Microcosm of the future relationship
Barnie2years comments on Oct 5, 2018:
I read these things and wonder how these guys get dates and I can’t. I always either cook or take a date out to dinner. Never ask them to pay for anything (don’t refuse if they make a fuss about paying their own!).
One thing North America does NOT do bigger and better than the UK is.

If you want a hot tub, get a hot tub! I can never keep the water in a bathtub hot enough long enough. And I hate lukewarm water. Give me a hot shower with a strong spray or better yet a massaging spray, any day! Or a nice big hot tub on a cold winter day.

How do you know if you’ve really ever been in love?
Barnie2years comments on Oct 1, 2018:
Love is what you want it to be. I’ve been so in love that I felt like my feet weren’t touching the ground after we spent the night together. I’ve been in love with a women I wanted to be touching 24 hours a day! I still love that last one even though we have no physical relationship, which hurts something terrible. But it’s all I have, better than nothing.
What are your favorite proofs against the Bible?
Barnie2years comments on Oct 1, 2018:
The Bible that is in use by the majority of Christian beliefs was pieced together from tales written by hundreds of scribes from hundreds of legends. Tales from various beliefs were incorporated into the legends passed down verbally over thousands of years, then reinterpreted over thousands more. It is a book of fiction based loosely on history and events at various times. It has the same value as worshipping Harry Potter (some day it could happen). And then all those legends and scrolls were condensed into a single work by a Roman emperor to consolidate his power, with any parts that did not affirme his power left out. This book was then translated by other monarchs and religious orders to suite their own agendas. Up to present times where variations are still published from time to time to serve religious leaders by “simplifying” the language to advance their own agenda. There is nothing more believable in the Bible than there is in Spartacus or Ulysses.

If not, I will download it's brain using life support and curse it for eternity! LOL

Barnie2years comments on Sep 27, 2018:
Totally expected. Trump wants this so bad he would skewer anyone Republican who doesn't go along. This man is Trump's get out of jail free card when the Muller report comes out. He can't let a little thing like women outing him as a predator stop the confirmation. Like he said yesterday, all the women lied about him, some even after he paid them thousands of dollars! Maybe one reason the Democrats waited to bring them forward, Trump would have been offering them bribes to keep silent.

Living alone when you're sick. How do you feed yourself?
Barnie2years comments on Sep 27, 2018:
Spend a lot of time inhaling the steam and vapors from the soup. That should help too. I usually don't have much of an appetite, so soup fills the bill, though I rarely make my own. Did make a couple of gallons of cabbage and sausage soup earlier this year though. Thankfully I rarely get sick. For the 42 years I worked in the public sector, I hardly ever took sick days. Loads of high dosage vitamin C (8 grams or more a day) as soon as I felt something coming on, rarely had more than a day or two before things improved.
How do you move from cheerfully flirting to being vulnerable?
Barnie2years comments on Sep 27, 2018:
In various sales jobs I have had over the years I was great at talking about whatever I was selling, terrible at the close. Sadly, the same goes for relationships. I love talking and can hold up my end of a conversation with strangers. But these interactions usually end in goodbye because I am incapable of asking if they are single or would like to get together sometime, exchange numbers or any other thing that might lead to further involvement. This can be very frustrating, but hard to overcome.

Barnie2years comments on Sep 26, 2018:
If you have never watched it and have a chance, the Amazon Prime series “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” demonstrates this taken to the extreme. And as it works out, how useless it is. Every night the main character gets out of bed after her husband falls asleep, to go in the bathroom and wash all the makeup off her face, take out her hair and put it in curlers and put on a comfortable nightly. Then in the morning, before he wakes up, she goes back in the bathroom and applies her makeup, put on her body sculpting undergarments and do her hair so that her husband never has to see her “au natural”. ?

But if they can wade through all my Atheist memes on their timeline without unfriend me, I can tolerate their occasional religious memes. By the same token, if it becomes a constant thread or they are filling my inbox with crap like you got, blocking becomes the only option.
Wow after reading most of these posts, I feel like an overly subservient housewife.

Men who never learned to cook
Barnie2years comments on Sep 24, 2018:
OK, different issues here. I cook for myself, have since I left my home at 17 to get married. I had little training, my Mom did not encourage us (one sister) to spend time in the kitchen. But she was a traditional housewife for the time. My first marriage suffered from my expectation that this was the norm and the wife was in charge of housework. Both my first and second wife had not had any training in the kitchen by their mothers, even though the second’s mother was an excellent cook! To a certain degree, we learned to cook together, though the second was quite happy to cook alone. I never had any expectations of meals at a certain time of day or even a certain quality. As long as it was food I liked, it could be made most any way. You say your cooking skills are excellent and healthy. This might intimidate me if I was cooking for you. It caused issues when my last wife insisted that food had to be on the table at 5:00, with little exceptions. I have always eaten later in the evening, not even hungry at 5:00. Then, she was planning meals days ahead of time. I open the fridge or the freezer, pick something out, then when I am ready to cook, decide how and with what I will make it. And much of what I eat is of questionable health value ?. So she did most of the cooking, I did special meals, holiday meals or when there was something specific I was hungry for. Speaking for myself, I prefer to work in the kitchen by myself. I know what I want done and am not great at delegating. As for catching a kitchen feel while she was cooking, it wasn’t necessarily to have immediate sex, more I just loved the way she felt! ?

Trump is destroying the country and yet he has these people cheering him on.
Barnie2years comments on Sep 22, 2018:
Despotic leaders enjoy the same suspension of reality from their believers as do the televangelist and snake oil salesmen. A part of the human brain is ripe for these con men and women to worm their way into it and take over their thought process. They become unable to sustain rational thought and for many they are led to perceive some form of success. Under the very worst of dictators, some people become very powerful and successful. They in turn make their followers believe that at some time, they will achieve that success as well. It is the entire premise of Pyramid schemes. At some point of course they collapse destroy themselves. Sadly we may see that in this country if we do not succeed in changing the momentum in November.
I am a very tolerant person.
Barnie2years comments on Sep 22, 2018:
Most pro Trump posts tend to come from trolls, be hateful and denigrating, like their idol. No surprise there. Any Atheist who supports Trump and his Christian Crusade kind of has self hatred issues to start with. Kind of like gays for Trump, who apparently want all the progress they have made toward equal treatment under the law to be reversed. You can be either of those things and be fiscal conservatives, but not what we have in the Oval Office now, a degenerate regressive who wants to take the country back to the era of Robber Barons.

Barnie2years comments on Sep 20, 2018:
Old pictures often have tales that go with them. Future generations may never have the opportunity to know these things, with everything being digital and on different formats. The days of finding a box of old pictures may be over. I found pictures of my parents when they were much younger, before they were married and had me. Some of when they were just children. It is kind of shocking, you don't think of them that way, they were always adults from the time you first met. You are lucky to have been able to see them in ways you never did before.
Where are you from?
Barnie2years comments on Sep 20, 2018:
Having grown up in Europe, I am always interested in where people are from. Over the years spent in schools there, I met kids from all around the world and have interest in meeting people from other cultures, mostly because I find them more interesting to talk to than Americans who have never gone outside a 100 mile circle of town they were born in. And I am always looking for opportunities to practice my French which I have managed to maintain for almost 60 years. And while I can usually detect a French accent, I have met quite a few who’s accent was so subtle that I would have guessed wrong. So don’t be so quick to condem when the question comes up. They may just be looking for a conversation starter and a new friend.

Barnie2years comments on Sep 19, 2018:
I spend much of my day on Facebook and here. There is constant updates on news, opinions and questions which I find interesting. And also many posts that are just pure fun. I can frequently express feelings and thoughts that I have had for decades and never really had an outlet for. I have been unfriended by any people who don’t like what I have to say, but have been often surprised by others whom I had no idea they felt as I do about topics from religion (or lack of) to politics. And much of Facebook is just fun! All the animal videos, crazy things people do videos, and cartoons. I follow news from France via Le Monde news outlet. I have engaged some interesting people in discussions of various topics and been informed of movies and books that I might not have heard of any other way. I worked as a bus driver most of my life, where I had to interact daily with hundreds of people I really would have preferred not to and was not generally able to respond to comments without getting into situations that would have caused trouble. So I love being online where I can control who I interact with and what topics I choose to comment on.
Things have been really tough lately.
Barnie2years comments on Sep 18, 2018:
That is certainly one of the toughest things about being a non believer; the absence of community and networking that churches offer. Of course those support systems come at a price; you must pledge allegiance to believe the unbelievable.
Did you ever notice about history?
Barnie2years comments on Sep 18, 2018:
If you watch the NPR Vietnam series by Ken Burns it is one of the most unbiased history documentaries I have ever watched (10 hours worth!). During the course of the series, who’s timeline starts in the very early 20th century history of Vietnam, he interviews and documents the stories of Vietnamese, French and American civilians, soldiers and leaders. His interviews include American soldiers and war protestors, Vietcong, North Vietnamese Regular army, South Vietnamese army soldiers and civilians. It’s a shame more effort to do this with other wars was not made. I think Ken Burns did documentary films on World War II and the Civil War, but I am not sure they are as inclusive. And sadly he received flak from certain groups in our country for humanizing the Vietnamese and not aggrandizing the US role in the destruction of this country. That ideology is the reason history books are usually very one sided.
When to switch primarily identifying as an Agnostic to Atheist?
Barnie2years comments on Sep 17, 2018:
I called myself an Agnostic for a large part of my life. I didn’t believe in god, and thought the Bible was at best a badly written fictional novel, loosely based on ancien Middle Eastern history. But there were things that happened in my life that random just couldn’t seem to explain. I would call it destiny, but destiny would need a controller, which would lead back to a god, which I couldn’t justify as existing. I also considered Atheists to be the “fundamentalists” of non believers, pushing their non belief on others as Evangelicals pushed Christianity. Then I heard about the chaos theory, which explained things that happened that seemed to not be random, without involving a deity to run things. This, a better understanding of what Atheism is and a more militant view of Christian privilege, allowed me to quite proudly call myself an Atheist! ?

Barnie2years comments on Sep 15, 2018:
Not really. I’m dead. I do have my wishes know however. I chose the Maple tree because every year, when all those little propeller things and leaves litter his yard he will have to think of me! ?

What happens after a human being dies?
Barnie2years comments on Sep 12, 2018:
I have never understood what is so hard about accepting that our time on this earth is limited, like every other living creature, and when it is over, it’s over. Human narcissism seems to know no bounds. The idea that as humans we are so incredibly important that we should exist in some form forever. Even though we reproduce at an alarming rate, use and destroy natural resources at unsustainable rates, cause extinctions of other creatures by our greed among other wonders. If we make such a mess of our planet (millions of tons of trash floating around the oceans, millions of tons of pollution in our air), imagine a place where all the human population lives forever! No thanks!

Love for some of us is just not meant to be.

I don’t eat at Chic-fil-a because there are none close by and the two times I did, I was not impressed enough to want to go back. I find myself more likely to boycott businesses that openly supported Trump than ones that promote their religion, though the two seem inclined to merge at this point. But like you, I might break with my resistance if it was a matter of convenience. If I went to a party and the only beer on hand was Yuengling, I would drink one rather than have none! In the case of Chic-fil-a I do have a certain admiration of the fact that the owner sticks to his guns and stays closed on Sundays, what could be their busiest day. I’ve known many religiously oriented businesses that, once they started making serious money, found profit more inviting than piety.
I’ve just had my very first conversation with a stranger who is an atheist.

Early this week, two of my close family members passed away within 24 hours of each other.
Barnie2years comments on Sep 6, 2018:
No. I much prefer to think back on time spent with the person who died. And reflect on what they had done or accomplished during their time on this planet. What have they left behind (children, grandchildren, a successful business, a legacy of humanitarian works)? These realities are far more worthy than the idea that somehow they are in some unknown place doing some unknown thing with billions of other dead people who they don’t know waiting for me to die to join them. I always found the whole idea of an afterlife to be kind of ridiculous. Where is it? What is it? Why would I want to go there?
Reincarnation or DNA Memory?
Barnie2years comments on Sep 4, 2018:
It is not reincarnation so much as evolution. The basis of evolution is that creatures evolve to best survive in their environment. For much of the animal world, certain characteristics evolve to best low them to fit into their environment; a camel evolved to go long periods without water making it able to survive the desert. A chameleon whose skin can change color became better at camouflage and evolved better. As humans, we have adopted many forms and sizes, skin colors and abilities. So your DNA would hold maybe not your memory of what happened to your ancestors, but the evolutionary qualities that allowed them to reproduce and thrive. So, to use the slave example, being able to run and evade captors, to have the spirit to be free, would be traits that could be passed on to future generations through DNA, and hearing history might trigger those same emotions, making it seem like a memory when it is just a reaction.
Is public groping assault if not consensual?
Barnie2years comments on Sep 4, 2018:
After my own experience, I have a tendency to be somewhat skeptical and open to the idea of “unintentional.” Years back, I used to go roller skating two or three times a week at a local rink. The vast majority of the time there were very few adults on the rink, and most of those were there with their young children. I was one of few there by myself. I was a fairly proficient skater and skated fairly fast when the music was fast, feeling I could react quickly enough to kids falling in my path or making unexpected moves. One evening, as I was going along at a pretty good clip a group of three young teen girls suddenly came out of the center of the rink directly in front of me. I did not have time to stop, and had I colided with them, I was substantially bigger and one of them might have gotten hurt. So I did my best to cut around them and used my hand to keep the one on the end to my side and out of my skates. No one fell and I continued skating, no harm done. Shortly after, I noticed one of the rink guards seemed to be following me around. I was not doing anything unusual, so I didn’t worry about it too much. After a while, he came up alongside of me and addressed me. He said a young girl had lodged a complaint with him that I had touched her “inappropriately”. I was floored! First, for a moment, I couldn’t even think what would have made anyone even say that. Then I thought of the close call earlier. I had no idea where I had touched her as I was busy trying not to flatten her! I explained to the guard what had happened, and thankfully he believed me (I was a regular at the rink, so the employees kind of knew me). But the situation really shook me up! What if the staff had not believed me or known me? How could I have proved that I had been avoiding a collision, not groping? I kind of stopped going skating after that, out of the realization that I was putting myself at risk. What if her father had been there and reacted the way some of the people on this post have? I would have been defending myself against possible violence for something I wasn’t even aware of doing. I have not seen the video of Ariana and the preacher, only the sill photo. Given their difference in size, the emotions of the moment, the man’s position as the orator of the service, I would be inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt. My guess is Ariana who would be most knowledgeable of what happened at that moment felt the same way. It is only trial by social media, where everyone feels the need to be judge and jury of situations taken out of context that can get you condemned with little recourse to defend yourself.

And I’ve picked enough pubic hair out of my mouth over the years to not be overly concerned about the short interruption.

Can someone explain golfing to me?
Barnie2years comments on Aug 29, 2018:
Golf is a game of self mental control. Even if you are playing in a group, how you play is determined by your own mindset. Each time you step up to the ball, no matter how well you hit it the the last time, how well your game has gone to that moment, your immediate concentration will determine how you you hit the ball this time. Your stance, the lie of the ball, the depth of the grass, the club you chose, your swing fulcrum, the power of your swing, movement of your body, ability to focus on your ball through the entire swing. So many points at which a minor error can severely affect the flight of that ball. Even on the green, the slope of the green, the height and texture of the grass, the moisture on the grass have to be taken into account. It is like playing chess against nature, with every move against a different opponent. ?⛳️
Would you rather be crazy rich or deeply in love?
Barnie2years comments on Aug 28, 2018:
I would take deeply in love in a heartbeat! Watch all the movie stars and assholes like Trump, makes being rich not seem so important to happiness compared to many people with limited means who have the love of their life by their side through thick and thin.

Does age matter to you when it comes to love or dating?
Barnie2years comments on Aug 28, 2018:
If someone was interested in me and it wasn't a fake account (I have had two of them so far, but they are pretty obvious), I would never not explore the possibility that we could have a relationship just because of an age difference. I dated a 39 year old when I was 19 and a 37 year old when I was 57. So it is quite clear that age is not a show stopper. But when I am looking for possible connections I have been keeping a 10 year down, three year up search criteria, just because I think there is a better chance of finding someone with more in common in that range.
How are members feeling about all the memes and links on the site? Asking for a friend. :)
Barnie2years comments on Aug 28, 2018:
No problem. If they are not relevant to me, I just move on, like I would any other post that is not of interest. If they are really good, I post them to Facebook or comment. There is no way to please everyone with everything. If you don't like something, don't comment, just go to something you do.
I'm not sure how eloquent these posts should be, but here goes: I've been watching old star trek ...
Barnie2years comments on Aug 28, 2018:
It is entertainment reflective of the time they were filmed. A couple of nods to a supreme being got you browny points with the believers without acknowledging a direct religious connection. Sadly, I think we are headed back that way if you look at new shows coming out this fall. The funniest one is the one where God is sending text messages to a young man who was having doubts about his faith. This is why I delete messages from unknown phone numbers! ?
Facebook rant: connecting with old friends - great.
Barnie2years comments on Aug 28, 2018:
You're right; sometimes it's easy to ignore all the pray stuff, other times it just boils your blood! The friend of a friend just found out she has breast cancer. First thing to do? Go to church and pray with your fellow prayer group. Who are you praying to, you morons?? If your God can cure your cancer, than why did he give it to you in the first place? Just to mess with you? A test of your faith? And if it doesn't get cured, then what? Your God felt the need to torture you for a few years before you die? This line of thinking drives me nuts! I generally just disregard it and keep my mouth shut. But when they are offering to pray for me, it can be almost impossible. And don't bring your damn preacher into the hospital to see me, or all bets are off!
Are atheist as racist as religious people?
Barnie2years comments on Aug 27, 2018:
From what I have seen on here and in other forums, people are people, regardless of belief. Much of racism is based on fear; fear of the unknown, fear of the not like us, fear passed down through generations. Fear can also be enhanced by the media. If your most common exposure to people of color, Muslims or even Jews is movies or television, you are going to have a very skewered view of these people. Though there has been some improvement, dark skinned people, especially men, were always portrayed as the drug dealers, the pimps, the criminals in most TV shows and movies. Muslims are generally portrayed as terrorists and thieves, Jews as money hoarders and con men. If your primary exposure to people not like you is the media, chances are you are going to have low opinions of those “others.” I ran into this a lot in the small villages of Pennsylvania, where the only contact many people had with anyone not white was very limited, but they had TV and movie theaters. Even if you were a non believer, your views on race were being formed in negative ways.
Masturbation Yeah...that got your attention didn't it?
Barnie2years comments on Aug 27, 2018:
I was masurbating before I even knew what an orgasm was! I just knew it felt good to rub my dick when it was hard. Later, in my teens when I discovered orgasms, it became an almost daily thing! During the early years, it required no mental stimulation, it just felt good! Later, my mom’s romance books and even James Bond series supplied mental stimulation. In fact most anything mildly sexual could get things going. Sex Ed at my house was my dad giving me an age appropriate book on sex when I was around 11 or 12. You know the kind: a man and a woman fall in love, they get married, go to bed and the man put his penis in the woman’s vagina... It did teach me what balls did (sperm) which to that point all I knew was they were extremely painful if they were whacked in any way. And I found out that women had a whole different set of equipment rather than just missing pieces! We had played “Doctor” with girls, so I had some idea of what they looked like between the legs Now, masturbation is just a release to avoid wet dreams and thanks to free porn, remind me of what I used to do. I just gave my stepson a handful of condoms (I do work with Planned Parenthood, so I had a good supply), since he and his girlfriend are getting ready to move into a physical relationship. With both my son and stepson, I tried to let them know there was no topic off limits, no judgement.

Barnie2years comments on Aug 26, 2018:
As it seems to be the consensus, it would depend. Too many variables for a definite statement; what kind of cancer, how early it was caught, what treatments would involve, and cost. At my age, prostrate cancer, probably not. A cancer that would be slow and painful? I would have to consider a trip to a country or state with right to die laws.

Why is it that some people here are only capable of leaving derogatory comments on your posts ...
Barnie2years comments on Aug 26, 2018:

Grandchildren
Barnie2years comments on Aug 25, 2018:
I have two grandsons (11 & 7). My son waffledon having more. Had a vasectomy after the second one, had it reversed after him and his wife got into some goofy religious stuff after he got caught cheating on her. Then he had a second vasectomy last year thanks to my second grandson proved to be a handful! ?

Is living together an acceptable alternative to marriage?
Barnie2years comments on Aug 23, 2018:
I have been married three times, divorced three times. I have never been with someone who just wanted to live together. My last wife and I cohabited for about two years while my previous wife was holding us hostage to try and squeeze a better financial settlement for herself. But there were visa issues that were running out, so marriage to the last one was the only way to keep her and her son in country.
Now that I'm dating again, the issue of who pays comes up.
Barnie2years comments on Aug 23, 2018:
I have never asked a date to pay, I just assume I am if I invited them to go out. If they offer to chip in, or pay the tip, I won’t argue about it. If for whatever reason they invited me out, then I will offer to pay the tip at least. If the date is going Dutch, then that should be discussed before the bill arrives at the table, I would think. Given that getting a date for me seems to be harder than what many people seem to have finding a sex partner, what do I know?
MEN: What would your reason be for asking a woman what she does for a living, upon meeting her?
Barnie2years comments on Aug 23, 2018:
I would think it is just a quick way to see if you have something that takes up a lot of your time in common, nothing more sinister. If I worked in the medical field and I find out you do too, we suddenly have a whole lot to talk about. Maiasaura below who gets asshole comments on her job would have probably gotten asshole responses to whatever topic was brought up! I was never ashamed to say what I did for a living and it never occurred to me that the person was trying to scope out my earning potential. Maybe I was wrong. If you do something interesting, I want to know more, and it can lead into your other interests.
To reuse or not to reuse, that is the question.
Barnie2years comments on Aug 22, 2018:
My ex-wife, both when we were together, and even more so after we split up, obtained much of her furniture and decore from roadside trash piles and free yard displays. Repourposed school lockers, old wash tubs, she was very creative in that way. Even had her friends keeping an eye out for useable curbside treasures. Good for you! Myself, I just tend to keep things way beyond their intended use, mostly by treating them gently! If it goes into my trash, it’s dead!
This is so true.
Barnie2years comments on Aug 22, 2018:
A civil discussion requires two people with actual, factual information to support their position. When it is fact against faith, there in no room for discussion. Peace is only agree to disagree and drop the topic.

There is already a brain eating virus in the United States. It seems to affect mostly Republicans and makes them indifferent to lies and fabrications, with an inability to distinguish real life from TV reality shows. They have turned the presidency into a bad version of a reality show.

The believers will think it was caused by gay marriage and abortion in the US. Others will think they are safe because it’s a biblical prophecy come true and only sinners and Athiest will be culled (they will be wrong, of course).
Ok.
Barnie2years comments on Aug 20, 2018:
Were they praying someone would get hurt to make it more interesting? Or just that people smashing cars together in a well tested arena situation would all come out unhurt, which they usually do with or without a prayer? I hate it at ball games when, after they sing the secular, no mention of god Star Spangled Banner, they feel the need to throw in God Bless America, an adaptation of the British anthem. It is the only time I feel like taking a knee!

Barnie2years comments on Aug 20, 2018:
Stay on this site for constructive and enlightening interactions with fellow non believers. Change your status to seeking community and don’t flatter yourself that just because you don’t believe in god all the women on here are going to be lining up to have sex with you. Work the sex issue out with your wife, one way or the other. (we couldn’t with my last wife, which is one of the reasons I am alone) Then decide if you both can compromise or need to move on. Then come back and change your status to looking to meet. Of course maybe you could talk your wife into an open marriage, then as long as your honest with whomever you might meet, could work out.
I deeply believe that there is no guiding Force or Purpose in life -- only what you make out of it.

This of course is why headline writing has become an art form and staple of “fake news” as our dear leader likes to call it. I feel quite certain Trump never gets past the headline on most everything he is given to read. Making world changing decisions based on the headline of a detailed DOD report, or an environmental report has consequences that are generally not positive. I believe it is at the heart of our societal deterioration, “sound bite” news is not how you learn what is real.
Too much, just right or not enough?
Barnie2years comments on Aug 18, 2018:
Way to put it out there. Maybe should have used all caps though, the “chosen” seem to like that! ?
