I was not going to bother but I did. First thing I was stuck by was how far my society has come. I remember a school friend telling me how his uncle had made page 5 in the UK`s biggest selling newspaper for simply marrying a black woman. It did make me feel proud to be British (in the right way) to see her being walked down the isle in front of the cream of UK establishment. Second thing was, now you folks can see why we are mostly secular. The contrast between our preachers and yours was striking They both read the same passage from song of songs and we made it sound as scintillating as a shopping list and this was our A-team.

Difficult to defend but I love a challenge. £40m is a lot of money. You can get a premier league footballer for that. Then it`s not that much when you look at things like US elections. Not enough to buy you a mayor or a senator. Of course this is not public money. These are corporate donations by well meaning companies that just want the right person in charge. No expectations of pork barrel bills or govt contracts, so you`re not footing the bill are you? Just billions of dollars to put a draft dodger in the west wing. Who can make tax changes for rich people. How much does it cost for the upkeep of things like the washington monument? I heard it was $9m per annum. What happens to that money? Well it`s spent on staff and contactors who then epend their money around. Well what happens to the royal weding money? Exactly the same. most of it will be secuity and staff, just moves the money around. You have your heritige we have ours. This event has the whole world looking at us for what you could get a local DA elected.

I love being on this site. It's cheaper than therapy, more effective and, I can do it naked.

I doubt I will watch it. I am a monarchist rather than a royalist. That means I believe our constitutional monarchy. It has formed a stable govt for centuries with very little crisis. Unlike many republics. i know its anachronism, having a hereditary head of state but the stability that comes with it is worth a little hypocrisy. Though I don`t follow the royals or swoon over their antics. What does piss me off is the left banging on about how much this and that costs and why can`t we do something else with the money. The royal family has it`s own money to pay for this wedding and yes its true the get a wage from the govt. The tourism is just a small part of what they give back. The soft power is immeasurable. The very fact that we are discussing this on what is (for the most part) a USA site is gives testimony to that. You cannot buy advertising like this.

Like you I used to lie and cheat. Then it dawned on me that it was just so much easier to be straight. It`s like when you have made a mistake constructing something. You can try and bodge it or you can take it apart and do it right. You will find that most times it`s easier and quicker to do the latter.If you don`t lie you don`t have to remember what you said. If you don`t cheat then you get the thrill of winning all to yourself. Having said this I also made a vow not to do anything illegal or immoral for less than £5 ;-)

I held a chess night. These things were always stag (women have got better things to do with their time). But Lee brings this lady. They weren`t dating she just needed somewhere to be. So there was an odd number of us playing chess so it meant that one guy would sit out whilst the others played.That gave Julie someone to talk to on rotation. She was in hiding from her guy. She had asked him to get out but he was abusive. The best thing she could think of was to disappear. At that point it was 2 weeks MOI or AWOl. So the chess night ended but she stayed and talked. Boy did she talk. I said I`m going to bed and she could have the sofa or join me. She choose the sofa but came to bed claiming that my clock was too loud to sleep over. She talked some more... I think it must have been over 18 hours of her talking, I swear she was talking in her sleep. We woke and she talked some more. It was afternoon by the time she ran out of breath and we made love. That over 20 years ago. We were together for 15 of them and she is still my best friend.

Like the UK? We still (just) can afford universal health care. Water has been privatized for many years. The thing about heath care is, the US system is so counter-productive. I watch a series like breaking bad and I see a very intelligent creative guy. Working in a dead-end job just to maintain his and his families health. In the UK that guy would have been free to pursue another job (other than drug dealing) that would have enriched society or even started out on his own business.

"The frightened fish", always saying "look out for the hook" a guy who was always late, so much so he had his own key the dock gates was "called early one morning." You get the idea. I like the use of yin/yang to describe this. It is not sexist to say that particular personality traits maybe ascribed to gender or even that mater race, culture or even nationality. We are a product of our culture. Self reliance is a virtue that men from my culture aspire to. Like many virtues it can be detrimental when taken to extremes but without it you become a pain in the arse. For example my ex runs a foreign student home. She finds Saudi guys to be so inept at any practical tasks that some cannot even make a cup of tea for themselves So obviously this is not genetic. It may also be changing. A recent survey in the UK said that 60% of households that own a hammer, have never used it. 40% of guys under 30 have never used a screwdriver. I would be interested to know what % of people on here call AAA etc. if they have a flat tyre?

Although we "subjects of the crown" in the UK we can. Collect rain water, fish (sea fishing is fine but you need the permission of the person who owns the fishing rights elsewhere), start a business, renovate your home (up to extensions or loft conversions), hunt (again with the land owners permission but you cannot use dogs unless they are gun dogs). cut hair, sell a product, grow food on your property and we are one of the few countries where you can sail a boat without a licence. Oh and PS you do not need the govt permission to ride a bike or horse still just like 125 years ago.

Good manors and politeness are the oil that lubricates society. You can never tell where it will turn up. I still recall a red letter day for me when I signed off welfare and started my own business. On the way I got some petrol. After paying, on my way out. I held the door open for a middle aged, middle class lady. No response, so I waited till she got to the till before saying in a loud voice "YOUR WELCOME." Not 10 minutes later and the same scene at the dole. This time it was an uncouth looking youth. The thank you`s that he gave me was heartwarming and sincere. Goes to show you.

There is a bug on here that is borderline racist. I wrote that joke with" Black garter. " It omitted it. Then I edited it, it disappeared. Then I deleted the whole thing and wrote it out again with " Black " most assuredly in. Now it has gone again so watch if my edit gets kkk`ed.

From what I have gleaned on here, don`t be too quick to mention this to other people. It`s ok here in the UK but in the US you will get all kind of judgemental (with the emphasis on the mental) theisists trying to get you back into the fold. I am not saying lie or try and hide it just don`t bring it up unless asked.

I think I have read all of Clavells books. "King Rat" made a great movie. His novels have a running dynasty "Ty Pan" and "Shogun" are excellent. An interesting short story he wrote is "the Children's story" Centering on the indoctrination of education.

Everyone (left of center) thinks of Trump as a DH but I am reminded of Mohamed Ali or Clay as he was back then. before his fight with Sonny Liston. The champ was known for his cold stare, a hard man. Ali came at him like a mad man at the weigh in. So much so that his team were worried because his pulse was 180. Asked why he did this Ali said "you don`t know what a mad guy will do." Years of measured responses and sanctions have done nothing to change the situation. Maybe the nutter approach has worked?
