Just discovered this group ... I am into twisted stories ... Until about about 7 or 8 years ago I was stuck with "plausibility" , but the discovery of Karel Capek's writing stripped me of that internal reluctance.
Since then I rave, albeit very secretively, on about they weirdest options. Ok ... For those, who read this but don't know about good old, but unfortunately dead, Karel, we - and this is a rather inclusive we - owe him the term "robot". Karel told that it was his brother Joseph who suggested the term. Karel wrote the visionary piece "Rossum's Universal Robots".
I was sucked in by his "War with the Newts (not Gingrich)" and became addicted to his ideas when I sucked in "The Absolute at Large".
The War with the Newts has also been published under "War with the Salamanders".
If you ever want to make a point about people's minds being fogged or partially paralysed by religion, this story is a brilliant tool.

In 1726 the fossil was "identified" by a Swiss naturalist, Johann Scheuchzer, and labeled "Homo diluvii testis" (The human who witnessed the deluge). Scheuchzer "knew" that the bible story was authentic. Finally, in 1811, the French zoologist and "founding father of paleontology" father identified the error and identified the fossil as Andrias scheuchzeri.
Thank you for this! A similar creature made fossilized footprints on an Island off the Kerry coast of Ireland called the tetrapod trackway and it was an important bit of evolutionary evidence, as it was one of the earliest links between land animals and sea animals, see here for more: [thehsi.org]
Thank you ... Very cool area ... Never made it to the Green Isle. Please don't tell anyone, but when I grew up I thought of the Irish as being some sort of rustic version of the stiff poms.
