AC/DC sings the blues [youtu.be]
FearlessFly comments on Feb 20, 2020:
"Ride On" is a song and single by Australian hard rock band AC/DC originally released on the album Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap and later re-released on the album Who Made Who. In both versions, the song is sung by Bon Scott. Atypically for an AC/DC song, it has a sad, slow blues, almost ballad-like feel to it. The lyrics concern a man reflecting on mistakes he has made in a relationship while drinking alcohol.

"Sweet Home Chicago" is a blues standard first recorded by Robert Johnson in 1936. Although he is often credited as the songwriter, several songs have been identified as precedents. The melody of "Sweet Home Chicago" is found in several blues songs, including "Honey Dripper Blues", "Red Cross Blues", and the immediate model for the song, "Kokomo Blues".

FearlessFly comments on Feb 19, 2020:
Drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr. stated that the song's lyrics were "largely about how when we were younger we felt invincible. What it meant to be a 'man' in your 20's. Sort of your chest out, the breadwinner, nothing could stop you, invincible sort of thing. It's sort of tongue-and-cheeking that, how that is not really the point of being a man at all. It's actually more about compassion and empathy."

The lyrics, however, were rewritten for this version to better reflect the show's subject matter.

After listening to an outtake of Gaye's 1982 album track, "Turn On Some Music" (titled "I've Got My Music" in its initial version), Sermon decided to mix the vocals (done in a cappella) and add it into his own song.

According to producer Tony Visconti, this line was an unscripted ad-lib by Bolan during recording.

The Guess Who - No Sugar Tonight [youtube.com]
FearlessFly comments on Feb 17, 2020:
According to Randy Bachman, the inspiration for the song arose after an incident when he was visiting California. He was walking down the street with a stack of records under his arm, when he saw three "tough-looking biker guys" approaching. He felt threatened and was looking for a way to cross the street onto the other sidewalk when a little car pulled up to the men. A woman about 5 feet tall got out of the car, shouting at one of them, asking where he'd been all day, that he had left her alone with the kids, didn't take out the trash, and was down here watching the girls. The man was suddenly alone when his buddies walked away. Chastened, he got in the car as the woman told him before pulling away: "And one more thing, you ain't getting no sugar tonight". The words stuck in Bachman's memory.

FearlessFly comments on Feb 17, 2020:
The song was conceived and written as a tribute and remembrance to their former band member Syd Barrett, a founding member of Pink Floyd. Barrett was ousted from the band by the other members in 1968 due to his drug use and (partly-related) troubled mental health, which had affected his ability to integrate with the rest of the band and perform and create as a musician.

Hawkins has also commented on the song's true meaning: "A sweet lady woman that you will never fully fathom or understand, but you love her so much that after a while it doesn't matter."

Dave Marsh said it was perhaps an "optimistic folk-rock narrative", whose characters are in a homeless shelter.

FearlessFly comments on Feb 16, 2020:
"Flight of the Bumblebee" is an orchestral interlude written by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov for his opera The Tale of Tsar Saltan, composed in 1899–1900. Its composition is intended to musically evoke the seemingly chaotic and rapidly changing flying pattern of a bumblebee. Despite the piece's being a rather incidental part of the opera, it is today one of the more familiar classical works because of its frequent use in popular culture.
There are some songs that just personify sex.
FearlessFly comments on Feb 16, 2020:
Despite being released as a single in 1990, it did not become a hit until it was later featured in the David Lynch film Wild at Heart (1990). Although it is often interpreted as a ballad about unrequited love, Isaak himself has said that the song was inspired by a telephone call from a girl seeking to arrange a casual sexual liaison and is about "what happens when you have a strong attraction to people that aren't necessarily good for you". It was written in short order following the call.

Neil Young - Heart Of Gold [youtube.com]
FearlessFly comments on Feb 15, 2020:
The song, which features backup vocals by James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt, is one of a series of soft acoustic pieces which were written partly as a result of a back injury. Unable to stand for long periods of time, Young could not play his electric guitar and so returned to his acoustic guitar, which he could play sitting down. He also played his harmonica during the three instrumental portions, including the introduction to the song

FearlessFly comments on Feb 15, 2020:
Brad Arnold stated that the main inspiration for the song was his now ex-wife. Arnold has also explained that the song was written about their lonely nights spent on the road promoting their band and how tough it was to be away from their significant others. "Here Without You" gives the listener a look into the mind of a man that is missing his girlfriend.
