I'm at my mother's death bed, and I'm politely having to keep my mouth shut.
DharmaBum50 comments on Oct 2, 2019:
As my wife was dying, I had to sit through all the Catholic last rites hocus-pocus. When she did eventually die, I just wanted to sit with the body for a while in silence, but then my best friend (a New Ager like your wife) wanted to perform a ritual similar to the one you described. My mother-in-law got all up in arms about it, and I told her, "Why not? It's not any more ridiculous than the Catholic bullshit." Didn't help family relations, I don't guess, but my tolerance for that kind of stuff is limited. Sorry you had to go through it, too.
Yes... just imagine!

DharmaBum50 comments on Oct 2, 2019:
Underlying all this is tRump's disdain for and irritation at “the laws the way they are," as he puts it towards the end of the article. What he means is that they are inconvenient and something to be circumvented, and this was all entirely predictable not only for his fascist agenda but also for his status as a businessman who is totally used to ruling his empire as an autocrat. I cringe anytime I hear a candidate of either party campaigning on their success as businessperson.
Sounds about right!!!!

DharmaBum50 comments on Sep 28, 2019:
That can be a tough one. My late wife and I spent most of our marriage as nonbelievers with a Buddhist slant, but when she got cancer, she went back to the Catholic church. She never demanded that I convert, as your spouse is doing, but her newfound spirituality made discussions of whether or not we would see each other in an afterlife difficult. Religion sucks--I felt it tearing us apart at a difficult time when we should have been coming together. Good luck finding a resolution.

I lived in Asia and the Middle East for fifteen years, from 1985 to 2000. It was a dissatisfaction with the American way of life that drove me to leave the country for that amount of time in the first place, but as I acculturated overseas (especially in the Buddhist countries I lived in, not so much in the Muslim ones LOL), it became even more profound. I have been back "home" again for going on twenty years, but in the words of Thomas Wolfe, you can't go home again--especially as the country descends into this current weird combination of fascist corporatism and evangelical theocracy.
TRump moves troops to Saudi Arabia. The start of WW III is on the horizon.

DharmaBum50 comments on Sep 21, 2019:
Just for the record, this is actually a spurious quotation. https://www.monticello.org/site/research-and-collections/end-democracyspurious-quotation The closest actual quotation with this intent is from the Jefferson/George Logan letter of November 12, 1816, saying: "I hope we shall take warning ... and crush in its birth the aristocracy of our monied corporations which dare already to challenge our government to a trial of strength, and to bid defiance to the laws of their country." He was totally spot on with this observation, but unfortunately, the country has marched onward for two centuries heedless of his warning. In Donald tRump, we are merely witnessing the most extreme--and fascist--example of this heedlessness.
What happens if tRump gets indicted?

I haven't seen the TV series, but I read the book and saw the 1990 film, screenplay by playwright Harold Pinter. Both are creepy as hell because of how much American society currently seems hell-bent on making this fiction reality. What makes the film even more chilling for me is that parts of it were filmed in the part of North Carolina I'm from. I recognized some locales in Raleigh, and the hanging scene takes place in front of the Duke Chapel (I'm a Duke alumnus).
