@Fernapple I have maintained for a long time that moderate religionists are enablers of their more fanatical brethren. Around the world, fundamentalist sects are the most dangerous, the most violent, the most determined to gain power, and the most willing to twist and cherry pick their own creed to suit that end. In the USA, we find nominal Catholics and Protestants among the ranks of the Christian nationalists, but the vast majority of them are Evangelical Christians. They are our own, home grown, American Taliban.

@BDair The peer-reviewed journal articles I have read say that while hydroxychloroquin can bind to the SARS CoV-2 spike protein in vitro, controlled studies of use of the drug in COVID-19 patients show that people taking the drug do not clear the viral infection any faster than people who do not take hydroxychloroquin. In other words, the efficacy of hydroxychloroquin in fighting COVID-19 is dubious at best. Further, the articles list an array of undesirable side effects from use of hydroxychloroquin, including gastrointestinal issues and heart arrhythmia. So hydroxychloroquin as a therapy for COVID-19 fails in two counts: it's not safe, and it's not effective.

@Castlepaloma No one knows for sure why case and death rates appear to be lower in Africa. Here are a few possible explanations: Having gone through multiple epidemics of ebola, Africans have become habituated to dealing with infectious disease by using simple but effective low tech methods like mask-wearing and social distancing to prevent disease transmission. Compared to Americans, they're really good at it. It also helps that most Africans live in rural communities where social distancing is easier. Also, Africa misses many more cases than other parts of the world because it has far less testing capacity. Infection and death reporting in Africa, as in other underdeveloped countries, is not what it is in developed countries. COVID-19 kills older people more than younger ones. Africa has a much lower median age than North America and Europe. Africans apparently have a longer history of exposure to SARS viruses. They could have built up immunity over time. Africans are frequently exposed to a wide range of pathogens, including malaria, Dengue fever, West Nile virus, etc., etc. Their immune systems may be better primed to deal with whatever comes along. Next question?

Flyingsaucesir replies on Jul 11, 2022:
@BDair Here are the data from the PubMed article you provided: 1626 cases of myocarditis were found in a group of 192,405,448 vaccinated individuals. The study did not determine how many of those myocarditis cases were actually attributable to the vaccine. Let's assume, for the sake of argument, that all of the myocarditis cases in this study were caused by the vaccine. That would mean individuals in this group had a .0000084 chance of getting myocarditis as a result of the vaccine. In other words, their chance of getting myocarditis from the vaccine was 1 in 118,768. The death rate from myocarditis is very low, and the evidence so far shows those with myocarditis after COVID-19 vaccines recover quickly. Your chances of getting myocarditis from having COVID-19 are 30 times higher than from the vaccine. (!) The death rate from COVID-19 among people 18 to 34 years of age is 1.7% (according to the California Department of Health). In other words, 17 out of every thousand 18 to 34-year-olds who contract COVID-19 die from it. In a world where no one is vaccinated against COVID-19, your chances of eventually contracting the virus is about 100% In California alone that would translate to about 1,836,000 (one million eight hundred thirty-six thousand!) 18 to 34-year-olds dying from COVID-19. Happily, the vast majority of Californians are vaccinated, and we are not suffering casualties at anywhere near that rate. Bottom line, it is far, FAR riskier to get COVID-19 than it is to be vaccinated against COVID-19.

Who said anything about 3 years? This is a catastrophe that will play out over centuries. It is also true we are seeing effects measurable on the scale of years or decades, so rapid are the changes taking place. The effects of increased greenhouse gases are all around us: melting glaciers, rising sea levels, intense and prolonged drought and resultant forest fires, increased atmospheric moisture and resultant flooding, movement of habitat ranges of some species (including pathogenic ones) toward the poles or uphill as they seek to compensate for higher temperatures, extinction of species that cannot move or have nowhere to go, melting of permafrost and resultant release of methane and CO2, etc., etc. All of these things were predicted by climate scientists, but the changes are happening faster than expected. @Buck @Buck Rachel Maddow is a multi-millionaire, and she's not heterosexual. Michael Jordan is a multi-millionaire, and he's not white; Jerry Seinfeld is a multi-millionaire, and he's not Christian. Ask any of them what they think of this country. The 6 "conservatives" on the Court are not nut jobs; they are intelligent and educated individuals. I have to admit that, even though I disagree vehemently with some of their rulings. Four of them have committed serious ethical breaches. Thomas should have recused himself from the White House documents case involving his wife. Given the very believable testimony of Anita Hill, his nomination arguably should never have been confirmed. Coney-Barret, Kavenaugh, and Gorsuch all prevaricated in their confirmation hearings, misleading the Judiciary Committee into thinking that they respect stare decisis more than they actually do. Kavenaugh also has a problem similar to that of Thomas. I found Ms. Blasey-Ford very credible. It's obvious that right-wing ideology is now driving SCOTUS decisions. But it would be a mistake to underestimate these people. They are very canny operators. It will be a challenge, going forward, to argue successfully for certain liberal causes. But not impossible. The question of a right to abortion has been kicked back to the states. That is not the end of the world. It means people will have to get off their asses and vote for their preference. It could actually result in a major shift in the balance of political power. Overturning Roe could very well blow up in Republicans' faces. As for expanding concealed carry, I am ambivalent on that. Criminals don't care about the law; they are already carrying. Allowing law-abiding citizens to carry legally levels the playing field. If I had my druthers, no one would carry. But that's not the world we live in. As for public money going to religious schools, I think it's a horrible idea. But the Maine ruling is actually rather limited. It says that if the state gives money to private schools, it has to give money to ALL private schools, religious and non-religious alike. If the people of Maine don't want to fund religious schools, they can simply stop giving money to private schools. (I don't see why private schools should receive public money anyway. Do you?) Finally, the last big ruling this term involved the EPA's authority to regulate CO2. I think this is the worst decision of all, given that climate change is an existential threat to millions of species including our own. @Buck [A] It's not a shit-hole country. It's a good country with some serious problems. [B] I don't even know what "a case on creationism" means. [C] I don't get all worked up about shit that hasn't even happened, and may not ever happen. When was the last time the Supreme Court heard a case on creationism? In Edwards v. Aguillard, 482 U.S. 578 (1987), the Supreme Court held that a Louisiana law mandating instruction in “creation science” whenever evolution was taught in public schools violated the establishment clause of the First Amendment. I don't think they would even hear another such case. Do you see a massive grassroots movement, anything comparable to the anti-abortion movement, in favor of teaching creationism? No. What compelling argument could he put forward to make the Court hear such a case? I can't think of one.

Flyingsaucesir replies on Jul 4, 2022:
@Jolanta In a country of 325 million people with this many guns there are going to be shootings. But this is not the biggest thing we have to worry about. In the short term, it's white Christian nationalism or theocratic fascism. We have to tamp that down first, because their aim is to keep the filthy rich wealthy. That means keeping the status quo vis-a-vis burning fossil fuels. We can't have action to combat climate change until that old guard is shoved aside. That will require political will. The fossil fuels industry has so far been able to delay the inevitable by casting doubt on science. But as climate disaster becomes a reality for more and more people, denial is becoming less and less effective. I think we are approaching the point where the old liars are going to be discredited widely enough to turn the tide. I am hopeful because younger people know that they are staring down the barrel of a gun, that they will not he able to live out their natural lives without being severely slammed by climate change. They don't just want change; they NEED change; they DEMAND change. And they are the future. Mist of the bad shit that the USA has done over the last century was done in order to keep oil and gas flowing. The Marine Corp anthem goes, "From the halls of Montezuma to the shores if Tripoli..." Why those places? Because Libya and Mexico are sitting on lots of OIL! Imagine a world where fossil fuel is no longer a factor; one where all energy is harvested locally, from the sun, from wind, from tides, and from the Earth's internal heat. Breaking up energy suppliers will have a democratizing effect on the whole world.

@Betty In my experience culture comes down from the top. In corrupt cultures, the underlings collect the proceeds (from extortion, bribery, bookmaking, blackmail, robbery, pimping, prostitution, sale of illicit guns, drugs, stolen merchandise, etc., etc.), take a small slice for themselves and pass the rest on to their superior. And so it goes up the chain. Napoleon Bonaparte pioneered this system, sending his woefully underpaid tax collectors out with the understanding that they would supplement their own salaries on the job.

The playbook is simple: find a convenient scapegoat or two (say, immigrants and welfare mothers; throw in some tree huggers for good measure), jump up and down while screaming about high taxes, defund the schools and water down school discipline so the level of discourse is set by the lowest common denominator, flood the country with guns so everyone is terrorized into keeping their heads down, flood social media with disinformation and wacko conspiracy theories, keep the Kardashians in the spotlight and cast aspersions on intellectuals, indoctrinate the youth in the fallacy that unregulated market capitalism is self-correcting and solves all problems, set up some think tanks to produce slick brochures full of specious arguments casting doubt on science, claim the moral high ground on hot-button cultural issues like abortion and gun rights, bribe some politicians, blackmail some others, pay lip service to the sanctimonious church pricks, get the Supreme Court to allow unlimited dark money in politics, and voila! The rich get richer and the average American is consigned to perpetual serfdom!

Unbeknownst to me, this 40-litre Florence flask had sat unused in storage for years. It had been donated to the school by County Sheriff, who had confiscated it from an illegal drug lab. The Science Dept. Chair was going to throw it in the trash. I rescued it, made a base for it, and used it as a classroom fish tank. 🙂
