Its nice to see that there are some pretty smart people out there.
THE AFTERLIFE SALAD BAR IS OPEN! All religions offer their believers an afterlife.
Benthoven comments on Aug 9, 2018:
Actually, Christianity does make some references to reincarnation. John the Baptist was thought to be Elijah... In John 9, the story of the blind man coming to Jesus to be healed, his apostles ask: "Who sinned, the man or his parents that he was born blind..." suggesting he was suffering for some past wrongs. Again, in the book of John, Jesus talks about his 'father's house' and many mansions. This COULD be a reference to the idea of various "astral planes" sometimes taught in the more extreme religions such as Zoroastrianism. Hell, Jesus himself is an 'incarnation' of God. Plato believed in an immortal soul that frequently incarnated, so those ideas were not new to the early Christians. What has likely happened is that at some point before the New Testament was canonized during the Second Council of Trullan of 692 the books were scrubbed to remove all traces of the idea.
I doubt if anyone here is surprised ...

Benthoven comments on Aug 9, 2018:
My brother-in-law, a marine, was working a flight from Stewart Air Force Base, New York, to Cherry Point, North Carolina, then to California, and finally to Yuma... His friend and co worker had been trying to get a spot on that plane... At first there wasn't an opening... Then a seat opened up, but his wife had to go out of town and he couldn't get baby sitting. Finally, at the last minute, it was looking like he could make it. But then they had to make room for more cargo... So he could not make the flight. That was Monday morning, 10 July, 2017. At five in the afternoon, that KC-130 blew apart over Mississippi and all sixteen men, 15 Marines and one Navy (including my brother-in-law) were lost to history. I tell that story often, because it intrigues me. I remember him standing in my sister's kitchen talking shortly after the accident saying, "It should have been me..." But my only response was, "No it shouldn't have. You tried... something kept you off that plane." I don't call it god, I don't call it providence... I don't even call it coincidence... I don't know what it was, but he's still among us... and I'm grateful. I miss the hell out of Brendan, but when I see him I'm grateful for his family that he's still with them. And I give thanks... to what I do not know. I just generically call it the "universe." Even while I'd like to kick the Universe's ass for what it did to Brendan.

Benthoven comments on Aug 7, 2018:
The "God" thing is complicated. We've been steeped in as a species for tens of thousands of years (and even more), and so it has become ubiquitous in our way of thinking. It's like water to a fish. I suspect that until we find another "story" to replace the ones having been told since we became conscious, we'll be playing god for generations yet to come.

Does being an atheist automatically mean you are a liberal? If not what do you identify with?
Benthoven comments on Aug 6, 2018:
I don't think it makes you 'liberal,' but I do think it's going to make you more fact-based. After all, the reason people become atheists is they can no longer justify a belief that seems to have no data to back it up. I've met Conservative atheists, but that was years ago. Today's Conservative has abandoned facts and data, joined conspiracy theory, and supports fascism and the destruction of the America our Founding Fathers built. I think they call themselves atheists in an effort to pretend they have some cred... but when questioned at any level, it suddenly becomes obvious they're no more atheist than Franklin Graham.
Just a thought, people.

Benthoven comments on Aug 6, 2018:
I can't speak for the other post, but I see this thing in our culture where we don't need anybody. I hear people say, "I just need to love me..." But I don't think it can work that way. I think we learn to love others by loving ourselves, and we learn to love ourselves by loving others. I know it's a crazy generality, but I think that inside of that are ways of bonding ourselves to each other in healthy ways. We need each other on just about every level. We need a military looking out for our best interest, we need regulators making sure our food is safe, we need distributors getting our dinner to the grocery store. We need friends who can see into our blind spots and helps us become better people. As to beating someone up because they value independence, that may very well be the reason they feel they need that independence. We should be good to each other, even when we disagree.

Herod the Great died in 4 B.C.E., in Jericoh, and for the last year was in extreme pain and pretty much lost his mind. So the "Massacre of the Innocents" would have had to have taken place in either 6 or 5... since Herod had boys two and under killed. Only Matthew and Luke put Jesus in Bethlehem, and only Matthew sends his family to Egypt. Mark has him born in Galilee, and John skips right over his birth... As to the claims of the Galilean peasant, it's important to understand that he never made any of those claims. The earliest of the Gospels were written after the destruction of the Temple, meaning that Paul had already canvased the Mediterranean with his Hellenized "Christ" based on a guy he knew nothing about.

I do not believe in God, but I believe we should treat life as a precious gift.
Benthoven comments on Aug 4, 2018:
I hear people say that often, "life is a gift..." But I don't necessarily agree. The insanity, the craziness, the agony, the suffering... these are not gifts. My life was chosen for me. I had no input. But now that I'm hear, I'm left dealing with the morass that comes with life, knowing that there's but one way out... and that also is not a choice for me. Those I love are leaving me way before their time. Those who do great good in the world seem to die young, while those who do great evil live extraordinary long lives. Innocent children are born and subjected to monstrous abusive parents... Of all creatures on earth, it's not the "creature" that life pushes on, it's the species. Life pays little attention to the individual. I do not see the gift. Life has this need to propagate itself, and nothing more.

Benthoven comments on Aug 2, 2018:
I've said often: "The reason I hate Republicans is they force me to vote for Democrats." I'm comfortable calling myself "Liberal," but that doesn't make me a Democrat. I also like the term progressive, though there are aspects of that which don't necessarily define my philosophy either. But I will say this: "The Republican Party as it has become today, holds almost nothing for me." They've abandoned reason, embraced conspiracy, turned reality into "fake news" and vilified education and knowledge. That frightens me... It kind of reminds me of another time in history when religion had this much power... They call it the Dark Ages.

Importance of Religion/Lack Thereof in Daily Life?
Benthoven comments on Aug 2, 2018:
Most of those things are running through our culture, and are the bulk of our subconscious reasoning, so they're there in ways we'll never really know. They're pervasive throughout our civil and legal strictures. The parts that we actually 'talk about,' are really just the ten percent that we're aware of. That number may change as we go, but we've been marinating in this stuff for tens of thousands of years.
One choice! IF THERE'S ONE thing in your life that you could change what would it be?

People will respect you if you respect them? True or false?
Benthoven comments on Aug 2, 2018:
People will do what they're going to do and we have less influence on that than we think. The trick is, that we try to act respectfully, because it's the right thing to do, and become masterfully adept at dealing with others who simply won't care about how they treat others.

Think of evil like Donald Trump... He's mean, petty, vindictive, spiteful, viscous, belligerent... and his best friend today becomes his enemy tomorrow over something that stronger people wouldn't even worry about. Evil is egocentric, and considers "others" as means to get what it wants. To that end, evil doesn't even care about evil.

I like to think of him as alcoholic. Especially in the Old Testament. In the Old Testament, when he's sober, he's loving and kind and fun to be around. But when he's on a bender, it's hell-fire and plagues. In the New Testament, he's sober and working the 12-Steps. However, in Revelation, he's relapsed, and drunker than ever...
