273kelvin replies on May 7, 2018:
Re your 1st reply; It is true that slavery existed before and after America and that Africans sold the slaves to the whites. However this must be put into contest. Slavery is in the bible but it is there as a punishment for theft or debt. Europeans took what was a cottage industry and made a global trade out of it. What horrifies us most about the holocaust., is not just the genocide (there has been genocide before and since, some even larger). It was the industrial efficiency of it. The same goes for the America`s. Some estimates put the figures at 20 million Africans were taken. Now most of them would not have been to the USA but lots were. My city was at the hub of this trade and although the UK banned it in 1830 (a generation before the land of the free), the money generated by this was around to fuel the industrial revolution that I still enjoy the benefits of. The USA has a class system based largely upon race. A UK interviewer asked Mohamed Ali what it was like being a 2nd class citizen? Ali replied "Oh what I would have given to be 2nd class. At the top you have white protestants, then white catholics, then jews then chinese, by the time you get down to black men your about 16th." It is vary easy to say "well do better at school and raise yourself up" but if the odds are stacked against you then it will only be a small percentage that will rise. The war on drugs is also a form of Jim Crow and has been likened to a "slow holocaust" https://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/may/25/the-wire-creator-us-drug-laws

The question is not "have" but "would." You have no real way of knowing (for the most part) what you may have stopped or enabled. This was a, give a confusing view when my opponent looked up from the board and b, to give no facial clues as to my stress levels. Both these were well thought out and conscious decisions on my part. Okay some may may be reactive or tramlines of thought but not all. Science for example is a series of qualitative decisions. Which theory to explore, what methodology, which data is significant, whether to publish? When or if you reply to this you will make all kinds of qualitative choices. Don`t tell me it is all reactive.

273kelvin replies on Apr 28, 2018:
@gater If you saw them out of sequence then maybe. Sequels often have higher production values. The money is in place after the 1st one has been a huge success. Alien worked well on a lower budget. Part of its charm was very ordinary people, working together battling an extraordinary situation. All be it on a space ship with a surprise robot.

273kelvin replies on Apr 27, 2018:
@Etre Just because something is the origin of something valid. Does not necessarily give the original validity. eg. Alchemy is the origin of chemistry that does not make it valid. It can throw historical light on some science. Most notably Newtons classification of 7 colours in the spectrum. Where in fact there only 6 (indigo and violet are 2 shades of purple) but he thought that 6 was the devils number hence 7. Similarly ancient greeks had the basis of science but classified only 4 elements. Astrology failed to see the earth revolving around the sun whereas science moved on.
