I have written a lot of fiction, mostly for small press publications. I decided it was time to branch out, and try getting published professionally.
But where to submit? I decided that I didn't care for being rejected. I figured that if I submitted to a publication with very low standards that I would stand a good shot at getting published. And what was the lowest of the low? "Hustler" magazine, I figured.
So I wrote my story for them. I won't go into great details; suffice it to say it was about an unusual transplant, conducted by a mad scientist named Dr. Pennyfarthing. The story had a tomato surprise ending, which I felt would be suitable for such a publication.
I submitted the story and waited. There was no way it was going to be rejected, I felt.
And then the reply came, in a large manila envelope with the letters LFP: Larry Flynt Publications on it. I opened it up, hoping to see a check fall out.
It was my story, along with a rejection letter. I was crushed.
I learned a couple of things that day:
I should have aimed high. If I had submitted to, say, "Esquire," or "The New Yorker," and been rejected, I wouldn't have felt so bad. But "Hustler?" Yow.
Getting rejected by the lowest of the low means one thing: I'm not ready for prime time. I haven't submitted anything since.
