How Does Walmart Feel About The Current Administration?
Benthoven comments on Jul 3, 2018:
Can you imagine Conservatives boycotting Wall*Mart? Seriously. Where else can they take their Rascal Scooters? They'd have to get dressed to go to a regular store.
"Music was better when ugly people were allowed to make it".
Benthoven comments on Jul 3, 2018:
I also think it was better with it wasn't so processed, and when the artists didn't have to have a voice like those on American Idol. The best bands on the planet wouldn't be here if they had to pass our new system for picking music.

Self doubt has killed more dreams than poverty ever will... Starfodder
Benthoven comments on Jul 3, 2018:
I think self-'doubt' is good for us. We should always be challenging ourselves. Socrates is cited as saying, "Know thyself," and I think that's so much better advice than "believe in yourself." Beliefs aren't really reality. "I believe I can fly | I believe I can touch the sky" Then I step of the Empire State building and it's all over... quickly. As a musician, I don't "believe" I'm a good musician, I know my weaknesses, I know my strengths, I know that I hate playing Chopin, but I love learning Beethoven. I know that I hate scales, and that I'm both lazy and sloppy at times. Even if I "believed" in myself, those things would still be true. In fact, I think the irony isn't that we don't "believe" in our selves, it's that we "believe" the opposite of what we want to do. As a writer I don't get writer's block. What I get as a firm belief that what I'm writing doesn't matter, or it's not very good, or I've got nothing relevant to say. Those are beliefs, not doubts. And when I start doubting those beliefs (which I must do all the time) then I can move forward, knowing that these beliefs don't necessarily have to be true. It's "knowing thyself" that helps me stay humble, and know what I'm capable of... and it's doubt that let's me try in the first place.

I really feel like I'm going to drop out of college.
Benthoven comments on Jul 3, 2018:
As someone who's quit on a lot of dreams, you live to regret it, and it can eat you up a little bit--or a lot. Especially if you spend the rest of your life doing something you never wanted to do in the first place. There are a billion reasons that the curriculum isn't tracking with you, and once you figure that out, you'll find it extremely useful. Some people need 'hands on' to get the information. Others need to 'see' the process... There are probably some really great tutorials on YouTube if you know what you're looking for. It was recommended that you work for a dentist--or even volunteer an hour or two. Do you have friends in the class who will sit with you over lunch and chat about the course?
If you were a divine Creator, would you want to be worshiped as the Bible proclaims you should?
Benthoven comments on Jul 1, 2018:

Do you believe in law of attraction?
Benthoven comments on Jun 30, 2018:
I find the Law of Attraction vile--yet another 'blame the victim' ideology. Did you get attacked? Well, you attracted that. Are you having trouble paying rent and about to be throw out of your house? Well, you attracted that. LoA has NO compassion, and in fact, encourages us to avoid those who are suffering. It's just another version of the Evangelical's Prosperity Doctrine... warmed over for New Age groups who no longer believe in the Devil, so call it Ego. Who still believe in God but can't call it that anymore.
Are (atheists, agnostics) still part of the herd mentality ?
Benthoven comments on Jun 30, 2018:
We're still part of the society. We share values and ideals. We have similar societal principles. We are shaped by the society around us. We all share a "herd" mentality, because we all share a herd. It's the 'borg mentality that frightens me.

Is it okay for an atheist to sing sacred music?
Benthoven comments on Jun 28, 2018:
Why not? One of my favorite hymns is: Near to the Heart of God. "There is a place of quiet rest | Near to the heart of God..." To me, this isn't about "God," it's about finding that place in our lives where we can be okay even amid the the struggles of life, and I've had a s$it-ton of those. They bring me hope. Not because of the lyrics per-se, but because the melody is beautiful, and the lyrics suggest that there is a place of peace. As a writer, people ask me all the time, "Where do your ideas come from." The reality is, I don't know. But whatever it is, when I 'surrender' to it, it comes. To me, the Universe is mysterious... I don't understand it, but I don't need to. I simply need to enjoy it.

Why can't red and blue just get along?
Benthoven comments on Jun 28, 2018:
How? What base-line do we have? "Humanity?" If you're Red, only one color matters: white. "Compassion?" Right now Red is separating children from parents and moving them away in the middle of the night. "Science?" Red calls science a fraud strait from the pit of hell. "Facts?" Fake news. We've got to have a base-line, and that does not exist at this point. As long as there is one group of people who vilify data, attack science, promote xenophobia and bigotry, "getting along" isn't really going to happen. It's kind of like asking, "why can't the colon and cancer just get along..." Cancer doesn't get along.

What is The root cause of Conspiracy Thinking?
Benthoven comments on Jun 27, 2018:
I think it's fear. The world is "scary," and I think conspiracy theory thinking still holds that what happens is 'controlled.' In other words, it happens on purpose. The idea of life happening randomly freaks us out, and to that end, Conspiracy theorists insist that there's a reason. The randomness is removed.

Can you be an Atheist/Agnostic and have a Conservative stance?
Benthoven comments on Jun 26, 2018:
I've been reading some of the Conservative boards on this site, and I've come to the conclusion that... it's not about God. It's about reason. I assumed that people were atheist or agnostic because they had a logical bent, and wanted to take the null hypothesis with the lack of evidence. Based on the boards I've been reading, though, I've assumed wrong. These so-called atheist Conservatives still hold on to the same proven lies, defying anyone to "prove" otherwise. They still rally against data and facts when they contradict their narrative, and if you show them otherwise, it's "fake news." The Conservative Party, as it stands now, is really a party of conspiracy theorists. They're persecuted, "liburils" is out to get them, the "truth" is out there (but it only says what I want it to say). They need a strong-man to lead them because the world is so scary. Conspiracy theorists don't necessarily need God anymore. Before Trump they had to hide their racism and bigotry behind Jesus... thanks to Trump, they can hide it behind "fake news." I suspect we're about to see an influx of Conservative "atheists" in the near future. And while they claim they don't believe in "God," they like what god stands for: Nationalism, bigotry, xenophobia, and oppression of the weak. Trump fits that description, so they can "believe" in Trump and no longer need to believe in God.

I once told a friend who was complaining about a series of bad relationships: "Girl, they all have one thing in common... you." It was meant to be funny and we laughed, but I've observed that we tend to project our own stuff onto others, and maybe it's not their loss. Maybe they're just taking care of themselves. Blaming others makes us feel better, but it doesn't make us easier to get along with.

Forgiveness doesn't mean that you accept that person back into your life. Of if you do that you ever trust that person fully again... Forgiveness means you're letting go on your end.
