We keep doing it right but what about our elected leaders. Why aren't they doing enough instead of partying with lobbyists for their money? What has Biden done for teachers since Jan 2021?
273kelvin replies on Sep 8, 2021:
@St-Sinner Old joke sums up so much. An American asks an old Irish guy "Can you tell me how to get to Cork?" "Well if I were you. I would not have started from here" From what I understand, the infrastructure bill is a start and a hesitant one at that but a start. Although just to put it into perspective. China is spending 5 times as much on infrastructure,,, not in China but in Africa and not as a Chinese only project but in conjuncture/consultation with international bodies.

@redbai Ffs do you guys really need several court hearings and a supreme court judgement every time to dot all the "I" s? @redbai The question was; "Would you be more or less anxious in a plane if you knew that the pilot was a devout Christian/Muslim? The obvious point of the question is - believing pilot or non-believing pilot because if the fact that a believing pilot causes you any increased anxiety? Then the alternative is obviously atheist.

There`s a guy I mentioned a few times, James Lovelock, Co-creator of the Daisyworld simulation on climate. Anyway, in a previous job he worked at the common cold centre. His conclusions were that colds were spread by surface contact rather than being airborne. However, the good news on COVID is that surface contact is very slight. Recent tests on UK mainline train stations found hardly any COVID virus on any of the common surfaces like stair rails etc.

Afganistan is not a member because we fucked them up as well. Despite/because of the fact that their only major industry/export is smack dealer to the world. If you examine the USA's record there, then it is on par. So Russia goes in and the US floods the place with guns (because guns solve everything, right?) after 8 years of civil war (in which Bin laden paid/supplied by the US). Not one jot of reconstruction aid or assistance came from the US. Then after 9/11, you got another 20 years of death and destruction. Imagine you are a 55-year-old Afgan? All of your life has seen US arms killing your people. The Taliban are terrible but at least they are stable -ish. Given the choice which way would you go to keep your family safe? By debate, I mean a level playing field, equal time and muted mics when an opponent tries to shout over you. In other words the 2nd presidential debate. The fact that Carlson is popular means nothing other than a testament to the gullibility of the American people. I bet there are tons of Americans that think that wrestling is real too. I have never seen him take on and win against anyone from the US left (ie Christian democrat or social democrat, coz that's as far as you guys go) and win. Sure he will shout them out, cut their mic or "well that's all we have time for". But win? no. Like Emperor Marcus Aurelius, he will only agree to face blunt swords.

@Gator I agree that Trump probably would have been re-elected had not COVID happened. However, that is not saying much. The incumbent has a historical 3-1 advantage over any challenger. Also, as I think I may have stated before, without Hitler invading Poland, Churchill would have been just a footnote in history. The fact is that it did happen and Trump was not only found to be extremely deficient but actively harmful. Even at the end of his term, he kept quiet about being personally vaccinated. As to him not achieving much. He did not have a lot of policies, to begin with. A lot of general platitudes like "Draining the swamp" (ironic as many think his administration has been the most corrupt since Harding). As for one term, more like 1/2 a term if you factor in his work hours and golf trips. The things he did enact were low hanging fruit like tax cuts for the mega-rich. Due to the payola nature of American politics, this passed like prunes on all-bran. But his wall, for which he had a mandate did not. Why? well, there ain't no money in that for big corps, that's why. I agree that Biden is not ideal. Yes, he is getting on a bit and not the man he was. As for the Manchurian candidate? I think that might apply more to Trump and the pee-pee tape than Biden. Certainly, his record on Russia backs that up. That fact is that Biden is not Trump and that was all he needed. Just like Carter was not Nixon or the GOP that put him there. In that respect, you cannot call him out for choosing a strong team of advisers to help him. Moreover, it is totally absurd to call him in any way progressive. There is a raft of popular bills that the Dems could and should enact but he refuses to end the filibuster. These include a $15 min wage and universal health care. Which if you fact-check, you will find that the vast majority of Americans want. Again we see the hand of big money in US legislation.

@Gator Okay Gator I would ask you to consider this. As you can see I am a Brit living in the UK so I don`t get Fox or CNN. No Tucker or Medrow, just the facts mam, just the facts. This is how the Reps look like now; Imagine you are watching a debate between a fundamentalist Christian and nearly anyone off this site. Let's call them C and Ag respectively. C is arguing that the earth is only 6,500 years old and god made it all. Ag has fossil records, carbon dating, all of the science etc. But C always comes back with "The bible says". The same book that has talking snakes etc... Now on one hand you have a man of dubious character, previous grift (Trump University) and proven serial liar. On the other the facts: Firstly you have the fact that Trump was a reality-TV star. Who does those things? Do really successful people at the top of their game do it? No. The real deal guys are too busy doing it to have cameras around them 24/7. So you get Ozzy Osborne, not Kieth Richards and you don't get Branson or Bezos you get Trump or Arnie. Trump did not win the popular vote in 2016 against the worst candidate since McGovern. Trump lost the house in 2018. Trump did have a successful economy but on the back of sound financial programmes by Obama and at the cost of vastly increasing the nat. debt. Trump lost the election to Biden (Marginally better than Hillary but not by much). Trump lost the senate. Jan 6th!!! Under his watch, the USA experienced huge civil unrest from both sides. The buck stops with him, especially when he sought to fan the flames. His management of the pandemic has been abysmal. He turned public health issues into political footballs and the USA lost lives (and is still losing them). He has and still is, destroying faith in American democracy. At no time since the civil war has America been in so much turmoil. As the captain of that ship, the responsibility lies solely with him. Now should you wish to respond to these facts? I would ask you to counter them with facts also, not the equivalent of "The bible says" PS. No whataboutism either

@bbyrd009 Grrrrr! You have obviously never been taught how to drink a good whiskey. (You're a Yank so it`s understandable). Cold dulls the taste. This is why lager is so bland. To drink a single malt properly, it should be at room temperature. You may add a little mineral water if you desire (also at room temp). After taking in the colour and aroma, the first sip should be slowly rolled around your pallet. As it warms, all the hidden flavours come to light like a good looking woman undressing before your eyes.
Massive spoiler alert.

@HippieChick58 What nothing scary? No Hitchcock etc, just Jennifer Anniston and Disney movies? All stories have the same basic theme, protagonists - adversity - triumph. Without the fear element in the adversity part, then there is not that much adversity. Horror accentuates the fear element so that the triumph is the greater. Dr Who is a rather unique hero. An alien being in love with humanity but unlike US comic-book types like Superman, he (now she) always needs the help of ordinary people to save the world. So we can all identify with the protagonists. This episode drags you in brilliantly. Give it 5 -10 minutes and see. Ps, If you do watch it, I will take one of your recommendations.

Definitely, Daleks got nuthin over Angels.
273kelvin replies on Mar 23, 2021:
@Triphid These are post-Darlek monsters. That`s what makes this my favourite episode. The Darleks are scary on a philosophical, vocal and (to a degree, stairs used to beat them) physical level. The weeping angels are so more cinematic and visual. Two major reasons for this. Firstly, a huge increase in production values and most importantly my second point, the writing. The guys who made this episode were the kids that hid behind the sofa to the Darleks. These are post-Darlek monsters. "How can I make a scarier monster than the Daleks?" You can hear Stephen Moffet think in his bedroom. Weeping monsters are just that. They include both children and adults fears. The scariest thing is a child bedroom when they are afraid to close their eyes. The biggest adult fear is that of a stolen future. The fact that the Doctor is sent back to 1969 is deliberate. The age of Aquarius turned to global warming. Tell me what is scarier than that?

As in all these things, we cannot be 100% sure of any long term effects. We can only be as sure as we can make it. However, considering the short and long term effects of COVID-19 itself, it is a risk worth taking.

@azzow2 The pharmaceutical companies do not write the rules. They are set down by international standards with some regional differences. These are published and peer-reviewed. @Admin Let us look at his words in true context... When armed militia entered the state capitols of Michigan and other states. He called them "Patriots" When asked to condemn the Proud Boys in the debate he said "Stand down and stand by" (Stand by for what we might ask?) After the election, he continued to espouse misinformation of voter fraud. To the extent that hardly any of his base believe that the elections were fair. Even though no proof has come to light and BOTH of his appointees in the DOJ and DHS said there was none. He refused to condemn the attempted kidnapping of the Mi governor. He then called on his supporters to come to Washington for a "Stop the steal" rally. ( A clear violation of the Hatch Act but we kinda stopped worrying about little niceties like that ages ago) (At this point any responsible person might think that there might be some trouble and maybe tone down the rhetoric, however...) On the day of the rally when Gulliani called for "Trial by combat". Trump son says "We are coming for you". Trump then ... “This egregious assault on our democracy,” he said his supporters should “walk down to the Capitol.”— “We are going to cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women,” he continued, “and we are probably not going to be cheering so much for some of them — because you will never take back our country with weakness.” (Exactly where was he expecting his supporters to be cheering from? A respectful distance, all 6 feet apart through muffled masks at closed windows?) With all this one MUST bear in mind that he is not just some guy, He is the POTUS. His words carry weight (if no substance). You call a mob to come to Washington. Knowing full well that far-right elements and a lot of angry people will be there. (You cannot tell me that there were no security briefings about what might happen.) Then you tell them to walk to the capitol and "you will never take back our country with weakness.” Well just what the f*ck did he think was going to happen? Oh and after it did happen "We love you...You are very special people." Okay let me put this another way; There is a guy at the local bar going on and on about how there is a paedo in our community. He says that the police will do nothing and then goes into graphic detail about the acts he alleges have been happening. All night he rants on about this guy and when the bar is about to close he says; Let's walk round to the guy's house and show him how we feel about him. Adding "We have to show strength here" So then a mob breaks into the guy's house and beats him to death. To what extent was that ranter responsible?
In these troubling times some laughter.

Tommy is in line and the Queen spends a minute talking to him then moves on. Cooper then calls out "Excuse me, ma'am" "Pardon?" "Excuse me" "Yes" As she walks back to address him the whole entourage has to back up down the line. "Do you like football?" "Not particularly no, why do you ask?" @JeffMurray Like I said, we know all this but the MAGAs cling to the lie that the 60 cases were not heard because of procedural/standing issues. In a criminal case, the defendant is entitled to mount a defence and all their so-called evidence of fraud would be admissible. Unlike the Senate hearing, their expert witnesses that claim statistical impossibilities would be subject to cross-examination and rebuttal witnesses. Their sworn affidavits and eyewitnesses open to scrutiny. A similar thing happened in the UK with Diana's death. It achieved 2 things. Firstly it showed why you should not let grieving relatives near the judicial system. Secondly, it gave a free airing to all the conspiracy theories and let then shrivel in the light of day. In it, a comic version of Kellyanne Conway played by Lisa Kudrow talks about how conservative voices are being silenced, "I've said it again and again how conservative voices are being silenced. I said on CNN, on ABC, Newsmax, I said it twice on fox and in my bestselling book "How conservative voices are being silenced".

Okay, let us imagine that the authorities did their job properly and security had been beefed up the way it should have been? What happens next? After a night-long pissing contest at the barriers, The MAGA hats go home and Trump remains. The GOP is left with a volatile idiot waning star. Now I am ...

@JeffMurray If the police repelled the insurection? Then we still would be left with Trump and Trumpism as a very significant force. As it stands now, Repubs can do a kinda Meatloaf. (I have been loyal ...but I won't do that). From now on Trump will haemorrhage support. It has been the fastest way to make him a has-been.

@JeffMurray I am NOT saying that this was not Trumps doing. What I am saying was that he was set up to fail. That there were lots of people in the administration that could have made a point of beefing up the security but did not and their motives were not pro-Trump.

Except we're not hearing support from Senate Republicans for conviction of impeachment, so that doesn't sound like it could be right. They could easily condemn the behavior and pledge their support for removal but they haven't and they likely won't. They still support him because they are disgusting...

Don't forget the local cops -- the anti-democrat, own-the-libs, right-wing, cops.😡 Edit: Change that to Capitol Police and local cops.

I agree. This looks like something fishy. To call it insurrection would mean there was a plan to take over the government. Obviously, noone had a plan beyond that initial storming. This was a capitol riot. And there may have been coordination, but that would be determined by investigation. So Dems ...

Such a surreal period. Obviously an attempted power grab with planning and coordination. Not sure what would have happened if they got hold of pence and Pelosi. Bet we won’t know all the details for years.

I wouldn't say it's a conspiracy. When you watch the video of cops opening the doors for the rioters to enter the building, that pretty much turns "theory" into fact.

@JeffMurray "He still dictates how the vast majority of Republican votes will be cast" ?? Does he? Hardcore MAGAs like the proud boys are disgusted at his betrayal in the invaders. MOR Trumpists are ditto at the invaders. Sure there are some die-hards left but his star has fallen big time and the GOP (and the American people) are the winners.
