I do not see why atheists (or agnostics ) should feel it is not a "welcome thought". Since most atheists do not generally feel the need for the existence of any theistic style free will. And therefore do not generally have a problem with the idea of genetic determinism, and that all things in human life follow from that. That is just silly. At least though, this is the first of these in which the point that it is the culture which "supplies the content" is plainly accepted and made, and there is not the foolish attempt at the logically impossible leap made from genetic determinism, programing natural values such as social compliance and a tendency to favour false positives over false negatives. To the idea that genetics render, plainly culturally designed artifacts, not found across all cultures anyway, such as the subset of belief known as theistic religions, inevitable. This fits with my point of view perfectly. I do wish you would be more careful in who you choose to quote.

Holidays can be a real pain, I never forget that the original meaning of the word is Holy-Days, days for religious ritual. I keep thinking that, in the UK, now we are practically a post christian country, we should scrap the lot, and instead just make it a law that all companies have to give all employees ten extra days payed leave each year, to be taken when it suits them. That would make for more free and happier employees, get rid of the lost days when everything closes, allow people to travel when it was cheap, and cut out the high pressure peaks on the roads and in the travel industry. Hope you are soon on the way to recovery.

The reason for believing that there are no races, is it has to be admitted a partially subjective value based one, but it is a very powerful subjective judgment based on a very remarkable scientific truth. Which mean that the human species as a whole is less genetically diverse that the average family of chimps, or litter of puppies, and we do not award race status to divisions of chimps or dogs.

There is of course the problem that the popular usage of the word 'theory' is different from the scientific usage. In popular usage, 'theory' has more or less the the same meaning as 'hypothesis', but in science it is a technical term, meaning a former hypothesis, which has been raised to a higher level because it is now supported by experimental and /or other empirical evidence. In part it is just the sort of confusion people get into when they think of words having meanings, when words do not have meanings only usages, which vary according to context. The problem is that some people of course welcome and will even try to promote misunderstanding.

Yes, it is based on the fact that it generally takes a lot longer to refute an argument, than it does to make it. I can say. "The moon is made of green cheese." But to show why it is not, you can not just say. "No it is made of rock." You have to add explanation and supporting evidence, or you just have an equal claim. It is especially pernicious when used by Gish and his followers, who regularly edit recording of debates to show their believers.
Is religious belief natural or man made?
Fernapple comments on Jul 3, 2021:
As Richard Dawkins pointed out. "Children are naturally credulous. Of course they are , what would you expect ? They arrive in the world knowing nothing, surrounded by adults who know by comparison, everything. Learning by trial and error is often a bad idea, because errors are too costly. If your mother tells you never to paddle in the lake because of the crocodiles, it is no good coming over all sceptical and adult. It is easy to see why natural selection might penalize an experimental and sceptical turn of mind and favour simple credulity in children. But this has an unfortunate by-product which can't be helped. If your parents tell you something which is not true, you must believe that too. Credulity as a survival device, comes as a package." But that is where belief differs from religion, because it is possible to believe in, and be taught, things which are true, even empirically true. There are crocodiles in the lake, but not, goblins in the hills. Belief even a genetic tendency to belief is not the same thing, at all, as religion.

More Churches Up in Flames in Canada as Outrage Against Catholic Church Grows

Sadly I think that it will only add fuel to the Catholic Church's cult of martyrdom. Across the world right now, tens of thousands of priests are probably telling their congregations. Fernapple comments on Jul 3, 2021:
I am sorry to say that a lot of it is part of the American cult of perpetual childhood, and the belief that you can have whatever you want, without any consequences or responsibilities. And that it is perfectly acceptable for grown adults to throw tantrums, as we saw with the Capitol invasion. The problem being, that if you build a culture, both political, religious and commercial entirely on selling, no one is going to try and sell consequences or responsibilities, they don't make money or earn votes. And so people get so used to living without them, and being told there are none, that they really start to believe they there are no consequences or responsibilities with anything. I do not like to be critical of other cultures, especially on a US site, and have to admit that America is not alone in this, we have a lot of it in the rest of the world, it is just that you seem to be the worlds leader in synthetic childishness.

Fernapple comments on Jun 30, 2021:
The jar is usually shaken by those who want to distract people from there own failings. Wars for example are not usually the results of conflicts between peoples, but are things promoted by governments. Because when governments are corrupt, incompetent or both, and they find themselves unable to resolve the domestic problems to the peoples satisfaction, the easy target on which to redirect the blame is foreigners. The cold war, was a perfect example, in the Soviet Block, Communism had failed to deliver, while at the same time, capitalism had also failed to deliver for many in the west. The two good things about the cold war, however, from the point of view of the governments involved, were that not only did it not involve much shooting, except by proxy in a few third world countries, but also, it was very sustainable long term. Is it any wonder that Putin, whose corrupt government is failing just about every domestic measure, wants to revive it. While I think that the failing of Christianity to deliver, may have a lot to do with its increasing links to sexism and racism etc. Yep if you want to know who shook the jar, look to see who failed on their promises, is a good start.

"The real offense of racism in the end, is to judge individuals by a supposed stereotype of their ...
Fernapple comments on Jun 30, 2021:
Yes all stereotypes are bad, for exactly that reason. "Assume makes an ass of you and me." ( Spelling joke.) Because we should never prejudge people, but find time to explore each person we meet fully and on their own terms. BUT therein lies the basic problem, because in a connected world with billions of inhabitants, we can not form a personal relationship with every single person we have to interact with, as we could in the days when we evolved our social instincts in groups of hunter gatherers, when we would meet perhaps a hundred people in our entire lives. Therefore we need stereotypes, and since many people do fit their stereotypes they would not seem to be too inaccurate a model of the human world. The best working answer would therefore seem to be, use just one stereotype, that of a stereotypical human and base that model on yourself. In other words the old, "Do as you would be done by." Until such time as the other person tells you that they have other requirements. I always therefore, as said before on here, assume that everyone is honest in private life, until proved otherwise, because I figure that I am strong enough to take one hit from anyone. And assume that everyone is dishonest in public and business life, because public and business life are impersonal anyway.

ok im baked and wanna pose a thought have human beings stopped evolving?
Fernapple comments on Jun 30, 2021:
Evolution acts fast when there is a change in the environment, and human culture and technology have made one of the most rapid changes in the environment ever seen by any creature. Being able to insulate yourself from certain environmental pressures, does not bring a stop to evolution, it only means that the pressures remaining become more important. That includes, especially, internal factors, such as sexual selection. One of the big effects of which, (Just for example, it is far from the only one.) will be the drive towards sexual dimorphism, which is normally blocked by environmental pressures. But when those pressures are removed, then there is nothing to stop males growing much bigger and more aggressive, and females growing smaller and more passive, because they are the types who breed most successfully. The ultimate feminist nightmare perhaps. Generally we may also grow more aggressive and loose emotions of social empathy, because society and breeding rewards aggression, while medical science, removes many of the consequences of aggression. For example a human who suffers a broken bone as a result of fighting will today survive, where in the past they would most likely die. If humans do survive the current global problems, such as global warming, then the effects of evolution will probably, be very evil to all those qualities we today regard as our higher functions, certainly leading to less social cohesion. ( There is some evidence, our brains have been shrinking rapidly since the agricultural revolution, as farmers no longer need the large brains of hunter gathers to survive, and the poorer diet puts a premium on not having large hungry organs like brains. ) Until eventually some crisis, perhaps quite a small one, such as the machines which feed us break down and we can not mend them anymore, comes along, which with small brains and poor social skills, we are unable to deal with, and we go extinct.

No I can see the same problem. And that everyone has to have just one of those two sexes, why not three or four ? Say a birth sex, the one entered on your birth certificate, a genetic sex determined by your genetics (of which there should be about five natural ones ), which could be used for sports, and a self defined sex, the one you choose for yourself which goes no your passport say.

The problem with that is that, when governments fail to deliver on that promise, (which is not a new one ), though corruption and/or incompetence. War and conflict have never been about threats from abroad, at least never on both sides, but always about failings at home, and the need to divert attention from those. Fernapple comments on Jun 22, 2021:

So that it could well be that we a conceding to theist imperialism, since they are trying to pretend that only theist religion, (god belief ) matters.

But no one would ever have reason to suppose that the model was ever anything but a representation and one of limited scope, or conversely that a representation is not itself a part of reality. Which is actually all rather wonderful.
