I was raised in a religious family. I was brainwashed to listen to church authorities and blindly accept and obey whatever they said. But I studied the scriptures in order to help me convert thinking people, and discovered that the prophets were false, the scriptures were full of contradictions, and many scriptural stories were scientifically unsound. For years I studied both sides of the issue -- the religious side and the scientific side of the argument. The evidence pointed toward atheism. There are no gods. Religion is a scam based on mythology. I am happy to be free from such a scam.

In my late 20's I decided to study my religion (Moronism) in detail, so I could convert my thinking friends. As it turned out, I discovered that the founding prophet of Moronism, Joseph Smith, made prophecies that did not come true. He was a false prophet. So, I asked the local church leader for help in sorting this out. As a result, I was excommunicated for apostasy. (Morons are supposed to listen to their leaders and blindly obey -- no thinking allowed.) This excommunication was the best thing the Morons ever did for me. Then I went from one Xian church to another, looking for truth, but I also researched the Bible and discovered that the prophets therein were also false prophets. I also found many contradictions in the Bible, and stories that were scientifically unsound. So, I left religion altogether, proclaiming it to be a scam based on mythology. I could find no cogent evidence for the existence of gods, so I became an atheist.

I'd say it has to do with how much research a person does. An agnostic has not done enough research to become an atheist. An atheist has done too much research to be an agnostic. I, for example, have spent years looking for evidence on both sides of the issue -- the religious side and the anti-religious side. I have found no convincing evidence supporting religion, and much evidence in favor of atheism. Therefore, I am an atheist. I do admit the possibility (not a probability) that I have missed some research that could turn me back toward religion. But until such evidence comes to my attention, I remain an atheist. Whenever a missionary approaches me, I ask for evidence for what they are preaching. So far, nobody has been able to show me enough evidence to turn me away from atheism. In fact, this tactic causes missionaries to tire of me and abandon me, which is most often a good riddance. :)

Just in case you might possibly have forgotten; we are god damn lucky to be here.

I have seen enough evidence to conclude that religion is a scam based on mythology. I have also sought evidence that might confirm religion, but I have always found a lack of evidence and arguments that are illogical. Therefore, I am sure enough that religion is false to call myself an atheist rather than an agnostic. However, the skeptical nature of my mind admits the possibility (not probability) that I may have missed some evidence that might convince me that there is some truth in religion. But until such evidence comes to my attention, I remain an atheist. I do admit that religion has some good in it. Fellowship is good. Morality is good, though religions tend to base morality on blind faith rather than good ethics. Many churches have wonderful architecture, music and other arts. Charitable activities are good. But all these good things can be had without religion, and are even better without religion. This is my intellectually honest position, and I am an atheist.

Oh I so hope this is all true and that the US treasury throws the book at the LDS Mormon Church ...

I am skeptical enough, though, to admit the possibility (not probability) that I have missed some evidence in favor of gods as real beings. Whenever a missionary approaches me, I ask for evidence. Yes. We do recover. It took me a few years, but now I have done enough study to know that the Bible stories are mythological, and that churches are scams, always asking for money. I am now completely free from religion, without any anger issues, and have developed my own code of ethics, including the concepts that we are free to choose whom we love, and that faith (acceptance of an idea without evidence) is a trap set by scam artists. I wish you the best in reaching a full recovery. :)

I have studied the Bible enough to conclude that the prophets were false prophets (they did not consistently predict the future in an accurate way), and that the Bible is full of contradictions and scientifically untenable stories. My conclusion is that the Bible is mythological, and religion is a scam (they're always asking for money). If you do your own study with a scientific mind, you will come to the same conclusion. This will free you from religion, and you can live a life based on your own ethics, without compromising your conscience. I wish you the best. :)

My transformation was due to intellect. I tried to prove my religion true in order to make converts. Instead, I found evidence that the prophets were false (unable to predict the future with a superhuman degree of accuracy), and the scriptures were false (full of contradictions and unscientific myths). I dislike religion because it is a scam for getting money from vulnerable people. They teach mythology as if it were reality. They are deceitful and harmful, full of hypocrisy. On the other hand, there are some good things about churches -- fellowship and charitable activities, for example. But such good things can be found outside of a religious context, too. Nonreligious people can also find peace and solace, and it is better than religious "peace and solace" because it is based on reality, and not lies. In conclusion, religion does some good, but they do it by scaring people with their false teachings. I prefer honesty, ethics and doing good for others, based on reality. I am much happier as an atheist than I ever was as a religious person. And to clarify a point: When I say I dislike religion, that does not mean that I hate the people involved in it. I pity them, but I do not dislike them.
