As society (and atheists) ask 2 questions, commonly referred to reductively as "The Golden Rule":

  1. Does it benefit or harm the individual?
  2. Does it benefit or harm the community.
    These are subjective standards, but over time we are able to look back and assess the effects of certain actions in order to determine their benefit or harm, which in turn leads to laws being created to manage, mitigate or prevent that potential harm.
    For instance, murder can be seen to harm both the individual and the community, therefore we have a law against it. This has been objectively observed.
    However we still require judges to interpret them because even this is a subjective process.
