The problem with Peterson's argument is common to most theists. In that, they cannot conceive of people being good for its own sake. There has to be self-interest involved. "If I am good I will go to heaven, therefore, I will be good." This is their logical explanation of why they are good. Even in the case of atheists, they claim that it is the residual effects of religious doctrine that keeps society in check. All societies have laws against murder, rape, theft, etc. The deterrents of which may be dependent on detection, penalties, and poverty. But what makes us kind? You are in a lift as the door is closing you hold it open for someone who is approaching. It will delay you slightly but you do something nice for somebody. You don't know them but it makes you feel good about yourself. He would claim that this is the golden rule in action and without that you would have let the door close. I say that the golden rule would have evolved into being without having to be written down in a holy book. It makes common sense that a society that encourages that kind of behavior will be more successful than a rude and selfish one. Alright, what about the individual? The top needs of humans are Air. water, shelter, sex, and social interaction. If you are the kind of person that lets the door close? Then you will be less successful with the last two of these.

It depends on your definition of original. We all live within the mythos. That collective of all human civilization and thought. From Aristotle, Jesus, Newton, Einstien to Marx (both Karl and Groucho). Any thoughts or ideas are built on and part of that mythos. Take chess for an example; I look at my bookshelf and see a row of opening books (now well out of date). Yet new moves are produced all the time. These could be described as original thoughts but only as an addition to the temple of Casia. On the shoulders of giants. Put another way. Paul McCartney wakes up one morning with this tune called "Scrambled eggs" in his head. He goes to George Martin and asks if this is something he has heard before, as it seems very familiar. George, who knew his stuff says "No that's original". Words are added and it is of course "Yesterday". Now is that new or can it only be heard through the filter of western a 12 semi-tone octave and 8 notes to a key ear? Could you theoretically play "Yesterday" to a cave-man and have him dig it? As Marionville has stated Uganda was based on the UK system. Here is my experience with it. I went to a church of England (C of E) state school. It has often been mentioned that the C of E is an inoculation against religion. My experience was thus. Morning assembly constituted school news followed by prayers and hymns. Where gods love would be attempted to be instilled into you by the same sadistic bastards who would quite happily smack your hand with a ruler for any and all infractions of rules or insubordination. Hymns would be mouthed and mumbled through, only when something caught our attention like "Jerusalem" or the odd Christmas carol, could we be arsed giving any voice. R.E. (religious education) was 1-hour compulsory mixed bag. Primary school, the basics of Christianity. Later we got an ex-missionary who was quite free-thinking and would open up discussions on such subjects as abortion. Surprisingly, taking the pro-choice stance. After him, we ended up with a last chance no-hope teacher. who we all knew was only there fill in the hour. Add to all this, interminable, dia Sundays. TV limited to late evening and all the shops/pubs closed. This has left me and most of my contemporaries with a healthy contempt for the god squad. I am not bitter or spiteful. If someone wants to walk that road? then good luck to them but I will be in the pub. Which thankfully is now open all day Sunday.

It is only a simple question if you can only accept simple answers. For example; "Why is the sky blue?" "Because god made it blue" or "It is the refraction of sunlight caused by the earth atmosphere, leaving us just the blue end of lights spectrum to see". The former is an adequate answer to shut up a 5-year-old but grown-ups require truthful if more complex answers. To ask "Where did everything come from" is easy to ask but far from easy to answer. If you require simple answers to complex questions then all you will get is lies. Be that from the pulpit or the political hustings. There are smarter people than me who can explain the big bang theory. Yes, it is a theory and not a fact but it is the best idea we have at this time to answer your question. The real differences between it and creationism are that it is formed from observable data, it can be altered or changed when better ideas or new data comes along and no one is going to be burnt at the stake for disagreeing with it.

It does have a few guaranteed crossbench MPs in the lords (our senate). They do sometimes argue for things like a reduction of the term when legal abortions can be carried out. This is in response to improving medical technology. More often they will call out the govt on things like reducing welfare payments. Religious education is compulsory in UK schools but from what I hear its a broad spectrum of different religions. Not one defining one now.

I don`t quite agree with the post. Your argument goes roughly like this. Just because religion has the potential for great harm like alcohol or the internet doesn't mean that it is inherently bad. The big difference is that booze or the net do not seek to impose on others. Sure drunken revelry may wake us up on the weekend but nobody would suggest that we close down TV and shops in order that people can visit bars instead. As was the law in the UK when I was young, regarding churches on Sundays. What makes religion inherently bad is the notion of absolute certainty and moral superiority. You may believe that Bud light is the best drink in the world? Sometimes this can be for the good, other times not so. What makes the difference is no matter how strongly the secular person may believe in any given subject and seek to impose their will. They cannot claim a divine right.

It depends on your standards definition. If you are talking physical standards then that is not only allowable and commendable but inevitable as we age and have less pulling power. What you are talking about however is falling for the bad guys. That is a pattern that lots of us fall into, especially if they are hot. Without the "My lover done done me wrong" songs there would be hardly any music as we know it. I have been there and got the retro t-shirt. In the end, I had to kill her. Not in real life but in a story which I emailed to her. She phoned me last week ostensibly to inquire how I was. I forced myself to be cold and offhand. I live in south Liverpool. I don't think that I would like to live anywhere else. But let me tell you why I moved here 1st. It was about 25 years ago, not long after my divorce. I met a guy in a bar and stuck up a friendship. We went back to his and I lent him some money. The next weekend I tried to find his flat. I knew the number, not the building so I looked around for something familiar. As I wandered through the park I saw a young woman on her own under a tree reading a book. Several things struck me; a. on her own, b, reading a book, c, it did not have a flower on the cover. I said to myself "I want to live here". I have not been disappointed. It is multi-cultural, bohemian and left wing. Sure it has problems with crime like most cities but it has scoucers too and we won't ever let you walk alone. The new testament was spun for a Roman audience. The Easter story is a prime example. It takes place at Passover. This is a highly politically charged time for the Jews. Many years ago I celebrated this festival and as you may know, it tells the Exodus story. For jews, it is rather like the 4th of July. Culminating in a prayer that says "Next year in Jerusalem". Even Jews who live there say this prayer. So imagine if you will, an occupied land at a time of great nationalist fervor. Add to that a legend of a messiah. One who will free Jews and give them back their homeland. Great steps were also taken to make sure that JC ticked all the right boxes. An ass was provided for his entrance etc. Small wonder that Romans wanted him gone and so they crucified him, as was their way. Not such a problem in the UK. The first thing I see because it's at the top of the page in POF is smoking. Then I skip down to filters. There is no point if they only accept msgs from under 61s. As for religious? the UK does not have the same climate of god squad mafia. Organized religion is small and on the wain. Churchgoers will date amongst themselves anyway Those that say they believe but don't go to church can be okay to date too, as mostly they keep their beliefs to themselves. I must say that I did have a fantastic two-night sexual liaison with a Nigerian lady, who believed in god quite strongly. Times spent not exploring each other's bodies and delights, was spent discussing theology.

Lots of reasons. Apart from to keep warm or stave off sunburn. Sexual modesty, which is not just confined to the religious. Also, clothes say a lot about the person. They are a form of expression, a canvas upon which we paint how we would like the world to view us. My only bugbear about modern clothes is how bland men's fashion is nowadays. So grey and dull, I came of age in the 1970s when men's attire dared to be colourful and outrageous.

Meg has been a flat cat most of her life. It was only 6 years ago when I moved to a ground floor apartment that she had the chance to explore the outside world. At first, I was very worried about cars etc. but I could not leave the windows shut in summer. As it happens she is quite timid and only roams as far as my driveway. You can respect their rights and/or their person. As to beliefs? It is a question of tolerance. For example; you may not touch on the subject with a work colleague or family member, perhaps remove your hat (if you're a man) when visiting an old church on holiday. To my mind, I only counter-attack. If they don't push it? Then I won't. If they do? then they deserve all they get.
