Every time I think I'm ready to start dating.
Barnie2years comments on Jul 21, 2018:
Since I so rarely even get a response, let alone a date, it hasn’t been an issue.
Well, that’s one option.

Urgh.

Been a rough day. My mom passed away this morning after battling health issues for many years.

Losing parents is never easy. When they suffered much before their time, maybe a little consolation that the suffering ended. Sorry for your loss.
Yesterday sadly I had to go home after spending a week with Dan at his home in Albany, NY.
Barnie2years comments on Jul 20, 2018:
After a five year or so healing period where we only communicated when absolutely necessary I renewed totally non sexual relationships with two ex-wives. The first was when our first grandchild was on the way, we made peace for our son’s sake. I had no one else in my life, so it didn’t cause any problem. Later on she got metastatic breast cancer. Thankfully I had talked her into going to the hospital where it was diagnosed. She made it through eight years before passing away over a year ago. The last wife left me to move in with her boyfriend. After another five years of little communication, in a tirade she informed me that her boyfriend (the relationship was already on the skids) was ignoring her son. He was a great kid, I loved him as much as I did her, but had stayed away because I didn’t want him to deal with multiple fathers (his birth father never bothered to stay in touch). So when I found out the new guy was not actively spending time with him, I said I would like to spend time with him. It went from that to being the best friend after she finally threw him out. But still no physical relationship, and I still have no other relationship, so at least she is someone to talk to beside the dog. Not ideal, I would love to have more, but since I can’t even get a date for coffee at this point, at least I have someone to drive me to the hospital if I need a ride! ?

I have never hoped for something so much in my life! This circus needs to end, but it won't until Cheeto is out of office. But a congressional flip would slow the giant fool down a little and maybe keep him from throwing the entire Supreme Court out of wack for the next 50 years.
How many holocausts, and how many genocides have there been since records began
Barnie2years comments on Jul 19, 2018:
Sadly they are still happening in many parts of the world. And very close to happening in many others, including ours. When you have a leader who can obliterate people’s sense of reality like Trump does to his devoted followers, the path to violence and genocide is short. I thankfully feel that our country has the moral strength to overcome the ignorance, but it may come at a cost.

The thing travelled to Slovakia and back and was on his bed until he was 11 or 12 and was getting laughed at when he had a friends for sleepovers. I know his mom still has it stashed somewhere.

My feeling is in my life that many people need me, no one actually wants me. In other words, they don’t give a shit what I need. As long as I show up every time they have a problem to be solved, I’m gold. Since I have nothing else in my life, I take this as the closest thing to a sign of affection. For any real love, I depend on my puppy ? and my hand.

Barnie2years comments on Jul 17, 2018:
The vast majority of humans cannot accept finality of life. It is one of the primary drivers of religion, I believe. They find it hard to accept that they are insignificant and only have a limited time to exist. Even my father, who never stated it was I believe an agnostic, was hedging his bets near the end of his life, and trying to believe in god. As my religious friends like to say, if my non belief is wrong it will be too late when I’m dead to change. If they are wrong in believing, when they die, they won’t know the difference. Doesn’t change my outlook, still don’t believe.

Prayer at extended family meals
Barnie2years comments on Jul 17, 2018:
For family I will go so far as holding hands, but don’t bow head or say amen at the end. Holding hands with a family member is not traumatic, and the moment (hopefully, some do go on) spent while they mumble some innate nonsense is little price to pay for family harmony. And if someone wants to call me out for not bowing my head, ask them what they were doing looking around! ?

Given that Trump really is so awful why are people complaining about Obama?
Barnie2years comments on Jul 15, 2018:
Mostly people on the Right trying to deflect attention from their Dear Leader. The eight years Obama was in office the Right Racist jackals were doing everything in their power to spread lies and disinformation on the first non white president. Add to that a majority Republican congress sworn to do nothing that would benefit the middle or lower class, it kind of makes for a lame duck president. With any luck we can do the same to Trump this November if the Russian don't come up with a means of totally sabotaging the elections.
Patriotism. Is it worth it?
Barnie2years comments on Jul 14, 2018:
What I find funny is that those most vocal about flag worshipping are also most likely to be Ten Commandment worshipers. One of those commandments is not worshiping false idles, which in my mind would include a flag. You will never see an American flag on an Amish farm for just that reason. But the religion is overflowing with hypocrisy.
What do you think about cults vs. sects?
Barnie2years comments on Jul 13, 2018:
I drove route buses in the Amish country for years. I will never forget during the Branch Davidian stand off and tragedy I was working one of our routes that transports many Amish people (they are not allowed to drive cars or even have a license, but they can use public and for hire transportation). Normally the Amish are not overly talkative, though some more than others, especially if there are other Amish onboard. But when the bus was empty or only had English (non Amish) on board they would strike up a conversation. This particular guy had a newspaper with him, coming back from the city and was sitting up near me. After some pleasantries he asks "What do you think of these cults?" I almost swallowed my tongue! LOL Here sits a man with a long beard, no mustache, black clothing and a broad brimmed hat, who is not allowed to drive a car, has to farm using horses to pull the equipment, not allowed to have a phone in his house, or transact business on a Sunday, asking what makes people join cults! I acutally said "some people would consider your beliefs to be a cult." He just kind of chuckled it off and got off at his stop a few minutes later. So I guess the answer to the above would be if you believe in it, it is not a cult but rather a sign of your faith in ??? Something, someone, to whom you have ceded control of your life out of fear of missing out on something? I don't know, I have never felt the need to do that.

Half of those words, except for bless you and amen, are words that have meaning outside of religion. Living in Europe for ten years growing up, I was in more impressive cathedrals than I can remember. They were not moving in the sense that I felt a religious epiphany, but I was moved by the architecture and the thought that many generations had a hand in the planning and construction of these buildings. I felt much the same way at Greek and Roman ruins, German castles and pictures of Inca and other South American structures. The craftsmanship of these buildings with, what at the time were rather primitive tools, is amazing.

Barnie2years comments on Jul 9, 2018:
Ha! God gives them the diseases and science and doctor help them live! Never heard a religious person follow that line of thought! I have also suggested to people who go on about how intensive medical treatment that is successful is a miracle from god; where the hell was their god 20, 30 or 50 years ago when even what is now routine medical care was primitive and usually deadly. Your first take on their god being an abusive lover is right on! Beat you down so you worship him in the hopes the next beating won’t be so bad if it comes despite your best effort. Reminds me of a family member going through a series of issues with her family saying “why me?” I told her why not? Everyone goes through bad times, rough days, times when life just seems to be working against us. We non believers just have to get up in the morning a muddle on, knowing that like those who pray to the imaginary friend, life will have ups to go with the downs if we seek them out!
This question is going to be controversial, but with the subject matter it's to be expected.
Barnie2years comments on Jul 9, 2018:
I have seen white women on dating sites say they are only interested in dating black men or only looking to date other women. It’s really no different than wanting to date thin women or full bodied women, short or tall women. Most people have a phisical preference they gravitate to, even if it isn’t put in stone. Go for what makes you feel comfortable and what you want. I did note that you mentioned several times having a mental illness. I hope it is not related to the assaults and regardless of why, that you are getting help with it. There is non religious support groups and therapists out there, seek them out.
As a non believer, do you also reject cultural and social aspects that have religious roots.
Barnie2years comments on Jul 9, 2018:
Since holidays like Christmas and Easter are based on Pagan festivals anyway, just focus on the giving aspect and the tree and bunny. Though I must say, I hate Christmas, not because it is a religious holiday, but has become a greed and corporate boondoggle rather than a time to be sharing and caring. I like Thanksgiving as a time to spend with family and we can always be thankful for what we have without giving credit to invisible spirits.

Men/Women, Is sex a requirement for an enjoyable romantic relationship?
Barnie2years comments on Jul 9, 2018:
I love your description of the husband in the photo!! ? But in answer to your question: a sexless marriage, or even relationship, would not work for me. The intimacy and bonding of sex is in my book as close as two people can get. I can like you from a distance, but when I love you, I want to be part of you. When I say sex, I am not talking about the act of physical intercourse alone, but the sensuality of bodily contact, skin against skin, extended foreplay, tasting, kissing.... OK, gotta stop now, these are all things I have not had in my life for way too long! ?
Relationship
Barnie2years comments on Jul 9, 2018:
I think what would cause major issues in this type of relationship is outside forces. Assuming that the couple could be so in love as to be able to respect their opposing views on a fundamental, life defining belief, in most cases there would be family to deal with. II, as an Atheist, have developed an understanding with my family, if they are believers, that has allowed them to accept me as I am. Will I be able to convince my partner’s family that I am not “leading their daughter into hell!” If she has a good relashionship with her family, based on their religious beliefs, and I am unwilling to participate in some way in their ceremonies and holidays without feeling like I am going to vomit because of the stupidity of the sermons and activities required, will it not cause her to feel the need to choose sides? Will there not be constant attempts to bring me into the fold by her family members, even if she is able to not do it herself? I have been in relationships with Christians, but they were not devout and loved sleeping in Sunday’s as much as me! ? And at the time I was a little more malleable about going to church for special occasions than I am now. I still show up at those few funerals and weddings I get invited to, but find a need to grit my teeth the whole time I am there. How would that work if my partner was a devout Sunday church attender?

I find this interesting, given that from historical perspective, many artists seem to have been deeply devout, at least in the subjects of their creations, paintings or music. I am also thrilled to find so many people from other countries have found their way to these forums. Having grown up in Europe, I enjoy hearing the voices of the world expressed, since many of those countries have shed much of their religious cloak, or are making greater strides than we are. I was also able to keep my work health insurance plan at 35% copay until I qualified for Medicare at 65. Too bad so many people don’t see the benefits of Unions, because none of this would have been possible without mine. I will always be a Union supporter! And thanks to that, I have not had to make any major changes to my life; live in the same house, drive a nice car, and have gotten through a few medical issues without going broke. Religion is a harmful addiction.
Barnie2years comments on Jul 4, 2018:
This is also the reason so many rehab groups an organizations are religiously oriented. Addicts can become the most dedicated believers if they can channel their addiction into a religious belief, and the crazier their faith, the more of those chemicals get released, the more they believe. My guess is, if the Westboro Church members were tested when they are out spewing their hate messages, their dopamine and other euphoric numbers would be off the charts!
Religion is a harmful addiction.
Barnie2years comments on Jul 4, 2018:
I don’t know. For many people, thanks to the group support system of a church, and the ability of the pastors (con men or not), the euphoria of belief can be a lifelong high. I have known many people who go through life with a smile on their face, even in the middle of adversity. I have also known deeply religious people who were the most miserable malcontents you could imagine, but didn’t give up their faith out of belief that their god was just testing them. All they need is one thing to go right every so often to reload their faith.
Is religion a delusion?
Barnie2years comments on Jul 4, 2018:
I have a dear friend who is in a really bad situation relationship wise. She is from China and hooked up with a friend of mine on an internet dating site. She is a really fun, active person. She came over here with her teen daughter and married, and for the first couple of years, they had a great time, even though the daughter had emotional issues. She did great in school (very bright) but was not happy with her new step father and life in general, to the point of needing professional help. Then after a couple of years of happiness, he had a serious stroke on a highway miles from medical care. The result is paralysis on his entire right side, and the general mental capacity of a mean three year old! She could have easily ran, she is quite capable of taking care of herself, but she chose to dedicate herself to taking care of him (I might mention that there is a 20 year age difference between them). Anyway, to relate this to the topic, she found a Chinese church here in Lancaster which she started attending I think just for the social aspect of being with people she could communicate in her own language, but found that the idea of an invisible friend and a better afterlife gave her comfort and helped her cope with the daily grind of dealing with her home situation. We kind of stopped talking for a few years because, obviously I am somewhat irreverent, and topics we used to talk about are now off limits. But she contacted me recently for some help and we are talking again. We started a discussion on spirits, since in February I had a heart failure and was technically dead for ten seconds. She told me that she had become a Christian because at some point in her indoctrination she had seen the “spirit” of Jesus, and she believed that all our spirits survive death. We had a very civil conversation, though I pointed out that people can be made to believe they see all kinds of things and wondered where all these spirits are living? But by the same token, given the way she is living, the delusion of rewards in an afterlife for doing the right thing in this one would certainly make it easier to not go completely out of your mind.
I would enjoy seeing a discussion of the following.
Barnie2years comments on Jul 3, 2018:
I started to watch the movie and had to turn it off. I don’t do that with many movies, but the basis of the movie just seemed too realistic, given today’s political climate. It exemplifies the ease with which organized religion and money are able to overcome any sense of morality to preserve their status quo. Enslaving anyone is evil, enslaving women to use as breeding machines for the upper class is just disturbing.
Fellow agnostics, how do you feel about believers joining?
Barnie2years comments on Jul 3, 2018:
Anyone can get on the site. The point system limits what they can do as newbies. And if the turn into trolls or start evangelizing, they can be ejected. If they simply are questioning why we don’t feel the need for faith to live normal, moral and even fulfilling lives, maybe we can sow a seed of questioning into their minds. And certain Agnostics, because they are simply searching for answers, may tend to push you for explanations of why you don’t feel as they do. It should not be an argument, but rather an open forum to ideaology.

How do you refute nature's beauty?
Barnie2years comments on Jul 3, 2018:
Because there are scientific, factual reasons all these things exist. Natural order was here long before mankind and his need for an invisible force ever existed. There were jungles and mountains, sunrises and sunsets, long before there was humankind. Much of our species is just unable to accept the idea that something like us didn’t create the world we live in.
I don't know how to put this.

Talking to a brick wall is not going to make the wall move. You go around it and move on. Talking to a Trump supporter is the same as talking to an Evangelical, they don’t want to hear you, they are not debating facts, just feelings, so no matter what you present gets met with retaliatory bull shit that has no meaning, just mantra.
I noticed that the cover on my ironing board is wrinkled. That’s just weird.

Would you have a wedding with religious aspects incorporated in it?
Barnie2years comments on Jun 29, 2018:
Been there, done that! I put it under the same category as funerals. Given my track record on marriage, the two are pretty much the same to me at this point ?. The key is, if I am getting married to a believer, and I have any expectation of it working out, not only her needs, but those of her family, need to be respected. That said, I would assume that we had already discussed the fact that I would not be showing up at church on Sundays. She would also know that all the scripture reading would have no real meaning to me. Though it is not an issue at this point (I’m 66), the subject of child baptism would have to be ironed out. Again, I am fine with that, since having water sprinkled on you is not going to matter one way or the other to me if you die. And the religious habits of the kids would be a much bigger issue than where we said our vows. So, given all the obstacles in an Atheist/believer marriage, where the ceremony takes place should be a minor one.
I forgot to put my windshield sun shade in place today.

Death. Do you fear it?
Barnie2years comments on Jun 27, 2018:
I don’t fear death. I don’t seek it necessarily, but I accept that it could come at anytime. I have had an interesting life, travelled a lot growing up, had love (even if fleeting), have passed on my DNA to a son and grandchildren, my wisdom (for what it is worth) to a stepson. I feel I have helped more people than I have harmed in my life. So, when it’s time for me to exit, I have no regrets, nothing more I expect to accomplish. A recent heart failure only reminded me to enjoy as much as possible whatever positives I have in my life.

How in the world can you call millionaire Trump who’s closest association with the country is when he hits his golf ball in the rough a country boy? Because his grasp of English grammar is at a fifth grade level? This is a man that studies weakness then figures out the best con to get what he wants, no better than any TV evangelist, even though they actually are smarter than him because they legally don’t pay taxes on their fortunes. But then those same red areas of the country are the biggest contributors to whacky religions, so it makes perfect sense.

Metro man usually refers to males who spend large amounts of time and money on grooming and fashion. If you are a man that goes for skin hydration treatment, manny-pedies, don’t leave home without hair gel, lip baum and high priced designer cloths and shoes, chances are you are a metro man, regardless of where you live.

I am a great believer in the chaos theory. I rarely even question why something went wrong, or right for that matter. If it was something definitely my fault, I deal with it best I can going forward. But as I constantly remind my conservative friends, you can never go backwards. In fact, the rest of my sermon goes, “you can never go back to the past, and you can never predict the future. The only thing you have any control over is how you deal with the present.”
I believe there are people that truly need the dogma and comfort of religion.
Barnie2years comments on Jun 23, 2018:
It's like giving up anything else you become dependant on, especially if you have an addiction problem. It is why so many of the drug and alcohol rehabilitation organizations are religiously oriented. They take you off the drugs and get you addicted to the idea of a greater force. Addicts can become the greatest believers, because once they latch on to something, they get obsessed. The religious like to point at porn addiction, computer game addiction, sex addiction, but they would never point out that religious fundamentalists, evangelicals and radical Islamists are nothing more than religious addicts, being often controlled by whatever leaders they have attached themselves to. Which is what in many ways make them dangerous. They lose the ability to think for themselves. The problem is never going to go away and free thinkers and people who can avoid addiction will always be a minority. And we tend to reproduce much slower than the believers!
Why are you athiest?
Barnie2years comments on Jun 23, 2018:
Because there is nothing in religion that makes even a little sense from a logical standpoint. Prayer is nothing more than wishing, miracles are nothing that can not be called an anomaly. If you can explain to me where heaven and hell are in the known universe, show me a soul leaving a body, maybe we could talk. And every religion has been used for nefarious purposes, for wars, to control the poor and for the benefit of the rich. I lived in Europe growing up, where religion doesn't have the stranglehold it does here in the US. I toured cathedrals where the displays of gold and jewels were dazzling, but questioned why this wealth was not used to feed the poor and heal the sick, rather than decor for ornate ceremony that did nothing to actually help anyone, other than give the bishops and pope luxury lifestyles. And those are just some of the reasons I am an Atheist. LOL
Hey there, I have been an atheist since forever, no religion growing up to speak of.
Barnie2years comments on Jun 23, 2018:
If there is one downside to being Atheist or a non-believer, it is the lack of community and networking. For many, the community and social aspect of their church is just as if not important than the actual belief. Atheist have no meeting places, social clubs or organized activities, especially if you are outside a larger metropolitan area. Where you live, you surely feel very alone, especially as a widow, without a support group. I am not too far away, but I know it is difficult to meet new people if you don't hang out at bars or belong to some kind of club. I do belong to a motorcycle club, but even there it is hard to meet anyone who is not religious. My lack of belief has scared a few people away. We are friendly with each other at the breakfasts and get togethers, but we don't have much to talk about outside of that. If you would like to chat, feel free to contact me. I am not much of a camper or outdoorsman, but I am open minded and talk too much, a pretty good listener too. And I have a cute dog! LOL

Thanks! I was starting to think it was just me.. I have been alone for around ten years, almost dateless for the past two or three. Sex, forget about it! The few dates I've actually been on were one or two and done. I've come to the conclusion that I am going to be alone the rest of my life. I have friends, mostly female, but not dating. They call when they need my help with something, occasionally offer a meal. But either they are not people I would want to have a relationship with, people I had a relationship with that ended, or they have no interest in pursuing a relationship with me. Other than the total lack of a sex life, my puppy I got two years ago seems to fill a lot of the hole in my heart. I have never given up hope of meeting someone, but I sure have tampered my expectations. I don't hang out in bars, join clubs or spend much time in crowds, I think I have a little crowd phobia. Had some hopes when I found this site, but so far that hasn't been successful either.

Wow ?❣ What a wonderful tribute to your father! And in reading it, brought back memories of my own father; executive, self made man, we moved on a regular basis (never lived in one house or country, more than three years growing up). His home office was always present. I never followed in his footsteps, but then he was quite accepting of my sister and my differences from him. Thank you for sharing, it made me laugh and made my eyes dampen as well. It sounds like your Dad was quite a man!

They returned a few last year and are working on returning more this year. Sadly, the bodies buried under some of the tombstones are not the ones on the marker. If you dehumanize people, I guess there would be no need to respect their final resting place. Separating children from their parents is obviously not a new thing either, as long as they are "the other people." It was done with the Jews in Germany, the native Americans in this country and is still being done by the Boco Haram in Nigeria. It is the ultimate in mistreatment and a sure sign of the moral decay. And interestingly enough, quite popular with religious groups.

They are taking pages from Nazi documents to justify the elimination of Jews and applying it to people fleeing their countries to save their children. There is nothing new here, just putting a new twist on an old scapegoat. When your government is slimier than a greased pig, you need to create evil boogeyman (or in this case children) to distract the easily swayed from what is really your intentions.
