Okay, so a friend sent me a greeting with the words, "Oh what a beautiful morning, O what a beautiful day." That reminded me of something I wrote, so I dug through my piles of crap and found it. Written way back when we had a major problem with drainage in Los Angeles caused by trash that had been dumped in the LA River and clogging most of the outlets. So long ago, I don't remember when it was, but it inspired me to produce one of my magnificent and epic lyrics set to the tune of Oh What a Beautiful Morning.
The Sewer Song
There's a dense, dingy fog o'er the city,
There's a smell in the air that ain't pretty,
The sewers backed up with an odorous goo,
An' it looks like it's gonna come out this way too.
Oh what a terrible mornin',
Oh what a frightenin' day,
I've got a horrible feelin',
Everythin's comin' my way.
All the people are runnin' so quickly,
To escape from that odor so sickly,
They don't turn their heads as they run right on by,
An' I'm packin' my bags as the odor draws nigh.
Repeat chorus
Oh the screamin' of people in panic,
An' the honkin' of horns sounds so frantic,
The smell is so bad that I cain't hardly see,
An' the car wouldn't start, why's this happ'nin' to me?
Repeat chorus
~J. Richard Jacobs
Recently London had its "Fatberg" clogging the sewer. A sample was claimed for display in one of the museum's and from memory I think it took the workers ten days to shovel it out - that's what I call "spinning the job out". Equally interesting is the fauna living in the fatberg ranging from bacterial through flies to rat's.
I seriously recommend all to read the following article as you could have contributed to it:
Part of monster sewer fatberg goes on display at London museum | Culture | The Guardian [theguardian.com]
@FrayedBear -- The backup in LA was bad enough. Fatberg on display. Yuck.
@evidentialist But it is interesting in that the sewers were among the first in the world, and never had fat build-up until very recent times. It indicates the the tremendous swing in the popular diet - towards unhealthy, fatty foods.
