Last May my family was in Memphis and visited the grounds of the Civil Rights Museum, which is in the converted Lorraine Motel, the room where Dr King was staying and the balcony where he last stood is there, as well as the warehouse across the street from where the assassin fired and took that great man from all of us. The public can also access that area, though I do not know why someone would desire that vantage point. (Well, I can imagine some people in our society getting a perverse thrill out of that.) It was unnerving enough for me to just be in the same space. Especially looking up at people looking down at that balcony from an observation window. Not that I believe in places being haunted, by any means, or even of an event tainting a place. I've felt the same type of emotions in Ford's Theater as well as the small bedroom where Lincoln died. The Andersonville prison in GA where so many Civil War prisoners died of exposure and starvation and disease in an extremely over crowed open stockade. Plenty of places I have visited in my life like this affect me deeply. And just as an aside, we were in Memphis because my Nephew received his Doctorate and is working at St. Jude's at the moment. We got to have a mini family reunion. His dad and mom, my two sisters and one of their husbands as well. My nephew had months before married his long time sweetheart and they won a bid on a beautiful home while we were there. So much to celebrate. The house they had been renting had raccoons living above the ceiling. eww We didn't get to tour the museum because it was nearly closing time before we got there, but I would love to see it again someday.
