Some animal species or groups have rituals that seem to have no practical meaning. Could they be religious, or at least spiritual? How can we know? To my cynical mind at least, modern humans have religion for 2 main reasons--to assuage the fear of death, & to control behavior. In some "primitive" societies, religious rituals seemed to be aimed at attempting to control nature--bribing the gods for good weather, good harvests, successful hunting or the like. Some of those things might be a major concern for some species....

Wow that's an interesting thing to consider! A post a few days ago here got me thinking about how religions seem to have sort of a built in way to organize charitable efforts, like food drives or even international aid--I was wondering how we unbelievers could channel & organize our desire to help others without the undercurrent of pushing religious beliefs on recipients. Seems like in most non-profits I've been involved with there's plenty of in-fighting, politics, & what not, often to the point where I don't want to be involved anymore. La Leche League has been a huge exception which is one of the reasons I'm still involved though my kids are long weaned. So I'm wondering if trying to organize a bunch of intelligent, independently minded people would end badly, or if we really are smart & rational enough to figure out how to get along, agree on priorities & rules, focus on mutual goals & the integrity of the organization.

Yes, it's a fact. I took an online religion test. In the end it broke down all the results by religion (including atheist) & we won by a landslide. I wonder, since it is a hard decision to make when religiosity is the norm, if we do a lot of research & questioning before coming to it. More so than if someone decided to change from Baptist to Methodist, for example. Perhaps even more than going from non-belief to belief, since that would seem to me to be a decision based on feelings, not knowledge.

Began to see through the BS in 2nd grade, but I remember it still upset me that god was watching me go to the bathroom in 5th grade (They said he was always watching us, right?) By 8th grade I was pretty sure no one was there & within a year or 2 identified as atheist.

Yes, I've been studying plants all my life & know the edible ones. I also have chickens & goats. Would they count? I don't eat meat so getting enough calories in the long run could be an issue. One thing I've never done is grind acorns into meal & soak the tannins out to make them edible...that was the staple of the Native Americans in my area.

Individuals need to agree on finances before they get married, but I do think a good father will want his kids to be breastfed & be willing to make most of the for the first 2 years of their lives. & if the marriage ends they still need to help support their kids--they are divorcing their kids' mom, not their kids. Myself, I don't think I'd feel comfortable being entirely financially dependent on someone else.
