher died.
Now, one word about the guy: he'd call me on the phone, complaining that there was no money top do this or that project. But, always, as if by magic, the money always came in. I wish I had his skills at that.
The third edition of "The Lost in Space Encyclopedia" is out now on DVD ROM, and the page count is over 600.
Right now I satisfy my need to express myself with my website, and forums such as this one.
And that's how I got here.
