What made you change from believer to non-believer?
Budgie comments on Nov 25, 2019:
When I watched my world going to hell in a hand basket, when as a good little child I prayed and prayed for the starving in Africa to be helped so that the children had what they needed. Then I became a teenager and started to think why does all of this bad happen, if he is omnipotent why does he allow this to happen why am I following this rubbish.
Are Believers Better Citizens?
Budgie comments on Nov 25, 2019:
Given that the prisons are full of xtians and not atheist I am guess not. "We have this statistic thanks to a 2013 report released by the United States Federal Bureau of Prisons obtained by blogger Hemant Mehta. The report looks at all the federally run prisons in the U.S. — that makes up about 218,000 prisoners — and the inmates’ religious affiliations. When they say that less than one percent identify as atheist, they actually mean 0.07 percent. That’s right, 0.07 percent. That is way less than one percent." https://www.alternet.org/2014/03/why-atheists-make-85-percent-americas-scientists-and-07-percent-its-prison/
Do you agnostics decorate for Christmas?
Budgie comments on Nov 25, 2019:
Atheist Yup but it is about the traditions of our family that connect me to them, I have the decorations from our tree when I was a child with my parents both dead it is a connection to them as I carefully put on the decorations, I hang apples in honour of Sir Issac Newton suns for the winter solstice and lights Dr Who lights and more lights and some more lights because I loves the twinkly lights. Did I mention the lights?

I was writing posts on Facebook disparaging the government and putting public links to contact government officials, and was told by some people that I should not speak out like that or I could end up under surveillance. i pointed out that if I was quiet because of some possible risk then the government had already won. You have to speak out and I am all for boycotting a company if they are not doing the right thing.

Budgie comments on Nov 22, 2019:
I have two IBCs just have to get someone to help me with the technical aspects and get it set up to a garden. The idea is to have something like you have there on the top with herbs, salad greens, that need a lot of water up here, in them able to put their roots into the water. Then fish in the water to produce fertilizer and the water runs through the garden bed for hardier vegetables to use before being pumped back to the fish all filtered. Takes a bit of set up but hopefully with my brother's help we will manage it this wet season (easiest time to dig the ground to put in the plumbing)

For me it is a case of the men in power thought, "I can not answer that, there is no answer for that," and so went unknowable, unfathomable do not question, blind obedience obey obey etc. It is all a load of made up rubbish. If there is a sky fairy out there then it is malicious, vindictive and nasty not something I would want to put my faith in.
Can you love a racist?
Budgie comments on Nov 20, 2019:
Yes it is possible to have respect and love for a parent who you can recognise is still carrying the values they were raised with and not questioning them. My father that I loved and adored for all of his good traits was born and brought up in a vastly different world, he was sent to catholic schools and went to church, he did not agree with homosexuality, he was a racist. These are all products of the time he was raised in the fact that he did not question his upbringing and was supported in this by his wife (not my mother) who was also raised the same. She is much worse and her I ignore. I would point out that what he was saying was racist (mainly jokes) and not funny. But like Matthew I would tell him I loved him. It did not help that my father started to develop dementia and was then no longer able to think clearly about issues and with the nasty wife he had he spouted her hatred/ intolerance of people. I think you are in a tough place and will need to play it by ear as to how you respond to him and if or when he meets your children.

Hi everyone! I have never given a car of mine a name have you? What is it?
Budgie comments on Nov 18, 2019:
A couple of my cars have had names one was You Bastard (always broke down at inconvenient times but then the moment a friend who was a mechanic turned up started and purred like a kitten at him) He was replaced with Amadeus Wolfgang Mozart (who was going to run like a well tuned instrument I had learnt my lesson, also the first brand new never been used car that I bought) Referred to a Amadeus unless it was a formal occasion. Beautiful car that ran fantastically until the rust did him in. Since then none of them had had the right personality for a name the current one seems to be Stupid Car which I had to get as my other was going to cost more than it was worth to fix and there was no guarantee that something else major would not go wrong. It beeps at me all the time and I hate that, I have a 50m drive and a gate to open and shut before leaving I am not putting my seatbelt on I don't care how much it beeps at me I just turn up the radio and sing real loud. Honestly new cars and their stupid safety devices.

Budgie comments on Nov 15, 2019:
I am a teacher and a parent came in one morning, told me she and some of the other mothers had been talking about me, (I braced this as going to be interesting, did they not like the way I was teaching, had I somehow overstepped some boundary they felt I should respect, they were mainly army wives) and they wondered if I "batted for the other team." I looked at her confused and said, "I don't play sport." Then my brain kicked in was not expecting to be asked if I was gay. I simply said that my sexuality was no one business but mine and surely they have better things to discuss. I was stunned they felt they could ask that.

Budgie comments on Nov 15, 2019:
I remember reading something about the whole birth of jesus thing where some historians tried to work it out. This link is to a religious site but they have done a bit of the work to determine when it is most likely he was born. https://www.ucg.org/the-good-news/biblical-evidence-shows-jesus-christ-wasnt-born-on-dec-25 Given as others have said that only the people of Palestine who were going back to their place of birth and some noted the distance which would only have taken a week at most even on foot to cover given the average person could walk about 20 miles a day easily, I know I did a ten mile walk as a child. People must have moved around even then for joe to have meet mary. However we are basing all of this on a poorly written text that had multiple authors over many years and has been translated from the original by people who wanted it to suit their own views at the time.

I had a friend who believed in a god (brought up catholic never kicked the habit) he was a great person and during one of our discussions we ended up with me getting my own personal god as he said I could not say god dammit if I didn't believe so I started using his name instead given it was Rob it made it easy to substitute. If he was around and I said god he responded with a yes what can I do for you today. I think I swear ie JFC just because some people consider it to be so wrong and that makes the swearing better.

Budgie comments on Nov 14, 2019:
1. I would ask them why it matters. Why they feel only an xtian can meet their needs. Ask them how they would feel if you asked them and refused to deal with them because they were xtian. Find a few quotes about acceptance and charity from the bible and quote that at them asking them if they believe and follow the bible. I would not lie but I am not in your situation. 2. I would ask them why they talk about god a lot and tell them that I don't believe, they will either accept you for who you are, try to "save you" or walk away. I have done this and they walked but better to know up front rather than later. Good luck either way.

Budgie comments on Nov 5, 2019:
As a primary school teacher I taught about dinosaurs because all of the students were interested in them. Only had two problems one in a pre-school when a parent instructed me not to say that dinosaurs existed millions of years ago because her cult did not believe that. I told her that term is a bit irrelevant to pre-schoolers who were struggling with counting to 10, and that I tell them a long time ago. My aide went to the same cult and when a child asked me how long I proudly said millions of years. Never heard from the parent about it. Second was when a teacher had to cover my class as I had a meeting and she wrote me a note telling me how uncomfortable she was teaching the lesson as there was another side to this. (I went over my notes and could not find anything confronting as it was a class of 7,8 and 9 year olds) wondered what she was on about then the cult magazines rocked up in my pigeon hole. I carefully arranged them in the bin so she could she I had thrown them out. I left her a note telling her she could believe what she liked but not to put that stuff in my pigeon hole. She never spoke to me again.
Welcome to new members. What's you favorite Film, Book or Show?
Budgie comments on Nov 5, 2019:
I grew up on Blake's 7, Dr Who, Catweazel, The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings in Primary School our teacher read us The Weirdstone of Brisingamen. I pretty much love it all. My favourites would be Babylon 5, Firefly, Warehouse 13, Dark Matter, Almost Human, (there sort of is a trend of me liking something and it getting cancelled) As far as books go, The Pern series, SirPterry's Discworld, Sheri S Tepper, Raymond E Feist, Jim Butcher, Tanith Lee, that said I think I need to go back and reread some of them as I am having trouble remembering who wrote what. I do go to Australian Conventions when I can afford it, as I have to fly pretty much halfway if not all the way across the country, book a hotel, pay for taxis/transport and food (more expensive to eat out than to eat at home) a single weekend can cost me over $2000 not to mention the time off work without pay. I love meeting the Actor, Writers etc and hearing them talk about what motivates them. Some times you come away with a new found respect for them some you decide to love the character they play and their performance but know that their personality is not what you hoped for. There is always a danger in meeting your heroes. While I have never met a nasty one some were just a little more preoccupied with themselves than I was hoping for. Some are a blast, John Barrowman is so naughty and wonderful. I will forever treasure being able to meet Stan Lee and Ron Glass. Cary Elwes is such a generous and giving person he came down from the stage and shook the hands of the people in the audience (about 50 of us) and thanked us for coming to listen to him.
How would you respond to "You can't have true love without God"?
Budgie comments on Nov 5, 2019:
Firstly can I say I feel for your situation having never had the problem of having to pretend to believe. My response would probably be to point out to the all the horrific things done in the name of a god, all of the passages in the bible that talk about doing horrific things to people and ask them how they could love if they believe in a god.

We don't seem to have a lot of atheist science fiction and fantasy fans, I wonder why?
Budgie comments on Nov 4, 2019:
I am a huge fan of Sci fi and Fantasy. My favourite show is Babylon 5 but I grew up watching Blake's 7 with my mother, love Firefly, when it comes to Fantasy The Late Great SirPterry wins all the prizes but also like Tolkien, Raymond E Fiest. I was reading one of his books on a train in England and the other passengers were watching me as I could see the fate of my favourite character I knew he was going to die and I was getting more and more angry shouting at the book and when he died I slammed it shut and threw it on the floor, then I remembered where I was. I looked at them and said, "He just killed my favourite character." and quietly sunk into my seat for the remainder of the trip.

I know someone in the safety industry. The Hivis for daytime wear should not have the reflective band on it just be the bright stand out colour. The one with the reflective band is for nighttime. The band is made from beads of glass so it will get hot if worn in the sun. Not saying that OH&S has not gotten crazy just pointing out something I was told when I commented about the incident.
