Nerdy Dating? Online and Offline
273kelvin comments on Feb 15, 2018:
Your obviously an intelligent chap, ask yourself " Where do nerdy women hang out? " Book clubs spring to mind (if there is not one in your area start one). Are there any visiting lectures coming to town? Amature dramatics are a good source or yoga. Being skilled in IT can be a great introduction. Local historical or conservation groups too.

Is this why the Bible, Torah and Quran ban Bacon?
273kelvin comments on Feb 15, 2018:
The torah does not specifically ban the eating of pigs as such. Just says that animals should have cloven hooves and chew the cud. It is possible to breed a Kosher pig (a la that great film " Leon the pig farmer " ) but I doubt it would make it to any rabbis dinner table. Many have made the point about pork in hot climates as a reason for the ban. I would also look at a pigs diet. Like us they are omnivorous and are quite sentient animals. Most of us would baulk at the thought of eating dog. As Churchill said " Cats look down on us, dogs look up to us. only pigs treat us as equals ".
A new deadly challenge.

Does anyone else do culture immersion when you travel?
273kelvin comments on Feb 14, 2018:
I do like to immerse myself when I can. The language barrier is hard to overcome but I am reminded of a time in Malta. I found myself in a small greasy spoon type of cafe (not for tourists) and asked for an " iced coffee ". The lady thought I had said a " nice coffee " and proceeded to put a spoonful of nescafe into a half pint glass, half filled it with hot water then topped it up with evaporated milk. If this was not enough she then added 3 spoonfuls of sugar. Being English I did not complain but sat quietly in the corner. As people came in they saw my beverage and assumed that I too was Maltese and talked freely. It is amazing how you can get by with the odd grunt or nod. Maltese being a bastard language comprised Arabic, Italian and English it was not too difficult to glean the conversation. I spent a whole morning just listening and nodding, I even ordered a second coffee !
Do you find it attractive dating someone who smokes cigarettes?
273kelvin comments on Feb 14, 2018:
I have smoked most of my life. It kind of defines you more than anything really. I worked it out once that I had 3 times as many gay friends as non-smokers. I started off with cigarettes but now I smoke a pipe, which smells even worse but traps more tar so is better for me. My daughter asked me at 13 if I could just smoke cigarettes when I came to see her. She did not mind the smell as much as my pipe. I did think about it but rejected the idea because I wanted her to be repulsed by the habit. I only date smokers as we are breed apart.

Dear Sarah I could give you a lot of guff about looks not being important but we both know that it is. However it is NOT the most important thing just one of them. There are loads of hot guys out there with total bitches that ruin their lives and vice versa. I know FOR A FACT that there are millions of chaps out there that would simply adore you. These guys are shy, unassuming maybe not great lookers, live with their parents or alone and have hobbies to occupy their time. Maybe it is time to even up the odds? ex. I have a good friend who suffered from poor self image all her life. She is a big girl from E Germany and has had a string of losers as bf`s. A few years ago she got a motorbike, went on rallies etc and mixed with the bikers (we are not talking hells angels here, just bikers). Now she has set up home with good guy and is happy. Do you play chess? I only ask as chess players are 99.9% guys! You do the maths

A strange case here but basically this. A professional game, a Doncaster player is injured, Bury kick the ball out to allow treatment. A Doncaster player tries to pass the ball back to the Burys goalie from the throw in and inadvertently scores. In order that Burys act of sportsmanship not be punished. Doncaster let Bury walk the ball into the goal. . https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/doncaster-rovers-1-bury-1-9822537

A question of my British friends.
273kelvin comments on Feb 12, 2018:
It is not all doting, many of my friends on the left are republicans (I bet that phrase sounds odd to you). I like to shut them up with 2 words " president Thatcher " figure so reviled by the left that the very thought of her clinging to power any longer than she did sends shudders. Personally I go for a more pragmatic approach as do most. If it ain`t broke? A lot is made of her tourist value but she does have other advantages too. As head of state for all this time I cannot think of any other public figure worldwide that has been that scandal free (family does not count). As an a-political head of state she is rather like a chairperson that holds no power unless a constitutional crisis forces her to make a decision. (Incidentally the monarchy has, when pushed always gone in favor of reform). Although she wields no power, we do not know what goes on in her private meetings. She consults with the PM once a month, all state visits require an audience. Consequently she has met everyone from Churchill, JFK, Mandela, Thatcher (rumor has it she despised her), Nixon, De Gaul, Gorbachev you name it from the great and good to the lowly bridge operator. Imagine if Trump had to talk once a month with someone who had that kind of experience? These are all very practical reasons. Mostly she exudes a sense of duty. A word not fashionable nowadays but duty is what drives her. Her father died an early death because of it. She remains a constant in an ever changing world. For all the faults of a feudal system, they pale into insignificance when we look at republics such as France, Germany or Italy. All of which have had major constitutional crisis. The hitchhiker's guide has a part where they talk of the president of the galaxy. " Anyone who would actually want the job would be the least suitable for it. " Short of just appointing someone at random having a monarch is the next best thing. Incidentally I worked with a Bulgarian a few years back. When the wall came down their hereditary king volunteered to stand as president. On the condition that he would only serve 1 term and renounce any claim the to throne. So I asked the guy what it was like? He said " Well he was ok at 1st but after a while he ended up in Spain. PLayboying with Juan Carlos but compared to all the corrupt bastards we have had since. He was not that bad ".

273kelvin comments on Feb 11, 2018:
My dad died several decades ago but I always remember when he told me why he did not believe in god. He was a very practical type of guy. An NCO in the royal navy. Hence the fact that I was born in Malta, where this story takes place. On day he and few of his shipmates were walking along the quayside in Valletta, when a local fishing boat had just pulled in. One of the crew had fallen overboard between the boat and the harbor wall. The sea was quite choppy and the boat was banging against the harbor, threatening to crush the hapless fisherman. Immediately all the boats crew and any Maltese who saw the incident, dropped to their knees and began to cross themselves. My dad and his messmates ran to the boat, sat on the harbor wall and tried to fend off the boat with their outstretched legs. Meanwhile one of their number ran and got a rope to lower down to the guy. I can remember to this day what he told me " If religion means caring more about a mans soul than his life? Then I wanted none of it ". He never made a big deal about it, never protested when mum sent me off to sunday school, would attend church whenever a family event such as weddings etc. happened. I can see him now as he would go down on one knee and bow his head in military fashion. He did this out of respect for the occasion and family, not out of belief. (From what I understand, church services in the navy were not exactly compusarary but they would find some thing unpleasant for you to do in the meantime, if you refused to attend.) So for me, being an atheist is no great thing. I never had to come out, never lost anyone close because of my stance. I do feel for you folks stuck in the bible belt, I do.

Even medieval people were not that dumb. It was the author Washington Irving that started the myth that people used to think the earth was flat. 273kelvin comments on Feb 9, 2018:
I subscribe to Richard Dawkins view that religion is a mind virus. The closer and more prolonged your exposure, the greater your risk of infection. Some mind viruses are quite benign such as wearing a baseball cap backwards or hula hoops. Some more dangerous like nazism. Even medial science is not immune. In the UK about 24% of mental heath problems are diagnosed as cannabis related. In the Netherlands 0% Sure there people that switch or join another religion but often this because of close proximity to a new source, Graham Greene to catholicism in the 30`s at Cambridge, Mohamed Ali to black Islam in the 60`s, Cat Stevens etc. Cults are the exception as they seem most successful at targeting college kids. Their intelligence helps them reject their parents religion, whilst their youth makes them vulnerable.
I still miss a woman who rejected me more than fifty years ago because of her religion.

Please forgive me for being a little dumb here but i don`t get it. Coming of age in the 70`s when womens lib was in full swing we got " love me for my mind not just my body ". Women go on about not objectifying their bodies sexualy. Our bodies are pretty much what we are born with and although we can work out etc. short of cosmetic surgery. What you see is what you get. However we can choose which books we read, things we study and how we express ourselves. Surely a guy finding that sexy is a good thing? Finding someone who shares your views and challenges you intellectually is a goal that most people aspire to. To find someone that is turned on by this would IMHO be a plus or am I just thick? If someone to dealt out a pack of cards between 4 people and each person got dealt an entire suit. You probably think that someone was cheating and you would probably be correct. How many places have others been? You think about an old friend that you haven`t spoken to for ages. The phone rings and it`s them. How many times did you think about them and it didn`t? I watched psb doc on them and it dealt with Smith, his sexual wrongs, the racism. and polygamy but also what they did after Katrina. The N O police chief said " If there was a multi-national corporation who dealt with disasters. Then they would be the Mormons. They had trucks on their way to N O before the hurricane hit. They had a warehouse outside the city with tents, water, canned food blankets you name it and all of it itemised. ". Then there was an interview with one of the hurricane victims. He said " These guys showed up with orange jackets on. They helped out with food and water but then they also stayed and helped me clean up and fix things ". Just because they`re religious don`t dismiss them.
Euthanasia
273kelvin comments on Feb 7, 2018:
My first child Ian was seemingly normal when he was born. As he grew we noticed that he was slower than other kids in developing. Ian was late to talk, walk and never managed to be potty trained. We took him to hospital so many times, especially after he suffered with epileptic fits. Finally when Ian was 7 he was diagnosed with a rare genetic disease called homocystinuria. An inability of his body to process the amino-acid cystine. This led to so many symptoms, fits, spasticity, mental retardation, a dislocated eye lens and most strikingly, beautiful platinum curly blond hair (a la Shirley Temple). On face value Ian would certainly (had his condition been known at birth) be a candidate for euthanasia but then that would negate who Ian was. Everybody who met Ian was enthralled and inspired. His smile even in the face of the most adverse circumstances like when he lost the ability to walk. His pleasure at the most simple things that we take so much for granted like the colour yellow or a christmas tree, Ian`s smile beamed from ear to ear . Most of all his unconditional love was a lesson that the very most smartest of us can only dream of. When he passed away aged 25 the world became lesser.

All christian holidays have pre-christian roots. Much like a sporting event that is sponsored by a large corporation. They are centered around solstice or equinox dates. Christmas or yule tide occurs just after the winter solstice, Traditionally when you would slaughter livestock that you could not feed though the winter. A feast time. Easter A spring equinox festival originally from the fertility goddess Estre or Ostara (root word for estrogen) is celebrated with eggs or rabbits nuff said. I celebrate these holidays as a connection to less modern times.

I live in a socialist city. On the odd occasion when I dare to express a view that might differ from the party line I get shot down in flames. One time I said that Blair was a bad PM. (Two illegal wars and an economy in taters). The defence of Blair was such that reminded me of Liverpool football fans when their striker Luis Suarez bit an opposing player. " It was only a nip...He didn`t mean it " etc. Another issue that I get stick about is fracking. I know you guys in the US have had this for quite a while and also there have been problems. Now we (the UK) have discovered about 50 years of energy under our land. The environmentalists, left and homeowners are totally opposed to any use of fracking. My argument is that we want the lights to go on when we want to but are not too happy if we have to pay the environmental cost. The operative word there is " we " . We, are perfectly ok with energy from other sources like Russian gas or Colombian coal but not if means that we are affected.

Here is a true story. This guy drove a cab, not one of those black cabs you see whenever London is seen in a film but a normal car type. Gypsy cabs or the things that Uber uses now but not that new. Anyway he had this regular job to take an old lady to pick up her pension. After a while he did not bother to put it though the books just came at the same time every week and they became friends. When she died she left him her house. Not a big house just 2 up 2 down but a house never the less. Then he won the lottery, not millions but a few hundred thousand. Enough to stop working. So he moved to the suburbs where the golf courses are but he did not fit in. He would find himself down at the taxi office most nights talking to his old mates and swapping taxi stories. After a while he ran out of stories and they all had work to do. So he bought 2 Jaguar cars, drove one as a luxury cab and rented the other to a mate to do the same. Now the moral of this true story is this. That guy was lucky. Not because of the house or the lottery but because he is doing what he likes to do and knew it.
If you won the lottery,,,
273kelvin comments on Feb 4, 2018:
Wrong question. The real one is what are you doing 5 years after winning the lottery? After the cars, family, holidays, houses, friends and partying is over. When you have thought about it and come up with an answer. Ask yourself another one... can I do it anyway?

Apartheid?? Over 20% of Israel's population in Arab. The 3rd largest party in the Kinesit is Arab. The chief justice of Israels supreme court is Arab. Does not sound like apartheid to me.

Not even new to the USA. When England was the worlds top banana there was a myth that Jesus had come to Glastonbury (I think he played the pyramid stage lol). Blake wrote a poem about it which became a hymn. The only one that us recalcitrant boys would ever sing at school assembly. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/And_did_those_feet_in_ancient_time

It reminds me of the pious man who heard a radio warning of a flood. He thought " I am a pious man god will save me ". Then a cop car came round warning about the flood and telling him to evacuate but again he thought " I am a pious man god will save me ". The flood came and filled up his 1st floor and a rescue boat came for him but yet again he thought " I am a pious man god will save me ". Finally he is clinging to his chimney pot with water still rising and a helicopter come to rescue him but like an idiot he thinks " I am a pious man god will save me ". He drowns! When he gets to heaven he says to god " I am a pious man why didn`t save me? " " What " says god. " I sent a radio warning, a cop car, a boat and a fucking helicopter you dickhead ".
Excuses, excuses! This just irks me.

Forgive me if you have heard this before. A state trooper has stopped thousands of speeders and only ever let someone off if they gave the right reason. Only one guy ever did which is this. " I am sorry to be speeding officer but my wife left me last month for a policeman and when I saw you in my rear view mirror I thought he was trying to give her back ".
Best ever lover, did you have one?
273kelvin comments on Feb 3, 2018:
It would have to be my last love. At the age of 57 if found myself back in my 30`s. African and 45, she had one of those behinds you could rest your pint on. Plus she had been genitally enhanced. If she had been white she would have been a red head. Why does passion have two sides ahh.

During Love Making, Are you The You Vocal Or Silent Type?
273kelvin comments on Feb 3, 2018:
Just a tip for anyone who has loud lovemaking neighbors. Normally this ok in moderation but I have met quite a few where it becomes intolerable. So here is a possible solution; Go find your best live album. Fast forward past the music to the very end. Wait till the couple next door has just finished their loud cavort and turn the volume up to 11. The applause and shouts of " MORE MORE " will generally get the mesage though.

How Should Atheism Be Taught? - The Atlantic
273kelvin comments on Feb 1, 2018:
I am not sure it can be taught in the same way as theology or oriental philosophy can be taught. This is the problem with the very term atheist. A word describing a non-belief. Secularism should be at the core of most subjects such as moral philosophy or law anyway. Can one imagine a course on non-judeo-christian mathematics or non-sharia politics? The idea is absurd.
Friends with benefits OK?
273kelvin comments on Feb 1, 2018:
Been there done that and I have to say it`s a bit too clinical for my tastes. Not that I am looking for yet a another long term partner but some emotional entanglement is a must for me now. When I go swimming I want to get my hair wet. Give me a head over heals love affair any day. It may go arse over tit but I want that fall from grace.
Do you think that men have become more feminine recently?
273kelvin comments on Feb 1, 2018:
Metrosexuality or as I prefer to call " just gay enough " is not new in terms of grooming. This has been around for centuries. However being able to express feelings and getting in touch with our feminine side is the reverse bounty we get from feminism. Yes woman are taking more roles that have been tradisionaly mens but now we get to spend time with our children. When/where I grew up a man would never be seen pushing a buggy. I cannot even recall any guys playing ball with their sons. As to the types of guys women are attracted to? Women are complex and individualistic. However we can say that there are 2 archetypes that they are genetically programed to be attracted to. First is the James Stewart archetype. As personified in " It`s a wonderful life ". A kind loving family man who provides well for his family and never goes astray. Secondly there is the Errol Flynn archetype. Who to put it bluntly is a shagger. Wherever he lays his hat etc. Women will want to settle down with the former but be attracted to the latter. Ideally a woman will want children by both types. Therefore ensuring that whilst the Stewart guy looks after the offspring there will be a Flynn to carry on the line. All this aside there is no substitute in attractiveness amongst males for success. Women will definitely go for money and power. If I am wrong in this respect then I can only conclude that Jerry Hall must have discovered that Rupert Murdoch has a fantastic sense of humour.
Humour.. What are the worst things you could say or have said after sex?

Do your job, do it well and stay out of her way. She has an employee who will come in early to bring her food, not only that but comes in on her day off to try and sort out a personal problem. Most bosses would love an employee like that. If she cannot appreciate you then look for a better job or better boss. What you tried to do was a kind thing. Now she may have thought that you were trying to curry favor with her. If so just keep your distance. Same goes if she is playing mind games. Just keep doing your job well and maybe look for another one.

273kelvin comments on Jan 31, 2018:
Monopoly is good fun and we used to set up alternate rules like all properties had to go for auction when landed upon. Either by sealed bid or open. I used to play chess at a high level but it was too demanding. Cranium is a good compilation of games if your looking for family fun. I am a damn good backgammon player too. for those looking for a game may I recommend " Backgammon masters " a gambling site it but with a good play money side to it.
One of the most comical things about the believers in some omnipotent "god", is that they claim that...
273kelvin comments on Jan 31, 2018:
God did not rest on the seventh day. He took the earth, universe and all his creation to show to an even higher power. The higher power looked at gods works and said " You expect to get a Phd for this? "

A Zen priest was asked to write a blessing for a family he was friendly with. He wrote ; Grandfather dies, Father dies. Son dies. The family were rather puzzled by this seemingly gloomy blessing and asked him to explain. " Take a close look at the order of events " he said " there are no tragedies here. All is in order, Grandfather, father then son ".
Are all views and beliefs of cultures equally valid? And is relativism toward these beneficial?
273kelvin comments on Jan 30, 2018:
There are many forms of genital amendment practiced in Africa. One of my ex`s was a recipient of a very different type. I will not go into too much details but it involved the skin next to her clitous being lenthened. This was done as an enhancement rather than a castration. Now don`t get me wrong, I in no way condone this practice but I did enjoy the results.
