Always be polite. A couple of months ago, weather canceled flights the day before, leaving few seats for people like me flying standby. A couple in front of me were very demanding and pretty assholed to say the least. They weren't happy as they walked away, knowing they were going to have to wait at least two more flights. Of course I was absolutely polite and questioned other options (it may have helped that my daughter worked for the airline - although she had no authority at all), and the woman looked at alternative flights, finally sending me from Philadelphia to Cincinnati to Chicago. I definitely got to Chicago faster than that couple who had to go straight there.
