Full disclosure, I identify as an agnostic because I know it is impossible to prove the non-existence of a god whose description includes invisibility and inscrutability. However, I am functionally an atheist, because I rate the probability of God's existence at vanishingly small; practically nil. I tentatively reached this conclusion an an early age, and a lifetime of studying science has only reinforced it. Science reveals that no supernatural force is required to explain everything we see in nature. And virtually everything reported to be supernatural is found to be either a deceptive fraud or completely unsubstantiated claim.

Christianity only wins out (with about a third of the world population) because the vote is split among so many different religions. https://www.pewresearch.org/religion/2012/12/18/global-religious-landscape-exec/ I think the best policy vis-a-vis Christians is to pretend not to notice them while paying close attention to what they do in the way of seizing power, and then thwart them whenever possible. We must insist that our government remain a secular one at all costs. The separation clause of the 1st Amendment must be our north star. Christians are intent on abrogating that social contract. They must not succeed!

I was reading about the 'melting pot'.
Flyingsaucesir comments on Feb 14, 2023:
A "melting pot" was how it was presented to us in elementary school. At least superficially, it's an undeniable fact. What was left out of the description (which i first heard in the 1960s) was an implicit belief in a certain hierarchy. The melted elements do not form a single homogeneous mass. Rather, there is, in the minds of many, a stratification, with white men at the top, and black women on the bottom, and several layers in between. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was the first serious legislative attempt (in my lifetime) to disrupt that hierarchy. The passage of the law, by itself, was not enough to mix the crucible contents. There has been pushback since the gitgo. The melting pot a work in progress.
My idea of perfect happiness is a healthy family, peace between nations, and all the critics die.
Flyingsaucesir comments on Feb 14, 2023:
I have been reading the New Yorker for going on 50 years now. It's a great magazine, and "The Critics" section is sometimes the best part. A good critic brings together many disparate elements, places things in context, and shows us connections we might not otherwise see.

Flyingsaucesir comments on Feb 7, 2023:
The pandemic was, for me, "over" after I got my second shot, which completed the original vaccination protocol. In fact, the pandemic never affected me that much anyway. I'm retired and live alone, so I don't have to be around people. For the first year I wore a mask to go grocery shopping. That was not a hardship. I went on a lot of long bike rides and also did some hiking. As soon as vaccines were available I got the two Pfizer shots. Then I started remodeling my house. Home Depot became my home away from home. That was just about two years ago now. I'm doing the work myself, so it's taking a long time. I've had lots of people come sailing with me on my boat. I don't wear a mask anymore. I've already had two booster shots. We had the full-on family gathering at Christmas. Everybody was vaccinated, boosted, and healthy. Nobody wore a mask. I'm hearing news about people I know (and some I don't know) who never got the vaccine and are sick with COVID-19, or recovering from it. For them, the pandemic is not over.

When I was younger, these massive disasters were a rarity.
Flyingsaucesir comments on Feb 6, 2023:
Your sense of the situation is correct; the frequency of natural disasters has increased in our lifetime. But it's important to qualify that statement. The increase is not coming from geologic activity, e.g. earthquakes, tsunamis, or volcanic eruptions. The types of disasters that are on the rise are weather-related, e.g. drought, forest fires, inundating rains, hurricanes, tornadoes, sea level rise, heat waves. The increase in these phenomena is due to anthropomorphic (human-caused) climate change, which we have brought about through the burning of fossil fuels, i.e. coal, gasoline, diesel fuel, kerosine [jet fuel], bunker oil, and natural gas [methane]. If you want this bad trend to turn around, stop burning fossil fuels!

Why does anyone need a god?
Flyingsaucesir comments on Feb 5, 2023:
I seem to get along fine without a god. #1. I don't need to blame shit on God. That's what Republicans are for. #2. There is some chaos, obviously. Just look at Ukraine. But God isn't sending in those missiles. There is a practical solution. Kill Putin. #3. There is no one person or God in charge. It's complicated. Get over it. #4. I'm not uneducated. I can think for myself. I don't need central planning from on high. #5. I don't fear death. I think I might actually find it a relief. #6. The dead are gone for good. We only get one shot at life. Walt Whitman said we're like leaves of grass. Get over it. #7. Rather than fighting back against a powerful force, try going, at least partly, with the flow. That's how you get out of a rip current. #8. My family didn't and I wasn't. #9. I don't seek power over others. Too much responsibility. Not even Pascal's wager (#10 on the list) interests me in the slightest.

Having done that exploration, I have not felt the need to do any more hallucinogens since then. It's been 40+ years now. Wow, time flies.

Every single human being on the planet was born an Atheist.
Flyingsaucesir comments on Jan 28, 2023:
It's a tempting proposition, but I would think twice before taking a bite out of that apple. Religion (superstitious belief in unseen, intentional, powerful, willful personalities) has spontaneously cropped up in every culture throughout human history. The reason for this is that we are social beings, and millions of years of evolution have hard-wired our brains to interpret the world in terms of personality and intention. Hence it is difficult for some people to accept that the universe operates only according to the cold and impersonal laws of physics, chemistry, and biology. Add to that the false (yet appealing) promise of an afterlife, of being reunited with dead loved ones, of eternal bliss, and you have the biggest, most profitable scam ever perpetrated.

I think a part of the appeal of religion is from nostalgia.
Flyingsaucesir comments on Jan 19, 2023:
Steven Van Zandt, legendary guitarist in Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, has weighed in on why today's music is lackluster. For one thing, he points out that new technology has allowed any bumpkin in his basement to produce an album. That in itself is not the problem. The problem is that basement boy skips the years of playing small venues, getting up in front of live audiences and learning his chops, and finding out works and what doesn't. Also, Van Zandt points out that the music has shifted genres. From 1965 to 1994, rock and roll dominated. From '95 on, pop has been ascendant. [I will add that pop music (especially techno and house) lends itself to soulless, contrived, basement production. And the reason that big venue, live pop is usually accompanied by elaborate stage design, over-the-top lighting, lots of costume change, and dozens of dancers is that the music on its own, stripped of the extraneous frills, does not stand up. IMHO.]
I think a part of the appeal of religion is from nostalgia.
