Words that have probably been said many times but here they are again...just to make sure...The thing about writing stories is every author has their own method, a method which probably took years to develop. Still, new writers can learn from the more experienced and inject parts of proven methods into their own. I also believe that authors don't always make good editors so I think it wise that the last read should be done by someone other than the author.
obviously. Hemingway had an editor. They're essential for the process.
I would add one phrase and say most writers need an editor THEY CAN TRUST -- who can easily relate with their style and contribute to its spirit. Don't know if Hemingway is a typical case, as many of his short stories (at least the ones I read in the olden days) seem not much more than reportage. I tried to emulate him for many years and found it fatal. Gore Vidal referred to him as in the mode of "Field and Stream".
@Garbonza vidal tended to be contemtuous of others
@TheDoubter Still, Vidal did say why he thought Hemingway was so vastly overrated. I personally would like to be reminded of Hemingway's virtues as a writer, as the only one I remember is "economy of language".
