Have you ever watched the series Supernatural? I've been binge-watching. In season 11 they talk at length about God and his cowardice for running away. And then in the last few episodes of the season, here comes God... as a writer... It's really quite clever. And yes, they get to tell him all the stuff we wish we could tell him.

Beliefs are created in the absence of data. Once we have enough data about a particular issue, we no longer need to believe in that. I don't have to believe that water boils at 212 F, it simply will. As skeptics, we take the null position until there's enough evidence either way... even if it's something we want to be true (which is why we choose to believe in the first place). I think it's those who are willing to believe that are more likely to fall for anything. All you've got to do is appeal to their emotions.

The reason you "believe" this is because there's no evidence to back it up. Once we have evidence, belief is no longer necessary. We don't "believe" the earth is round, the sun is 93 million miles away, it takes oxygen to breathe, water boils at 212 degrees Fahrenheit (giver or take depending on elevation)... those things are. We can see them, we can watch them work, and therefore, no belief necessary. To that end, I am very careful about what I "allow myself" to believe.

I don't know if these are Netflix or not, but I'm currently enjoying Riverdale. I used to read Archie comics growing up, and loved them. This is not that Archie. It's darker, a bit more twisted, but I'm enjoying it. Learning that Archie was sleeping with Mrs. Grundy was really weird, but they made it work. Seeing Jughead as kind a of morose gangster is not where I would expect that character to go either (and knowing that he's play by the same kid who played Ben in Friends is... well... oh god I'm old). Another show that I really enjoy is Mom, starring Allison Janney and Anna Farris. Who knew recovery could be so much fun. And the Goldbergs. Family dysfunction that looks like so much fun from the outside.

I totally believe in UFOS... UNIDENTIFIED flying objects (until they're finally identified). But unidentified does not me alien. it simply means unidentified. We probably are alone. While most scientists believe life probably exists on other planets similar to ours, the challenges of traveling back and forth are pretty significant. We measure distance in light years, and most biological organisms couldn't last a single light year, let alone a dozen or more. It's possible that they could send technology, but the chances that we would understand that technology are a billion to one, even if we could interact with it. And finally, using the bandwagon fallacy, or anecdotes as evidence doesn't necessarily mean anything, since we're going off personal bias and not actual data.

As a man who's dated his share of Christian men, these things don't tend to end well. I wish there was a more gentle way to say that, but there isn't. The best thing you can do is honor her pain. This is not the time to worry about beliefs or even what really happens after someone passes. She's grieving, and the best you can do is be a safe place for her grief. This is her process, and right now, "reality" has completely gone. My brother-in-law was one of the 18 Marines who were killed over Mississippi when their C-130 crashed. I can guarantee you, nothing you can "say" is going to make her feel better. But knowing you're there, and giving her that space, that will make all the difference in the world. And I rephrase... in the face of grief, "reality" takes a back seat. And that's natural. It's how the mind copes with loss.

The best metaphor I can think of is venom... When a snake bites, we immediately do what we can to remove the venom... Tie a tourniquet, get to the hospital, and get some antivenom. Heal. I feel like the emotions caused by people who harm us are the same. This doesn't mean we forget what happened, or that we remain friends with the serpent who bit us, or worse, pretend it didn't happen. Nor does it mean that we don't remove that danger from society if we have that chance. But we remove the poison from our bodies first, so that we can survive. And forgetting is not an option. For the most part, if someone caused enough harm to warrant forgiveness, that event is going to be set pretty hard in the mind where forgetting isn't going to happen. But it doesn't' have to. Once the poison's out, we can think more clearly, and do what needs to be done to take care of ourselves.

I've often done thought experiments where I went back and fixed a mistake, and then tried to imagine what happened as time progressed. I'm not sure that would be a good idea. All emotions are meant to give us feedback. I feel fear, that means there may an imminent threat to my survival or well being. I feel anger and know that my boundaries have been crossed. I feel shame (a supposed negative emotion) I know that I have violated my own values. I fee frustrated, I think that something "can happen," but it isn't happening fast enough or the way I wanted it to happen. When I feel hopelessness (for example, the death of a loved one), that emotion tells me that it's time to move on. It's not coming back. What I would do instead is try to get better acquainted with my emotions, and learn how to use them rather than let them use me.

I have no problem giving spare change to someone even if they're just going to use it for drugs or alcohol. It all depends on how I feel when I approach them. If they're scary or obnoxious or demanding, I'm less inclined to help. When in the midst of a profound struggle such as poverty and homelessness (many of them vets) because of the physical and mental issues that seemed to take over, the fact that they're going to want to hide away from it makes sense. And if they can get the money without having to fob or mug... that's better for everyone. Often as I pass them on the street, I will wonder, "What's their story? What would I think if I were watching a movie starring them?" Ultimately I can never know, but I've got plenty of drama in my own life to draw on to give me an idea of what could have led them there.

I think human interaction is way more than conversation. it's about how we interact even beyond conversation. Some people present themselves as friendly and sincere, usually with their body language, and it's easier to talk to them. Some present themselves as "superior" or better than others, and conversation with them seems almost dangerous (emotionally). One thing I've noticed is that those who make accusations of others, tend to have the exact same issues themselves. Those who find that people are boring, or unintelligent, often fail to realize that those same people my be reacting to them. An angry person is going to notice a lot of angry people around them because they're reacting to that angry person. Ultimately, the greatest thing we can do for each other is let others be who they are at that moment and not worry too much about whether or not they're following our rules. If that means avoid them, then for both of your sakes, do that.

As someone who has spent a lot of time with cults, eventually he's going to stop going on those trips. Right now he's conflicted because he still has part of his own mind and his own thinking. The part of him still capable of rational thought is pushing him to stay connected to at least part of the real world, but that will soon succumb to the cult as he spends more time around them. I would say, don't try to reason with him (the fact that he joined the JWs means that reason isn't really his thang). But I don't think it will help to "disown" him either. Have fun. Use those moments to create a place where he can have fun and not worry about you, or them for as long as you can. Like I said, he'll probably succumb to the cult, but maybe those moments will stay with him and might bring him back to reason... But ultimately, don't fall for his attempts to convert you. He's going to have to try if he's going to fit into his cult. If it gets to be too much, don't be afraid to walk away. There are books about how to deal with people in cults, and I would be happy to recommend some, but it's a challenge. As long as he's in their grip, he becomes "theirs." And please let me say that I'm so sorry. I know that this is hard on you and I acknowledge that. It's okay to grieve a little. Don't let people tell you that it isn't a big deal. It is. Take care of yourself.
