I also would not get involved with someone who didn’t have a job or was living in their parents house rent free. I think that once you are invested in someone, you accept that they will have ups and downs (everyone does) and the criteria shifts to something more like “making reasonable effort to course correct.” And don’t give/loan money. Maybe you treat more meals and activities for a while, but don’t give or loan money.

My grandparents were very religious and I went to church with them, including bible study. I remember thinking it was all very weird when I was about...8? I joined the youth group at a local church in middle school and made friends. Even then I knew I didn’t really believe in any of that stuff but it was ok because they didn’t make us do god stuff or bible study. By the time I was in high school I had gotten to “I definitely do not believe in god.” As an adult it has become important to my sense of self and the people I seek to have and keep in my life are also non-religious, science and reason oriented people.

A2Jennifer comments on Mar 7, 2020:
I am not a fan of “testing” people but I do think you have accurately identified a red flag. I firmly believe that if you have not met a person face-to-face, that you owe them NOTHING. You don’t owe them a response, you don’t owe them a response in a certain amount of time, you definitely don’t owe it to them to meet their timeline. Both are free to simply stop communicating if they decide the interaction doesn’t have the potential they are looking for. And if someone insinuates that you owe them or makes you feel guilty that is often manipulative. I once sent a message to someone and then logged off (not here) and when I logged back on I had like 8 increasingly hostile messages that got really angry. Whew - glad that came out early!
