273kelvin replies on Feb 28, 2018:
@MikeFlora !8th sorry I stand corrected. They also said that about slavery, civil rights etc. To the best of my knowledge the US is the only country that has it as part of their constitution. Yet other countries populace own guns. If only 20% of the voters back this, it would be a political vector hard to dismiss. The arguments for its repeal are sound. Every time gun control is muted, you run into the 2nd amendment. Call for its repeal and you might get some real reform instead of the farting around that you have now. The US left are very weak. If you only go for what you think you can get, then you always get far less. Go for what is impossible and see how far you can push it.
Which religion in your opinion is the worst? Islam or Christianity?
273kelvin comments on Feb 26, 2018:
Islam is like Christianity except it`s still in its adolescence. Look at Christendom around the 1400-1500`s. That`s where Islam is now.
273kelvin replies on Feb 27, 2018:
@Gwendolyn2018 To a large extent Christianity has been a victim of its own success. The sunday schools that were initiated by Methodists in the 19th cent. were just that, schools where the poor children could receive a basic education. This emancipation has led to a level of knowledge that made them redundant. I still stand by my original post. The similarities between Islam now and Christianity in the 14 & 1500`s a striking. Not only it its age but in its behavior. Factional wars fought over differences in dogma, fatwas & excommunications etc. The very word " fanatic " stems from the inquisition.

273kelvin comments on Feb 24, 2018:
This is a difficult subject. On one hand I can see the justification of such a ban but I can also see the religious and cultural side too. 273kelvin replies on Feb 25, 2018:
@jorj Sorry Jori but there is a big difference. Firstly male circumcision is not done to lesson the libido or to subjugate the man. If it were then what would that say about the 60% of US males that have had it done. Secondly the act of female circumcision is not a particularly ancient practice and is not prescribed by any religion. As to the culture and sky daddy remark. That shows a terrible lack of sensitivity on the subject (no humor intended). I can only speak from what I know. My daughter is Jewish because her mum is. Thankfully she being a girl I did not have to make this decision. The culture is such that it defines you more than any I have come across. They feel proud when a jew does well and ashamed when one does wrong. The level of guilt they feel would astonish a devout catholic. But what a culture. From the arts, sciences and politics, a hugely disproportional amount of greats have come out of it. Marx, Freud, Einstein,Oppenheimer, Gershwin and Bob Dylan the list is far too long to go on. The USA would not have had the A-bomb when it did if not for Jewish refugees. This is their defense and reasoning. If it aint broke then why fix it? As to the male female thing. Lets face it men make the rules Be that in church or in city hall. If it was that terrible for a guy to have it done, then guys would have stopped doing it.

@AxeElf Facts are not based on faith. I pick up a cup, I drop cup , it falls, fact. I do not believe the cup fell IT FELL. I choose to say that it was gravity not though faith but because it best explains the facts. When Einstein said that light was effected by gravity, he said that 2 stars behind the sun would be visible during an eclipse and they were, fact. Now you can say that I only know these things because I was told them, read them, taught them etc. and you would be right but unless you want to say that our whole civilization is possibly unreal and I only " believe " that 17 children were shot to death in Florida. Then I will continue to go with " fact based " rather than faith based reasoning.

@Lancer The destruction of property/symbols is mute point a few years ago I fell out with a friend of mine over a news story. Two young men of 17 years of age in northern Ireland took a video of themselves burning a poppy.# They then posted it on FB. Subsequently they were charged/prosecuted with committing a hate crime and received 3 months in jail. My point was that whilst I in no way condoned their actions, I would have welcomed the opportunity to debate it with them. I may have told them of Messine ridge which claimed the lives of Thousands of Connaught rangers on one day, then thousands of Ulster Volunteer force on the next. A monument still stands with the two symbols of a shamrock and a black hand on the battles site. This opportunity was denied to me and others by a heavy handed judiciary. I also pointed out to my friend that given the history of NI, this could be viewed as political protest and as such should not be censored. The irony of this debate was that my friend came from East Germany and was 12 when it ceased to exist. She had witnessed many statues and symbols destroyed. # (For our american cousins the poppy is a paper replica sold to commemorate armistice day on Nov 11 each year. All proceeds go to the Royal British Legion who use the money to help veterans and their families. It is referenced in the Beatles song " Penny Lane Behind the shelter in the middle of the roundabout The pretty nurse is selling poppies from a tray " )

The architect was baulking at the price of £200 (this was early 90`s). So I told my friend to stand up for himself and bluntly ask the architect how much he charges for one of his bloody drawings?

@GipsyOfNewSpain Okay I know its difficult to swallow that a few guys with craft knives humbled the USA but lets look at what we do know. Undoubtedly 2 planes did hit the towers. Also it is not disputed that it was the work of Al-Qaeda terrorists. Conspiracies surround whether a, they were working with or with the acquiescence branches of the US govt ie. security agencies. b, The towers collapsed after the attack. Should they have done so? a, What was gained and what was lost? On the face of it it is easy to assume that all the draconian security measures instituted since 9/11 plus the excuses to invade Iraq make it sound plausible. What was lost? The loss of face suffered by the CIA and FBI was immeasurable. To this day the FBI is still on the back foot (re Trump-Russia hearings). The economic fallout resulting from the attack can be directly linked to the crash 2008. Plus it would mean that members of your govt colluded with terrorists in killing thousands of US citizens. It is difficult to imagine that group of people who lets face it sign up to defend their country would agree a, do so or b, keep quiet about it? One or two maybe but that many? b, Is largely dependent on a, For the towers to have collapsed using charges, they would either have to have been placed there beforehand or after the attack. To have placed them there beforehand would presuppose a level of malice aforethought on a huge scale. Not to mention the risk of detection. I will not even entertain the idea that charges were placed post attack. The thought of getting them there and placing them in 2 burning buildings whilst battling though thousands of panicking people is... To what end? The devastation had or would be done anyway. The demolition would be gilding the lily somewhat and again risk detection. When we look at the conspiracies surrounding 9/11. Let us bear in mind that this was an administration so incompetent that it could not even get essential supplies the the beleaguered citizens of New Orleans post Katrina !!

You are applying a science law to a social science, they work on different rules. Newtons law does not take in to account that some thing can be greater than its constituent parts. My favorite story that I tell to many artists and artisans goes like this. A very high class lady walks up to a milliners counter. " Georgio you must help me. Look what this idiot has done with my hair. I have a charity dinner tonight and its a mess! " The milliner looks at her hair and brings forth a yard of silk. Then he fashions a sublime turban, complimenting her features and dress. " That`s wonderful Georgio " says the lady "How much do I owe you? " " That will be $200 ". " What! $200 for a piece of cloth? " The guy takes the turban from her head, unravels it and then hands it back to her saying " The silk is yours for nothing MY expertise is $200 ! "
What's your best feature, beside your personality?

Others are just to preposterous to give any credence to, like the moon landings were faked and filmed in Malta. Of all the places to secretly do something, Malta would be the very last place to choose. It is only 12 miles long and you cannot fart there without everyone knowing. Whether they were faked at all? For me, intelligence is an attractive quality in both men and women. One of the main reasons I like Alanis Morissette so much is that she's intelligent and a real thinker, and it comes through in her music.

Oh on a lighter note. Ian would occasionally earn £5 from the hospital as an exam question. Trainee medical students would examine him and try and diagnose his condition. Which I personally thought was a little harsh on the student`s. Seeing as it took the consultants in one of the largest children's hospital in europe years to get right.

@BlueWave We all knew that Ian would not have long in this world but a life is not necessarily measured in years.More what you bring into it and what you leave behind. In this respect Ian was a giant.

Today, the Republicans are probably more like Galileo and the scientific community more like the Catholic church--climate change deniers are the laughable minority this time.
273kelvin replies on Feb 9, 2018:
@AxeElf Actually I get your point to a degree. There has been a backlash against science similar to the backlash against the catholic church in Galileo's time. The prevalence of the internet is similar to the printing press in terms of effect on existing structures. Lies told about nuclear power can be equated to the excesses of the church which prompted Luther into decent. Add to this the almost impenetrable mysteries of theoretical physics which leave most people baffled and you do have a correlation. However increase of record breaking climate events such as hurricanes and snow in the Sahara leave no doubt on this 1st point, even the GOP

I am reminded of a speech my African ex told me of by Robert Mugabe to the tobacco growers of Zimbabwe. " You have had a great harvest this year but I want you to grow more. Not only will this bring in more revenue for our country but it will kill more white fuckers ".

Firstly climate change is not in dispute even by the GOP it is an undeniable fact the the earth is experiencing a change in climate. The part is disputed by the GOP is how much if any is being caused by mankind, more specifically greenhouse gases and CO2 in particular. The vast majority of the scientific community say that it is. Now I know that the race does not always go to the swift or the strong but thats where the smart money is. Even if it is not a done deal think of it like Pascals wager. If the scientists are right and we do nothing we are fucked. If theyre wrong and we do nothing no change. If theyre right and we act then we might halt or at least slow it down till we can figure something out. If theyre wrong and we do something well we havent really lost anything. Those fossil fuels will still be there for our grandkids and we will have a whole shed load of renewables to lesson our heating bills. Not only that but we wont have to butt kiss Arab kingdoms, Russian oligarchies or banana republics to get it. Secondly I happen to know that you are a god botherer and whilst not fundamental you at least share the view that the bible is Symbolic. God told Noah to save all the animals in the world. I cannot remember him ever saying " Oh thats soo last year. I don't give a shit about them now. Do what you like ". We are destroying whole species at a genocidal rate. Meanwhile alt right Christian fundamentalists actively want the world to end. If they arent actually plotting for it they don't really care what happens in the meantime so long as we all tow the party line and persecute gays. In short just because your the underdog doesnt make you any more right than the other guy. If that were true then I would jump off the edge of a flat earth !
