@JeffMurray as happened in the last Civil War, the military will divide. A large percentage of the military is non white, they will not be prone to take up arms against their own people for a obviously racist leader. At least a significant portion of the officers will stand with their oath to defend the Constitution and not join the white nationalists attacking the government. Some are already distancing themselves from the Trumplicans. But regardless, the weapons in the hands of everyone today will cause much more death and destruction than the last time when soldiers were still mostly using single fire barrel loaders, not high capacity semi automatic weapons. That is what will make it far worse, even if it is a short lived and localized rebellion.

@TimeOutForMe yes, and Trump was going to hold one of his crazy rallies out there on Juneteenth, the official day of the liberation of the slaves. He was finally convinced that the optics would not play well for his election and backed off to reschedule, which shows how desperate he is to get re-elected. But it didn’t sit well with his Trumplican supporters in Tulsa, who would be happy to burn it down again.

@JeffMurray it was always kind of an illusion (the framers of the Constitution did not include slaves and women in their document, and originally only landowners had the right to vote). Where we go from here is at the very least fragile. We survived one Civil War, not sure we could survive another.

The idea that we are a free country is somewhat of an advertising fantasy. For reference I recommend watching a variety of documentaries. Here is a starter list if you can stream them over there. “Steal This Movie” is an older one about Abbie Hoffman and the anti Vietmam protests. Just this week I watched on PBS.org “The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution” (https://www.pbs.org/independentlens/videos/the-black-panthers-vanguard-of-the-revolution-full-film/) and “I am not your Negro” (https://www.pbs.org/video/i-am-not-your-negro-future-negro-clip-uppanz/) to see what happens to those whose freedom is not free. Also, the entire Ken Burns documentary on the Vietnam years (ten hours, but worth it!) shows how trying to go against the power system is treated. It in many ways reflects some of our current conditions. (https://www.pbs.org/show/vietnam-war/)

@JackPedigo My only hope is that such a large percentage of the military is people of color, they would be more willing to resist an unlawful order to fire on civilians or defend the Orange Buffoon. @Marcie1974 one need only read or watch Serpico to see why standing up to the bad cops rather than just doing your job best you can and keeping your mouth shut is a life changing decision. For most cops (and this applies to so many other organizations, if not human groups of any kind), it’s easier to just find another career or another police force than to break out against a fellow officer. It is the same in the military or prison guards, , as far as results: bad leaders create innocent dead bodies. But standing up can also get you killed.

Not related to the original topic here, but I do believe we need to be able to separate personal foibles and failures from talent and accomplishments. Many of the greatest people in the history of humanity had horror, or less than stellar personal histories. Be it political giants such as George Washington or many of the other singers of the Constitution and later presidents. Or more modern heroes from John Kennedy to Martin Luther King. Even more so, this applies to the entertainment industry. What they were doing in their personal life, short of murder, should not diminish their body of work or their inimitable talent, their true legacy should never be erased, but their failures as people certainly need to be brought to light and acknowledged.

Pretty much sums it up. And you’re right, it is definitely an international problem, one might say even a human problem. The vast majority of people just want to get on with their lives, the opposing minorities control who actually governs. In European countries where there are a dozen or so Parties it becomes even more confusing as they form coalitions to gain power and elect leaders. More democratic perhaps, but more confusing as to who is actually going to be in charge when the dust clears and what exactly their priorities are going to be.

Essentially at this stage we live in two worlds, with a whole bunch of people floating aroun in the middle, not knowing who to believe. Or just waiting to see who wins so they can figure out how to cope. It’s a typical human condition: the vast majority don’t really care who is in charge, they just learn to cope with those who have the most power over their lives. This is quite obvious if you read any documentary on civilian life in war. The people cheer for whichever side happens to control their village, until it changes hands, then they welcome those troops in the hopes of not being slaughtered.

@Observer-Effect I fear what is going to happen after the next election in November. No matter who wins, it is going to be a slow and long process to bring the country back from the four year Trump shit show. After armed protestors stormed the Michigan capital building, even though no shots were fired this time, the future is looking dim. I think this was just a test run to see what they could get away with.

This, of course, is exactly what Trump wants and keeps his brand front and center. We are not living in a normal world, and that doesn’t even include the virus, it started the day Trump announced he was running. We are now living in a Trump managed television “reality” show.

Where my mom lives they are only serving one meal a day, delivered to their door (knock and run style). All public areas and gatherings of any kind have been canceled. For singles like my mom, it basically constitutes solitary confinement. If they did that in prison it would be called cruel and unusual punishment! Yet she is paying $1,700 a month for what prisoners (criminals) are getting free.

@Gwendolyn2018 for a period of time, the Right Wing militias were under a lot of pressure from the government and went underground to a great degree. They still existed, but like the Klan, became somewhat secretive and hidden. With the rise of The Republican Far Right, and the Internet, they have become much more open, able to recruit and get their message into the mainstream. With the election of Trump and the Republican led Senate, they have become fearless. They know the Justice system is now on their side, courts will rule in their favor and their president thinks they are “good people.” This is incendiary like spraying gasoline on burning coal.
