I am wondering if any of you or others have had experience in collaborative creative processes such as the teaming of a writer, editor, and illustrator? Has this been successful and how did you go about creating the group?
I've only had two experiences of being copy editor, rewriter and proofreader (all three) for purported "authors" who were both con men at heart. I was burned both times to the tune of $600 and $1,600 (which instance also lost me other ongoing benefits). One of them was a former university "professor" whom I thought I knew pretty well. But he had been in and out of psychiatric hospitals, and moreover was still seriously deluded and so could justify any morality (or lack of it) to himself. The other was a lawyer from western Virginia (not W. Virginia) who called me his co-writer and lifesaver, at a distance. He drew up this massive contract, manipulated me into varying from the timeline of the contract -- that is, I rewrote, edited and proofread all at the same time, then didn't pay me anything at all. He too could somehow justify it to himself. -- There are always ways for a "collaborator" to get around a contract too if he's a slimy enough operator. I am currently arranging self-publication in Florida with Booklocker.com -- online and print-on-demand -- of a short stories anthology for some members of my local writers group here in Auckland (no, not Oakland), which will probably necessitate an extra outlay for me up front, and I wouldn't even consider this unless I knew them socially outside of the writing sphere and trusted them.
Only when I was out of work for a while and was lucky enough to be able to attend the university of the third age, we were a mixed group and fed back on each other’s writing.
