That's a bit like asking what is on the other side of the hill, without going to look, you can fill it with anything you like, and people do, but believing in inventions is not knowledge. The big difference between a religious mind set and a rational one, is that the rational is about recognizing. "I don't know." As the primary and best answer to most things, while religion is pretending knowledge which does not exist, to bluff others or avoid facing the unknown and your fear of it. Which brings it full circle back to speculation again, because speculation can be fun, rewarding, informative and good practice for thinking. But you lose all of that value, if you ever lose sight of the fact that it is speculation.

Cheap credit can be a useful tool in business. But the old rule, that you should never borrow more than you have easily transferable assets to pay back is a good one. In other words if you want to put up a market, and you borrow money to buy the land to put it on, that's fine. Because if it all goes wrong, the lender gets the land, so they loose nothing, and you are not in debt without income to pay for it. Everybody happy. But if you borrow money in private life to buy goods, like white goods for example, which loose value quickly, then you are a gambler, and like all gamblers you will probably crash someday.

People have identified over fifty different things which may have helped cause the empire to decline. From hyper-inflation, caused by massive imports but low exports, to lead poisoning, the failing of democratic accoutability, to plagues. And maybe that it simply grew itself to death, the bigger and more diverse it became the more it became filled with people who cared nothing for it, but far more for their local leaders and it failed to propagandize itself, well enough to make its thousands of new members care about it. That last is an interesting one, because of course Rome was the first major republican empire. Not an empire made by one wave of conquest led by a single king, but one which grew by stages, adopting the ruling classes of other nations as citizens, as often as not. Thereby making conquest easier, (many people even asked to be absorbed ), but becoming ever more culturally diverse and also, ever more divided against itself. That may seem to be an anti-liberal, anti-multicultural, message, but it is only so because the Romans also failed in their education/propaganda needed to explain the empire to its diverse subjects, and it also failed to reward people by preventing a deepening rich poor divide. (Yes that may sound familiar.) Three centuries ago, Gibbon was famously fond of the theory that Christianity was the cause, but while Christianity may have contributed a little, most people would agree today that gIbbons view was far too simplistic.

If you were raised religious as a child, what is your worst religious memory?

In the UK the law used to say that every school should have a daily religious service. My school was a very bad one, and had a lot of bullying as well. ( We all did it, I claim no exemption, because the one thing that bullying teaches you is how to bully yourself.) One of the boys however was disabled. So of course he got bullied more than most. One morning it was so bad that he could hardly walk or stand, because he was shaking so much with fear and pain, after being bullied very badly, in a vicious cruel way which surprised even those of us used to bullying. Afterward however, several of us helped to hold him up, and half carried him into the daily service, where we continued to help him stand, because missing service was considered a serious thing, and our distrust of our teachers was such that we did not expect any understanding. The tragic irony of what then happen however will never leave me, and was my most memorable school lesson. Because when the formal part of the service was over, the headmaster gave his daily speech/sermon, and the subject that day was: "How lucky we were to belong to a 'happy' school which did not have a culture of bullying." What made it even more striking was that everyone had said how lucky we were to have such a good headmaster, who was turning a bad school round. Which was probably true, it certainly got better under him. But what it did do was to make me lose all faith in authority, including and especially religious authority. Because since I am, and was, realistic enough to know that since some authority is needed in life, it is I now know, essential to ensure that authority is founded on solid bedrocks, such as, science, reason, good education and democratic checks. And not on old books, sky fairies, tradition, myth, cultural metaphor, superstition etc., which are only the resort of the bully and the tyrant, because they can not base their authority in reason.

There are I will admit some long term members who are biblical bores, and that is annoying. But a lot of the biblical stuff is posted by new members, trying to sound out the mood of the site, or seeking help for their issues with religion while using humour as wound dressing. It is best to cut them some slack, ignore the front page and engage with the groups if possible.

Politics was perhaps the only way out to avoid the humiliation of his failed business career. There was a lady in our village who, single handedly, ran a wool and sewing shop for fifty years. She payed herself a living, and filled her pension pot, after starting from next to nothing. She was a vastly better business and sales person than trump, by those measurements, even though she was not rich. Being a spoiled rich boy who is handed a business empire, which you then wreck, does not make you a businessman.

Basically that is all very true, except that I have a slight issue with. "the flu, as serious as it can be for at-risk populations, is relatively tamed compared to 100 years ago when it was a pandemic." Since there is no 'the flu' as such. The flu comes in at least 200 different basic strains, all of which have and can have, a different effect, and to all of which, the populations herd immunity, is different. There is therefore a real possibility of another major outbreak with widespread deadly consequences. There may be as yet unknown strains, and mutations, to which we have not yet vaccinated out there, or even for which we do not have vaccines yet. The great 1919 Swine Flu is a prime example of what could happen, since it was noted that it mainly killed young people. The reason for that being most probably, that a weaker but related strain had infected the older generations in the previous decades, perhaps several times, giving them a degree of immunity. I do not therefore think that we have 'tamed' the flu, we have just been lucky.

The complete inability to see how silly you look, is the first and most important qualification for every extremist. The ability to really see how silly you look, is the main qualification for being introverted. And the ability to see how silly you look and not care, makes you a pain in everyone else's behind. Yep, I see approval requests for new members comments all the time. You just click yes if it is not offensive or preaching. It may be that you will not see them if you spend time in groups not visited by new members, and/or if you live in a time zone where other members get to see their comments first. That may happen because there is a delay built in to new members content which is probably affected by the time zones/dateline.
