This is the first thing they need to address with "welfare" reform! They are discouraging people from trying to get independent!! If anything, they should get to keep their benefits for an extra week or 2 while transitioning. Likewise, a long time ago I was out of work & had NO income at all. But when I applied for some help & learned I had $200 in the bank for next month's rent they said I didn't qualify. I asked them, seriously, if I took it out & spent it all on booze that night, could I qualify for the help tomorrow, & they said yes.... & the possible benefit I was applying for would not have been enough for the rent then. So basically, let the person end up homeless & then spend even more money on them, or encourage poor folks to save a little money & keep them in their homes.

Yes, they always flush before I throw the paper in so I have to flush again--what a waste of money! Another thing--when my daughter was a newly toilet trained toddler, the toilets would totally scare her & she'd refuse to use them, with the expected results.... I figured out that you can "blindfold" the stupid things with a simple piece of toilet paper over their little glass eyes. They won't flush until you remove it.

I'm half Dutch & spent many Xmases in the Netherlands with my grandparents & family. One cool thing about it back then (I've been told it's changed a bit) is that Dec. 25th was mainly a religious holiday & not all that exciting, though they still had the tree up & had a nice meal & all. But the gift giving & all that happened much earlier--Dec 5th! I believe that may be the catholic saint day of Saint Nicholas...not sure. Anyway he's called Sinterklaas there & he rides a horse, very dignified in a red bishops robe & hat. No fat & jolly guy dropping down the chimney. He is accompanied by his servant, Swarte Piet (Black Pete) & arrives by boat from Spain to give the kids gifts. The night of December 4th we had to polish our shoes very well & put them out, along with an apple for his horse. If he saw that the shoes were nicely polished he'd fill them with candy, or maybe Black Pete did that--not sure. & there would be gifts under the tree, which was decorated with candles on little metal clips. I have some of those & they are lovely burning on the tree but tend to freak people out here in the US. The best thing about those Xmases is that when we returned home we'd still have American Xmas--what kid wouldn't want Xmas to come twice every year?? We do celebrate Sinterklaas Day at our house & I got wooden shoes for the kids to use to make it more "Dutch." Then they get to open ONE small gift from under the candle lit tree, & they usually want me to sing the 2 Dutch Xmas songs that I know. Now that I'm divorcing I'm especially glad that our family already celebrates 2 Xmases.
