I'm nerdulent, and I'm basically just looking for a fellow nerd who likes indoors and outdoors equally. Basically.
I'm interested in descriptive bios
Talents and Hobbies
In general, I tend to fixate on one particular thing until I burn myself out on it (usually if I plateau), but if I meet people that like something I used to do, I can get back into it. I would love to meet someone who wants to experience new hobbies and skillbuild with me. Here are some biggies:
-Disk Golf (my current obsession)
-Sculpture (Sculpey is my go-to material)
-Boating/Kayaking
-Unicycling
-Whistling/Singing (habitually, all the time)
-Musical Instruments (clarinet, ukulele, irish whistle, violin, other assorted)
-Hiking
-DIY ("never buy what you can make" -my mom)
I can get into any kind of music, as long as it has a well-constructed melody. I find it very hard to get into lyrics without that. For that reason, some of my least favorite genres are jazz and metal, though jazz performed live is neat and I love metal with an orchestral backing where they actually sing, like Nightwish. Screamo is awful: comes from loving to sing, sorry. You'll often catch me listening to sweet movie/show/game soundtracks or something unusual like the Bulgarian choir. Some favorite artists:
-Regina Spektor (mah furv)
-I Fight Dragons
-Nightwish
-Harry Belafonte (Daaaaay oh!)
-Mark Knopfler
-Imogen Heap
-Trout Fishing in America
-Tom Lehrer (Singable, AND hilarious!)
Other Pastimes
I like video games and board/pen-and-paper games equally. I'm big on things like deckbuilders, where you basically have to craft your own weapon. Not a huge fan of fighting or racing games; I like taking on the role of someone else, like in an RPG or action/adventure games. Dungeons and Dragons is great, and often side-splitting hilarious.
I love movies/shows with good pacing, plot, and characters that develop realistically in their environment. Any genre though. Long action sequences are boring. I'm usually hesitant with documentaries, then end up loving them. I'm a huge fan of animation (was an art student). Movies/shows where characters behave unrealistically for the sake of drama are like poison to me. Big five movies/shows:
-How To Train Your Dragon (I could go on. Ask me)
-Avatar: The Last Airbender
-Castle In The Sky
-Blast From the Past (Loved the concept! No, I'm not afraid of rom-coms)
-The Iron Giant
My Livelihood
I'm a code monkey by nature. I love figuring things out, and every day of coding is like a logic puzzle. Plus, in world where people seem to hate being rational, it's really nice to have a place where I can say "Ahhhh, this stuff actually makes sense".
Almost all of my spending money gets invested. The idea that I could be a millionaire by the time I retire is pretty sweet. I find it easier for me to spend on others than to spend it on myself. I still buy stuff I like, but I definitely tend not to make whimsical purchases. It pains me to see people struggle to get by, but absolutely have to have the latest phone or the hottest car.
Values
I believe in being self-aware. The ability to step outside of oneself and recognize that other people are fighting the same battles, have the same fears, believe themselves to be the best, or to be right about everything....it's truly a humbling experience. The takeaway from that, in my opinion, would be that we should recognize that on some level, we're probably equal with those around us. We should work on finding these common grounds, rather than constantly looking for things to argue about. I don't believe that "no one is better than anyone else". Obviously I have a gauge, otherwise I would have no way of "bettering" myself. I just also recognize that other people have their own gauges.
If I have a superpower, it's the "reality check". It lets me take a step back from my thoughts and say "hold on, does this make sense? Does this logic still work if we change the variables?" I do it to other people too, though. Bad logic brings out my sarcastic side, which is actually something my close friends like about me. We get a laugh.
The people I tend to get along with:
-Are honest with others, but most of all with themselves.
-Have reasons for their values, not excuses.
-Love to communicate, and believe in doing it well!
-At least understand the value of not acting emotionally, even if it isn't easy.
-Value wisdom over sheer knowledge
Don't be afraid to message me. I'm nice to nice people
I tend to jump hobbies a lot, but lately it's been the sport of disc golf. I found a tree that's not quite big enough for my bag to fit through, and got hung up for a bit.
