273kelvin comments on Jul 2, 2018:
I have a good friend who has come out of an abusive relationship. What bugs me is that she just gives a nervous laugh when talking about some of the terrible things he did. My thoughts were about all the decent people who have been put off joining the force because they would not arrest someone for pot. I once asked a question to my friends "Would you like to like next door to a policeman?" The unanimous answer was a resounding "No". I then asked "What if you lived in Amsterdam?" They had to think hard about that one.

Bad dates, let's hear them!
273kelvin comments on Jun 30, 2018:
I have already posted about my date with a witch (I can repost it if asked). This one seemed a good prospect. We were introduced and I had taken her on one "date" kind of (to a gig) even though she had said she was not dating. Things were going alright-ish. She was very talkative, assertive, gabby but I put this down to early enthusiasm. Not that I dislike assertive women, I think that there should be more of them. Second "date" so to speak and its my friends open mic night. This is once a month and everyone comes back to mine afterward where we play music and chill till the early hours. K (I wont use her full name) grew louder and more aggressive as the evening went on. By the end no one was permitted to speak, play a tune or even have a conversation with a 3rd party. Ks voice was the only one that was allowed. To the extent of telling my friends to "shut up you morons Im speaking". The friends in question were two of the most mildest, good natured guys you could ever wish to meet but even they lost their rag and told her to "please chill out ffs". In the end everyone else (inc. me) had had enough and I had to bum rush her out. After that she kept texting me about how it was "all mine and everyone elses fault". Dont get me wrong, I have been an arsehole on more than one occasion but I have always said "mea culpa" and stuck my hand up. It was the denial that said to me this was a bullet dodged

273kelvin comments on Jun 28, 2018:
Slightly playing devils advocate here but I beg to differ on " Considering all the damage monotheism has done to civilization over the centuries." Much of the reform in our societies have come from the christian church. They were prime movers in the abolitionist movement (amazing grace). In my country at least Sunday schools were at one time the only source of education for the working classes. Darwin of course came from an Anglican background and even considered the clergy as a profession. It is only as late as the 1970s when the christian lobby (in the USA) began to take over the alt right. Think back to the civil rights movement and Dr Martin Luther king or Americas favorite Muslim Mohamed Ali. In my own life (admittedly in the UK where the climate of debate is less heated) it was Methodists that ran the local youth club. Yes we had to attend prays but we mostly just put up with this for the sake of somewhere to meet. I did not see many secularists getting of their arses to run one. Recently I have been working in a church. One of their main endeavors is running a food bank, where families left impoverished by our conservative, austerity driven govt. have been forced to seek help. Bible thumping TV evangelists give christians a bad rep. but I am sure that many of us know one or two good ones who care about people more than dogma and more importantly do something about it. I disagree with theistist thinking but i do have to say that often their actions are better than ours.

273kelvin comments on Jun 27, 2018:
How is this for a compromise position : Many years ago a young fresh faced, newly elected, labor MP came angrily striding into a house of commons bar. "Whats the matter?" said an old labor warhorse MP. whos lungs were gone from working in the coal mines and smoking untipped cigarettes whist negotiating for his fellow miners. "Theyre a lot of c#nts in there" said young MP almost in tears and pointing the direction of the chambers. The old MP supped on his pint and said "yer damn right lad. There ARE a lot of c#nts in there but theres a lot of c#nts out there too (pointing at the window) and they deserve to be represented a well" My point being, there are people who voted for Obama who voted for Trump, otherwise he would not have been elected. These are the people you will have to win over if you want him out next time. You will not get very far by calling them names. Remember how well that worked for Hillary? Whilst we on that, I see no clamber calling for her to run again. From this side of the pond the election ran Trump..."I will make America great again" Hillary.... "Its my turn." If you insist on telling people how they should think and how they should vote without listening to their concerns. You run a grave danger of being second again.
I've been thinking more about the angry and dehumanizing tone that a tiny minority of our members ...

I agree to a point. As a non US citizen I should be more respectful. However I have for the most part only reported just how much he is viewed with ridicule and contempt elsewhere in the world. For me the line was crossed when he retweeted a racist English defense leagues (a far right UK party) fake news video and then waited a month to put his hand up to say oops. What he says in and about the US is one thing. When he starts on mine thats another. That having been said, civility and good manors cost nothing yet their value is immense. Resorting to insults and name calling can only weaken any case
Why can't a man have a friendship with a women like he does with another man?
273kelvin comments on Jun 27, 2018:
I had occasion to count up my personal friends yesterday and of the 6 that knock on my door regularly, 4 were women. One is an ex and the rest are platonic. Not saying that I would not if they asked (ex excluded) but no means no and till they change their minds thats how it will stay. This is not an ulterior motive just that if I find a woman attractive, I will tell her so. Its up to her where she takes that. The most important thing in this is, I enjoy the company of women period. I like to talk and listen to them. They speak so differently than us guys. It is almost like another language. Mens conversation is so easy. Its upfront, out in plain sight, sport, politics etc. Women are much more subtle and personal. It adds another dimension to any subject, which I personally find fascinating. Bottom line is, if you want women friends, you have to like them for who they are.

Why am I the bad guy?
273kelvin comments on Jun 25, 2018:
My ex-wife had 3 sisters and they unsurprisingly would fall out from time to time. Sister A would fall out with B. Sister C would talk to B = Sister A would then fall out with C as a consequence. Then sister A would make up with B but still not talk to C because of her "betrayal" by talking to B when the feud was on. As for your case, its not unusual for a new wife to try and isolate the ex and insulate the guy from all contact.

273kelvin comments on Jun 25, 2018:
The reverse seems the case in the UK. Although we have a state embedded religion it is frowned upon to parade your personal beliefs. Like when Blair wanted to finish an Iraq war address with "God bless", he was told "We dont do god." I really dont see a problem with whatever impediments legal or otherwise you place in front of candidates. They will simply do what they all do when faced with a moral dilemma.......lie.

At some point you are going to have to be honest with him. Maybe by asking if he really thinks all atheists are stupid, inc. professors? A long time ago my brother was giving his kids extra pocket money not to smoke. He smoked himself and I knew they smoked behind his back. I pointed out that he was just giving them reasons to lie and if he really wanted them not to smoke. He would stop smoking as an example. This he found too hard to do but he did stop being a hypocrite and let them smoke in front of him. In the end none of them smoke now but they do have a great relationship with him. Sit down with your dad and ask him how much he values honesty, how much he loves you and how much he trusts you to make your own decisions? The relief that your not coming out as gay might go a long way to heal the rift

About 7 years ago a lovely lady moved in next door to me and my (now ex) partner. She had a fantastic singing voice and would sing whilst hanging out washing. One night after we had all been playing poker she shouted us to come round. There was only her there and me and my two nephews ended up chatting to her. The eldest nephew crashed out, I was all set to go but it was obvious that she really liked my youngest nephew. He was all set to go back with me till I pointed out that I think she wants you upstairs. Anyway that was 7 years ago. Now Doug and Emma are married with two lovely children.

273kelvin comments on Jun 12, 2018:
We all have faith to a degree. When we step on an airplane we have faith that the mechanics have done their job properly. Some suggestions for answers to students and teachers "Why are you here?" -"Because state school sucks. It they were better I would leave skid marks." "Anyone who does not have a God has no morals." More difficult to get across but try these. Jesus told the story of the good Samaritan. There was a reason he chose someone like that. The Samaritans are a race of people (who still live in the area) that celibate the Passover but do not attend temple. This means that at some point in time in the past they left the religion. This would be (to the Jews) the closest thing to an atheist in their culture. Yet he chose to use a Samaritan why? Religion has written rules of morals. (Some more than others). These are interpreted by the clergy. The USA has a written constitution. This is interpreted by the judiciary. The UK has no written constitution. Does that mean we have no constitution? Of course not, we simply are more loose leafed and deal with things as they arise. Then ask why it was left to you to stop those idiots throwing peanuts? If his logic was true it would be the other way around. "You have to show respect for our beliefs!" Respect is a two way street. By not attending mass you are showing respect. Would they prefer to have a non-believer there if not openly laughing or snoring then inwardly doing so? As to all the "fuck offs" Use your best sarcastic smile and say "I an sooo glad you said that. I never understood the true meaning of Christian charity before and now Im saved, Hallelujah " A bit like this..... https://youtu.be/oYOZ3IzRaf4

Maajid Nawaz about the rape crisis in the UK, and the arrest of Tommy Robinson. [youtube.com]
273kelvin comments on Jun 7, 2018:
As a UK citizen can I put you straight on a few things. Firstly there is no rape crisis. Yes there have been grooming cases involving Asian men and young white girls but crisis? No. Were the police and social services walking on egg shells? yes. Is this a crisis? compared to what? Homelessness? The killing of black teenagers by US police? This situation is and will by addressed much more stringently from now on. Contrary to Fox news and Trump fake news re-tweets (he did admit it was fake after a month or so). The UK is not over run by Muslim gangs or racial tensions. For the most part we get along very well. "What do you say to a Muslim on xmas day? A pint of milk and a packet of skins please" Tommy Robinson is a racist thug. Trying to cause divisions and hatred where none really exist. When his scum of a party came to my city to march. We (and by that I mean people from all walks of life and backgrounds) kicked the shit out of them. could we do this? Because they were a small bunch of dick heads and we were the majority of decent people. Who will not tolerate Nazi crap on our streets. You will probably not believe this because you prefer your mind set and even though I fucking live here. Fox news is your bible. Then again you are responsible for school shooting because you won't allow prayers in school.

If its just "a snuggle" then watching tv or after sex is best but if its a euphemism. Then mornings are good for me but afternoons are great too.
