@LovinLarge I can only say that the guy that blocks or walks away losses. A couple of years ago I had a FB battle with a guy called "the country pastor". He posted a load of bs purporting to prove that the bible was historically accurate. I called him out on what was a provable falsehood that he said was true and he knew it was bs. Then after a lot of toing and froing he blocked me. I nearly opened up another FB account under a new email address just to call him out again as a hypocrite but that was more effort than he deserved. See if you never engage with conservatives or religious knobheads then they will continue to walk around saying that we can`t refute them. If on the other hand you call them out and they skulk off to their corner, then at least any wavering onlookers can see who is willing to stand their corner.

The thing about Betfair is many people play the market. So, for example, Biden was 14/1 last year. @azzow2 Yeah I get what you're saying about resources but here's the thing. We have only been at this green energy for about 20-30 years. (okay maybe more but I am talking full-on development). Imagine if we had had the money and time that we have spent on the internal combustion engine, fossil fueled-fired power plants? How much more efficient would they be now? I know that the world economy is fucked atm and all govts will be making expedient short-term decisions. But green energy is not an option, it is the only real long-term choice. Resources are finite, global warming is not a debate, it is a fact. Whilst it may cost more in start-up costs, the long term benefits outway that. As we develop, someone will come up with the equivalent of a model-T wind turbine which will lead to a VW beetle version which will lead to Prius etc.

@Robecology Okay odds are what you bet and what you stand to win. So 10/20 is exactly that. Bet $10 win $20 plus your stake. Atm, that's Trump's odds, conversely $20 on Biden win you £10 plus stake, that's an average of all bookmakers. But each bookmaker will be different and add their rake to the overall amount. So if it is 2/1 on one side then it would be about 10/21 on the other. Betfair is a more complicated but fairer system. Punters bet against each other rather than take a bookmaker's odds. The odds are determined by the weight of money on each outcome happening or not. So what those numbers mean is that for $38.6 bet on Trump you win 61.9 + stake or vice versa. It is pure percentages minus the 0.5% which is Betfair's charge for the service. I hope that clears things up

Don`t get me wrong, I am not a dyed in the wool socialist. I believe that there is a place for laissez-faire, let the chips fall where they will govt but in this case. What is needed here is a coordinated, united response similar to FDRs new deal or war-time coalition. What is most destructive is a divisive, partisan, self-seeking administration that is only interested in short term gains.

@GROG How can a man who is warm understand a man who is cold? Once upon a time (1968 to be exact) there lived a land called Czechoslovakia. It lived under the rule of another state called the USSR. They both had the same belief system although the Czechs were not quite as strict. They both taught that all capitalism is corrupt and morally bankrupt. One of their examples was how the youth of the west was addicted to a powerful narcotic called Coca-Cola. This did not happen overnight. It took many, many years of indoctrination to instil this belief. It had to be repeated over and over again. Almost from birth, right through schooling and adulthood. (sound familiar) Then one day an enlightened leader of Czechoslavakia allowed some people to travel to the west. One young 21-year old student did just that. He got off the plane, went to a cafe and guess what he did? In sheepish and whispered tones he asked: "C-can I have a... Coca-Cola please?" The waitress brought him his drink which he drank with high expectations of this "narcotic". As absolutely nothing happened and when the same thing didn't happen again he realised he had been conned all his life. He saw through all the lies and make-believe. How everything was dependent on faith/trust in a state that had patently lied to him. Now I know that your friend does not drink Coke (caffeine) but I bet he has tried it at least once. A bit bad for your teeth/weight but not the kind of drug that drives you to rob your grandma for your next "hit". For you it is just a can of soda, for him, it is the road to hell. That is how fragile his house of cards is. It can be demolished by a fizzy drink and he is shit scared that one little slip will destroy all of his belief systems. Which include all of the talking snakes/donkeys, floods, Red-Sea parting, virgin birth, plus Brigham Youngs "revelations" and the words set in gold that conveniently got destroyed. The polygamy and racism towards blacks and native Americans that are now not part of Mormonism. Funny how what was true then is not now but the book remains the same? So what else is not really true? How can he be sure that the rules will not change later?

@demifeministgal The zip code lottery is as good as a counter as any. Say you had a sweepstake at work on the US golf open? Everyone draws a ticket that has a competitors name. Now, what would be the chances of you picking out the winner? Well, it would be the number of tickets/1. Now say you decided to make an informed choice on that event and studied the form? You could dismiss the amateurs, any players that did not do well on links courses, had injuries, could not handle bad weather, tended to choke on the home stretch etc. Then looked at those who are on form, rising stars, or who are used to winning majors. It would not guarantee that you would pick the winner but it would increase your chances. So what are the odds that of all the worlds belief systems, you just happen to be lucky enough to be born into the right one? By insisting that you follow the family path of religion. They are not advocating truth but tribal loyalty. Other arguments such as Christian moral code are equally spurious. The US is THE most Christian of all western nations but has the highest crime rate and more people in jail than any other. The same book that they advocate as a role model has been used to justify countless atrocities. And yes you CAN blame the book for past/present evil. Just as you could blame a make of sat-nav that sends people over cliffs or into lakes. It is no excuse to say "They did not interpret it correctly". It is supposed to be the word of God and he should have been powerful enough to answer prayer by saying "No, your other left". I could go on but you must be as familiar with all the anti-theist views as I am. All you need to do is keep on repeating them until mom says "Dinner" or your brother says "What about that game last night?"

@azzow2 Black Mirror is one of the best things on Netflix. The creator Chalie Brooker is a writer and very acerbic critic. So when he came out with his own TV work, it had to be good. The early ones had a zombie apocalypse centred around the Big Brother house. (No need to make new sets or cameras, They are already set up and lying idle). A terrorist, hostage situation, where the British PM is forced to have sex with a pig live on TV. Some of his fantasies are becoming realities. Like a world where your social status is defined by your "likes" on social media. This is already happening in China and here with Uber drivers etc. Most of them are quite dark but there are some lighter ones, like the one with Miley Cyrus or a virtual dating world where you are guaranteed to find your 99.9% match.

273kelvin replies on Sep 17, 2020:
This does cover most of the salient points but there are some loose ends. Firstly he correctly includes a myriad of belief systems that Pascal does not but fails to point out the sweepstake ticket nature for most peoples reason for their particular belief. It would safe to say that 99% of believers stay with what they were born into. Pascal chooses Catholic for the same reason. So the odds lengthen that you just happen to be born into the correct belief system. You could have just as easily have been born a Muslim, Hindu or into a mafia family If you do go with any particular system then you would have better odds leaving the one you were born into and choosing another. Like the game show box choice. * An informed choice of another system increases the chances but also increases the price. As it means moving out of your social norms, family/tribal structure etc. Btw if I had to choose I would go with Odin. Jesus was sent to save us from sin but Odin's job was ice giants. I see plenty of sin but no ice giants. Secondly, he does not address fully the modern option that was not popular in Pascals time. This is where you say "I believe in God but I don't follow any particular religion".Do you reject all formal knowledge of the subject? Like a chess player how hopes to play his best but will never read a book on it or do you cherry-pick parts of all different systems to suit yourself? If the latter, then what parts and of which systems? As most systems are exclusive then it would have to be one which was not like Buddhism or Unitarianism but they don't do God at all. This way says that you believe in an entity for which there is no proof because you were told it does by someone you no longer believe. Plus once again your choice is heavily weighted by your sweepstake birth belief. * You pick one of three boxes, one of which has the prize. The host then removes one box which does not have the prize. He then asks you if you want to swap boxes for the only other box. The maths say that you should always swap because the odds of your box being right is 1/3 but the odds of the other box is 1/2

@CourtJester You don't get it do you? It's like if you come home and find your wife screwing the mailman. It no excuse or comfort if she says that your ex cheated too. Every criticism levelled at Trump is deflected by either downright lies, blaming someone else or saying that Obama screwed up too/worse. It is not good enough, not for the supposed leader of the free world. The buck stops with him period. Then there is the divisive politics that he thrives on. Well, hows that working out for yer? Cities in engulfed in a violent confrontation, anti-mask and lockdown protests which he has done worse than nothing to quell. In fact, he has downright encouraged them. A real POTUS would be trying to pour oil on troubled waters. He just fans the flames. He could/should have used his popularity with his base to appeal to them to do right. Something like "Hey guys I know its tough not being able to get a haircut but we have to see this thing through". Instead, he shouts "Go team" when they stormed state capital buildings. A real POTUS serves (yes serves) as president of ALL the citizens of his country, yes ALL. He is Pelosi's president, Harrises president, Baltimore's president, the never Trumpers president, not just the ones that voted for him but ALL the citizens, even his critics I watch the news of his rallies and there are no masks or distancing. If fact he should not even be having them at this time but he does not care. He never cares for anyone except himself. You have an R rate of around 1.3. That means that this disease is accelerating at 1/3 more cases every day but does not give a shit so long as his TV ratings are good. Then again what can you expect from a man who gets the news that his own brother is dying in hospital then plays golf the next day as he dies? I don't care what kind of estrangement there was between them but you would a least show up and you certainly would not be playing golf. So if that's how much he cares about his own family, then how much do you think he cares about the shmucks that attend his rallies? About as much as he believes in the religious crap that comes out of the evangelical idiots that support him. The rest of the world is looking at you like a train wreck that can't be stopped. Do not for one second believe him when he says that America is now respected or that "They love me in Scotland or the UK" We f*cking hate him. They had to have massive police cordons to keep demonstrates away when he came here. He had to come home early from the NATO summit because all the other leaders were laughing at him behind his back. Which I fixed beautifully" "It had no oil in the sump" "It had loads of oil in the sump, That sump never had so much oil" "Then why did it seize?" "The previous guy" "That guy put oil in it at least" "No, he didn't. I put oil in it. Lots of oil, good oil, great oil, the best oil it ever had" "No, you didn't" "That's not true" "Yes it is" "No" "Here is the AAA report that shows that there was no oil in it, And you charged me $75 bucks for oil when you serviced it 2 days ago. Which may I add I could have bought at WallMart for $40" "Listen, what we have to concentrate on here is the fact that the washers and windows work perfectly. Which is far better than they did under your last mechanic, plus the chrome looks fantastic" "What are you gonna do about my car?" "I don't have time for this now. Nixon did it with Ford. VP Agnew resigned under a cloud a week or 2 earlier and Ford pardoned them both I think, certainly Nixon. Constitutionally it is feasible whether Trump will go of his own accord is doubtful considering is "perfect and tremendous" leadership. If it does happen then it will be after the election, He is too delusional to think he will lose. It may take a respective impeachment if that is possible which I doubt or a constitutional amendment which would require a 2/3s majority in the Senate to stop it. The election is constitutionally unstoppable and the result has to stand. Even the civil war could not stop that. So if Biden gets the electoral college votes then he is POTUS in January barring any coups.

I think you are wrong in the assumption that the pandemic will create more converts. In fact, I think it may well accelerate the move towards secularism. This comes down to the alt-right Christian fundamentalists. Ordinary Americans will look at them refusing to wear masks, insisting on large non-social distancing church gatherings and generally being a pain in the ass when it comes to getting rid of this. Plus there is their full-on support of 45 which will not go down well when he is out of office and ALL the dirty dealings come out. I do appreciate that not all Christians are evangelicals but they do makeup 26% of the US and are by far the most vocal. So it will be they who are judged when people look back on this not the science-based secularists
Well, I am back home after working away in Manchester.

That's a great report Kelvin. I've passed it through to "Tales from the Lockdown Group". Thanks. Good luck with the moonshine. Is it legal now? 45 years ago you were limited to wine.

@FrayedBear I am talking major amounts of smuggled tobacco. Nearly every small Asian shop has pouches under the counter. My moonshine is not even in the excise mans radar.

@FrayedBear I may barter it.
There's a user I've been trying to block and still see her posts. Is there anything I can do?

If you are a moderator in the group where you see the posts, you will always see everyone’s posts there.
273kelvin replies on Aug 23, 2020:
@Theresa_N Ah yes, we decided that the community senate was the only group you cannot block someone from. This was to give everyone a chance to be heard and have an open discussion. Obviously abusive, out-of-order comments or posts will carry admin penalties but if it is only one group we can all put up with the blocked person.

@Besalbub I doubt if there is anyone who does not talk to their dead parent in their head. I know I do even now and its been over 30 years
Just when you think you've heard it all, you learn that masks are a pagan practice.

Well, the alt-right Christian nutcases have finally shot themselves in the foot. They hitched their political wagon to an incompetent, philandering indefensible conman and now cry foul over basic common sense. There is nowhere in the bible that says that a face mask is wrong. Homosexuality or blood ...

@Gwendolyn2018 I think that a lot of good Christian people are gonna think the same way.

It is not off the subject at all. Logic and flawed logic are comparable in all cases.

I was lucky that I did get to talk to dad as an adult or maybe I made my own luck. We cannot go back, only forward. The best you can do is make time for your kids/grandkids and talk to them as you would have wanted to talk to your elders.
I post this here because there are so many old references to a world now gone.

I've never been able to get anything for a quid. Not sure what it is except English money.
