Beowulfsfriend comments on Nov 16, 2018:
Eisenhower was never actually a real Republican. Both parties courted him because he, while in the mitary, had not committed to either one. Factoid: Eisenhower put for a civil rights act that went absolutely no where in Congress; interestingly enough had it passed, it would have been stronger than the one LBJ got installed. Most of us here might be republicans now, and Trump would be the Democrat.

I decided when I left teaching I wouldn't go back after switching and going into social work. Now, I'll stay with social work, but no adjudicated kids. That is too painful to observe: sometimes because the kids put themselves there with their actions and then the worst - those who through no blame of their own were there because they had a shitty or dangerous home life.
How have you handled a crisis or emergency?
Beowulfsfriend comments on Nov 14, 2018:
Family, work, outings (camping, etc) and even the military (including experiencing a ship collision at sea) I always did well, at least until about eight years ago when my psyche gave up for a brief while, but that is not what I want to comment upon, that had multiple layers. Anyway, I was working a volunteer phone line, that also did CRISIS calls late at night before they were full time (early 90's). I got my first suicide call and I, Mr. Calm, panicked. The caller, feeling badly for me, not himself, promised he wouldn't do anything in order to help calm me down. Success at stopping my first suicide.

Beowulfsfriend comments on Nov 13, 2018:
As some others have said, I don't believe the state should decide who to kill. I do believe that there are humans on this Earth that do not deserve to remain here. But, if the state can kill at its discretion what if: what if it decides to kill witches (Saudi Arabia) or drug users (The Philippines) or political prisoners (too large a list) or, in another tact, opts to use executed people's organs for transplant and expedites the executions with less oversight (China). Is that what we want, as a nation. From a financial point, in most states, the imposed oversight actually makes the implementation of the death penalty more costly (court costs, etc) than life imprisonment. Yes, that oversight could be eliminated, but how many statistical errors of innocent people being killed are you willing to accept.

What if a fundamentalist takes the reigns and wants to get rid of witches (like Saudi Arabia) or drug users (like the Philippines or Malaysia), etc.

I hate all censorship. I had a wacko, 11th grade English teacher, daughter of an ahole evangelical minister (He ran an awful retirement home that mistreated and deceived and defrauded the seniors their, and Social Security- I knew this to some extent then, it later came out big time). She blacked out all the "bad" words in One Day in the Life of Ivan Denitsovitch. I got to page 29 and said no more. I refused to read it. (I have since then. Ive even taught it) She agreed I had to read something. As I was constantly reading, I held up a book and said how about this? The book was 3 or 4 times longer, so she agreed and told me to write a report (f'ing book report. Even in 11th grade I knew their worthlessness and wrote about the book's key themes). The book - Catch 22. Try writing about the killing of a prostitute for an evangelical- girlfriend, ha.

History does not do a good job informing people about WWI, at least as it is conventionally taught. Few know the powder keg Europe was then and had been for quite a while. The Spanish American war almost became a world war in the Philippines. And much more. As ArdentAtheist says though, he is correct in that this is a time to remember those who served and did so for the greater good. Not necessarily the best time to argue the reasons behind the multitude of wars. My father served in WWII and few would argue once it started that the many who served, especially for the allies did so to stop some mad men. Yes, in reflection, two other monster dictators stood at the helm of their countries as the war ended: Stalin and Mao. Study that tomorrow; today we need to respect those who served.

In the 60's, the Supreme Court heard a case on education in which, i believe Chicago (a major metropolis) tried to institute paying Catholic school teachers because the city feared the collapse of that system would bring too many students into the public system to handle. The Church sued, fearing oversight (gee, who would have guessed the Catholic hierarchy would be against oversight). Now, with crumbling economic structure to support pubic education; and with the growth of disjointed from reality people wanting to indoctrinate rather than educate - schools find themselves on the cusp of great challenges in order to survive and help produce an educated class. Fels like a failing proposition.

Excellent article, and each point could be studied and expanded upon. When in the Navy, we studied US Naval history and how it overlapped with the world. The German Naval expansion was simply a signed agreement by a number of nations to maintain a non arms race. Britts still had an edge in building according to the agreement. It also included the Japanese. And, most people do not know how close to a world war the Spanish American war came in the battle of the Philippines. Interesting hindsight after the wars and exposed correspondence from that time.

Strauss–Howe generational theory
Beowulfsfriend comments on Nov 10, 2018:
A number of theories that deal with humans, society and time are floating about. We seem to be in an era when certain ones won't be allowed as nation states last longer, are more aggressive toward a new first policy and less concerned about the bulk of humankind. Historically, societies used to forgive debts after each generation (about 60 to 100 years) or due to major conflicts.

Beowulfsfriend comments on Nov 10, 2018:
An intellectual theologian will admit to the lack of proof of any god, and to the need to take a so called leap of faith. I will converse with said people; in fact when I first started teaching I taught at a Catholic school and one fellow I enjoyed conversing with taught religion (in his case, more ethics and centered on Jewish writers from the Holocaust). The reason anyone, especially those who think and logic, would accept a leap of faith differs; and, I have absolutely no idea why an otherwise intelligent person would make that choice. The zombies who follow their religion because they believe it to be god ordained are easier to understand: lacking in intellectual fortitude or understanding or capacity. Then there are those who choose to believe because they think doing so will excuse their lack of moral character.

Beowulfsfriend comments on Nov 10, 2018:
I don't like either poll answer. Time varies by location. It does appear linear, and always moving forward, at least as of yet (no evidence to show anyone or thing can go backward). Now that we know the speed of light can be varied and that gravity affects time (Especially black holes), the question becomes the measurement of time, which is man made and discretionary and going to fluctuate depending where the moving universe is monitored.

Beowulfsfriend comments on Nov 9, 2018:
Yes and no. I eat meat, less than in my younger days mostly for health reasons, and supplement with other proteins. I still eat meat weekly. I don't like the way animals are treated in some places, and when possible choose foods I KNOW are what they say (for those that don't know, example coming, eggs that say free range, by law only need to allow the chickens access to the outdoors. Open a door on a chicken coop which continually supplies food to the chickens who remain indoors and watch how many get up and go outside to scratch for food)
Do you prefer home-ownership or renting?
Beowulfsfriend comments on Nov 9, 2018:
Living alone I have found it more affordable to just rent. And it is also less stressful and has less responsibility. Do a wants and needs assessment of yourself and then compare the outcome to first: house ownership; and then: to renting. I am more Spartan in my wants and needs, so a small apartment fits my needs. When I had a wife and kids it was more comfortable living in a larger place, especially with a big yard and a barn to work in and for the kids a place to play.

I just recently had a conversation with a lady that says God, angels, devil and Higher spiritual ...

Many of the homeless with whom I have sat and talked speak about similar things. A number talk to god, Jesus, or Angels.
I once had a woman tell me that I needed to find Jesus in order to be happy.

I had a teacher tell me once that "One day, You are going to get it." I responded, "from who, your god?" (and, yes, now I know it should have been whom). She threw me out of class before school started and didn't wish to see me the rest of the day. I would have loved, on that day, to have been caught roaming without a pass, for I had pleanty to say to the vice principal.
I attended an exclusive all-boys Catholic high school back in the Philippines.

I was in the Philippines in the late 70's and early 80's in the Navy. The general population of people are great, the food (aside from Balut) is tasty, and the mountains and beaches beautiful. That said, the mix of religion and government is screwier than here. The U.S. Navy offered to build and run a free health clinic, but was turned down because it was feared the clinic would offer birth control.

Catholic and Christian schools, ouch. I taught, at the beginning of my career in a Catholic school. Hooboy. Someday my next novel will have that setting along with other crazy teachers I have known. Nuns- what to say. Have to admit I was never invited back to family class when, answering questions, I said I lived with my wife before marriage.

Is there an abrupt cut off point between health and mental illness?
Beowulfsfriend comments on Nov 6, 2018:
Abrupt no. Both affect each other. Both , easily seen in physical health effects on psyche.
I'll bet that Keith is an Atheist.

I wonder how long Georgians are going to have to wait before we get to vote on legalizing marijuana?
Beowulfsfriend comments on Nov 6, 2018:
I think with Atlanta, you can count on being ahead of Alabama and Mississippi. I could see a group of five or so states doing nothing until the federal government acts.
This would make the world so much better...

As an evangelical minister I spout back scripture to his deaf ears I response to his B.S. puts out bibly quotes to support his racist banter against migrants etc. He didn't have a counter to the Leviticus part that says to welcome a stranger like one of your own. Etc.
