Confronting Our Plastic Culture - TheHumanist.com
Amisja comments on Apr 15, 2018:
There are plans for UK to go plastic free...at least the unrecyclable type (single use etc). We need to. It isn't necessary and we can now make really good cellulose alternatives.
If you won an all expenses paid vacation, where would you like to go?

Amisja comments on Apr 15, 2018:
I can't...I just cannot even bear this illegal action (not debated in Parliament). I cannot look at any more images of broken or dead children. I cannot be part of a country who condones this anymore. My heart aches...
Well all, I done went and done it.

Do you ever look at the random pics of strangers and wonder if they are sociopaths?
Amisja comments on Apr 15, 2018:
The medical term in anti-social personality disorder. It happens in 1in 100 people according to the ICD 10. You are unlikely to recognise them just by their appearance (would that it were so easy). The glib, superficial pleasantries they affect mean that there are more likely to appear attractive, exactly the opposite. When I have encountered people with ASPD in the past (as a MH professional working in forensic psychiatry) I have been surprised by how plausible they appear. Tricky characters, even the more harmless ones. The thing to remember is to them, you are of no more value as an entity as a paper cup.
Probably TMI - but I need to talk, and I know you guys won't give me the religion 'feedback' I've ...

I lived in USA, I genuinely mean this, you deserve so much more in respect to social and health care. Is there no respite organisations that can help support you? As regards a partner, having a disabled son would not have put me off so I am sure that there are women who would love to be part of your family. Much love
I recently fell on hard times and needed to move back home.

Was There a Civilization On Earth Before Humans? - The Atlantic.
Amisja comments on Apr 14, 2018:
I think its probably not that simple. I think there have probably been lots of ages of sophisticated beings who have developed civilisations which have probably been wiped out. Its likely they failed to record their history because they believed they would last forever, we all do. Bottle necks in evolution would suggest that there has been a return to less developed technologies which reused and rebuilt over time. It would make sense to me

Growing up
My mother died last evening of cancer. Though we were estranged to some degree I am terribly sad ?
Amisja comments on Apr 13, 2018:
I am so very very sorry. Look after yourself give yourself lots of time, estranged or not sadness will take its toll. Nothing takes the pain away. Just let yourself cry...and slowly you will heal enough to manage a new chapter.
Has anybody changed careers mid-life?
Amisja comments on Apr 13, 2018:
I am a mental nurse, at the age of 42 I decided I needed to enhance my career. I trained as a clinical practitioner and then laterly came into education. I now teach student nurses in university. I love it but part of me still loves the hustle and bustle of the busy clinical acute wards...so now like a complete twit, I do both. It is very tiring but I am not yet ready to give up on my clinical role.
Believers are always asking me, "If there's no god, what's the meaning of life?

Why do so many people on here, especially the self-described atheists, spend so much time discussing...
Amisja comments on Apr 12, 2018:
I loved growing up attending church of England schools and ocassionally going to church. It was fun, lots of pretty songs and jolly people. I just never believed it...any of it. Neither did my parents, grandparents or just about anyone I know. Apart from a few friends who are Muslims and one lady at work who is Christian (swears like a trouper and downs pints like a thirsty miner!) I know no religious people at all. Its like being gay or wearing bikinis...just not for me. If it is for you...good luck to ya. (Just keep away from my kids!)

What are my fellow atheists views on charity and assisting the poor?
Amisja comments on Apr 11, 2018:
Charity, poverty, ownership and wealth are artificial concepts. Neanderthals helped each other out. We knew this millenia ago. That is a normal hominid response. Creating a class distinction that attributes shame to need isn't.
Are you happy where you work?

Love or to be loved
Amisja comments on Apr 11, 2018:
I can't tell. I have a fatal character flaw, I tend to have a high regard for most people I meet, fall in love easily and dislike only a handful. Unfortunately I can never tell if anyone loves me and I tend to doubt that anyone would. Killed my marriage.

Did Jesus exist?
Amisja comments on Apr 9, 2018:
I actually believe Jesus existed. The magic stuff is clearly nonsense but these characters have always existed and probably always will. Why do I think he existed. Well there is some tiny bits of historical evidence josephus flavius does actually mention him (if not be name). He describes an annoying Jewish preacher who was causing the RE a bit of bother. Bart Erhman talks about this at length, he describes how The RE crucified people all the time and consequently did not bother to record them. But the biggest reason I believe in his existence is my knowledge of humankind. A down trodden population will find a 'saviour' amongst them. Think MLK or Gandhi. Also humans love a hero...someone who says pretty words and challenges the status quo. I totally get how a group of young people hearing him speak would have absolutely fallen in love with him. People fell in love with Hitler in much the same way. Some people have the charisma to carry a message forward. Also Jesus' message was about being noble because you were poor and destitue. This had never been said before, this was a huge challenge to the Jewish powers at the time (It still is, think about Trump equating the 'best' people with the wealthiest ones!) Those people would have believed everything Jesus said. Not the son of god...not a magician (although why not, belief is a powerful thing)...just an itinnerant Jewish guy in a desert with sandals. I think Paul really wanted in on that charisma and jumped on this message. I strongly believed that had he not existed Paul would have been challenged. Paul messed up a lot of the original message probably for his own reason. He probably did a lot of damage. He might not have been called Jesus, he probably had a GF and may have been open to same sex encounters but I think he definitely existed.
In death...

What is the definition of the word ‘god’ exactly to you?
Amisja comments on Apr 8, 2018:
Its what people invented to explain why good things happen to bad people, why bad things happen to good people, why perfectly healthy humans die young, why fire rains from the sky, why crops fail etc etc...we know why now...god is redundant

How much of a roll does jealousy play in your past or present relationships?
Amisja comments on Mar 21, 2018:
I feel jealous and relieved. I hate feeling jealous but of course I recognise his good qualities...I see it in our boys. I am proud of him but kinda glad he's some bugger else's problem.

Do you read the bible to get knowledge about it, and to be able to understand why it is fiction?
Amisja comments on Mar 13, 2018:
I find the historical details utterly fascinating. Like the guys in the OT swearing oaths by touching each other's genitals! Seriously interesting but probably based on oral traditions, fairy stories and camp fire horrors.
How do you tell religious people that you're an atheist?
Amisja comments on Mar 13, 2018:
I say, "I'm an atheist" and no one cares because I am English
