Flyingsaucesir replies on Apr 19, 2022:
@holdenc98 Actually, he is right; there is no biological basis for what we call "different human races." In fact, there are more phenotypic differences among the individuals within a so-called racial group than there are between supposed "different" groups. It's important to get that straight at the outset of any discussion on race. Why? Because it obviates any temptation to ascribe different sociological or cultural differences to genetic differences. There simply are not enough genetic differences between, say, blacks and whites to explain the huge disparity in incomes, personal wealth, general health, representation in positions of power, etc., etc. So how do we explain these differences, if not by referring to genetics? Well, that's complicated, but any honest attempt to understand how we got here must certainly include a frank acknowledgement of trauma and systematic withholding of opportunity. Slavery was traumatic for the enslaved. The campaign of terror waged by the KKK on black people for generations was traumatic. (Imagine that your uncles and/or brothers were lynched, or your entire town was attacked by by a mob because of the color of the skin color of its inhabitants.) People do not get over such abuse overnight; it might take generations. And recovery takes even longer if those generations are systematically discriminated against in jobs, housing, education, access to medical care, etc. And so here we are. As I said earlier, we will not get past this history until we address it head-on, frankly and honestly. When we do, we will finally live up to the ideals that the founding fathers laid out in the Constitution.

Only philosophers and theologians seek truth. We scientists seek models. And models are not the truth. ***TL;DR: anytime you see anyone promoting "truth", you know they are lying.*** 😏
Flyingsaucesir replies on Apr 19, 2022:
Hmmm... I understand your caution, but I'm inclined to allow the word "truth" to be used in describing what science uncovers, or the models it develops (at least in certain contexts). Let me explain. Take, for instance, the theory of plate tectonics (a model), which explains why the continents look like they once fit together, why there are volcanic mid-ocean ridges running all over the world like the stitching on a baseball, why the Pacific Ocean is ringed with volcanoes, why fossil mollusks are found near the top of Mt. Everest, and many more interesting facts. The theory explains that all these facts thusly: the Earth's crust is composed of relatively rigid plates that ride around on convection currents in the mantle, sometimes colliding and sometimes pulling apart, sometimes subducting. Now compare that scientific explanation with a religious one (there are many, but we'll use just one for now) that it replaced, which said that volcanoes and earthquakes are the result of the god Vulcan working at his forge in the underworld. The contrast between the two explanations is stark. And one of them is true, while the other is definitely false. The theory of plate tectonics is rock solid and, while it is constantly being updated around the edges, it's basic premises are not going to change. It represents the truth about the origin of earthquakes, volcanoes, mid-ocean ridges, etc., at least when compared to any of the religious tales that preceded it. We can say the same thing about Darwin's theory of evolution, which has withstood all challenges for 150 years and can be described as truth when compared to the false explanation for the origin of species given in the Bible. So yes, I'm going to allow the word "truth" to be used to describe science, at least in some cases.

@Triphid Murdering one's wife, 3 kids, and dog because you think the Apocalypse is coming is crazy on its face. However, it is not for you or me, but for a criminal court to decide on a remedy. Even if the defendant's attorney tries to build an insanity defence, there is no guarantee that it will fly. If a jury finds that the guy knew what he was doing was wrong, he will be held criminally responsible. That would not necessarily mean that he wasn't mentally ill. Personally, I think that a crazy act like murdering your family is bound to be rooted in mental illness. That's my opinion based on the slim set of facts presented in the link article. Try not to let it bother you bra. You'll give yourself a stroke. 🤣

But I can imagine having a conversation with someone who said the don't believe the science, and I might reply that I do...and then I would start wheeling out the evidence. 😉

I think what you are calling a "Ukrainian coup" was what most of us know as their Orange Revolution, where they kicked out a Putin puppet regime and chose their own path forward. They stumbled a bit, continued to have trouble with corruption, then recently elected Zelensky. He made a little headway in cleaning things up, was stymied by the old guard, but never gave up. Then Putin invaded, and here we are. A fledgling democracy is fighting for its life. Had he remained in office, Trump would have held up aid to Ukraine even more than he did in his one disastrous term. You also alluded to the fiasco in Iraq, correctly pointing out that we went in under false pretenses. Who's fingerprints are on that? Those of George W. Bush, Dick Cheyne, Condoleeza Rice, and Donald Rumsfeld, aka the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. You dare to cite Ron Paul Institute to me? That little shit is a certified wack-job if there was one. PS: Assad did use chemical weapons in Syria. No question about that. And Putin bombed hospitals, schools, and private homes there, just like he's doing right now in Ukraine. He's a war criminal, no doubt about that.

It sounds like you have a pretty good grasp of the situation, and I'm not telling you anything you don't already know. I'm glad you steered the conversation in this direction. Russians are carrying out genocide against Ukrainians as we speak. Putin is like a schoolyard bully. If you give in to his demands, he will only demand more. We all understand this. The only thing that will change Putin's mind about his current adventure is defeat on the battlefield. If he were to succeed in Ukraine, he would only be emboldened to continue. This we cannot allow, as it threatens democracy everywhere. We people who are accustomed to liberty, would rather die than live under the tyranny of a criminal like Putin. You think you scare us with your thinly-veiled threats if nuclear holocaust? You do not. @FrayedBear It's true that the USA has done some very bad stuff: getting involved stupid wars in Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan top my list. And there is more, including propping up dictators in Central and South America....yeah, we agree on that. But we have also done good things, like building up Europe and Japan post WWII, and providing lots of aid to people struggling around the world. The USA is far from perfect, but we continue to stumble forward towards a better version of ourselves. We leave that potential open. I would say it is a harder path than one where you simply relinquish all hope and responsibility for self-improvement to a deeply corrupt autocratic system where individual expression fades to a monotonous grey, where people are fed a steady diet of disinformation, where the complicated, multicultural history of a people is reduced to a simplistic fairy tale where time stopped for 1000 years after the birth and baptism of a Viking prince.

@FrayedBear The old geezer got more done in 12 months than Trump did in 48, including getting a BIG infrastructure bill passed, and successfully combatting a global pandemic. He also patched up the damage Trump did to our relations with our NATO allies, and is doing a good job leading the free world's effort to help Ukraine defend herself against a nuclear-armed genocidal maniac. Let's see...what else? Oh yeah, he appointed a magnificently qualified jurist to the Supreme Court, the economy has grown gangbusters, and the unemployment rate is at a historic low. So, you're sure old Joe has done nothing? 🤣🤣🤣

@Trajan61 The Keystone XL should never have been started. Firstly, it crosses tribal lands where they don't want it. We should respect their wishes, and I think they have good reasons to object. Ecologically sensitive habitats and water supplies are endangered by the pipeline. There never was a pipeline that didn't leak sooner or later. Furthermore, we should be moving away from fossil fuels anyway. Their continued combustion is driving us toward climate catastrophe. The warming that has already occurred is costing us upwards of 100 billion dollars a year in damages from wind, flood, fire, drought, expansion of the ranges of pathogen-carrying insects, and sea level rise. And this is only the tip of the proverbial iceberg. If we blow past the tipping points in the natural system, then it's basically game over. You won't have to worry about inflation, because there wont be an economy.

Man, you can't lay the inflation rate on Joe Biden! That was set up by fiscal policy going back decades! Borrowing trillions of dollars to carry out the Iraq war fiasco had WAY more to do with today's inflation than anything Biden has done. Hell, he's only been in office 16 months! You are really funny! 😂 And as for war, Joe Biden got us OUT of the only one American soldiers were actively participating in (that is, Afghanistan). If you're talking about Ukraine, Trump's attempt to extort a personal favor from Zelensky by threatening to withhold military aid (aid Ukraine needed to fight off Russia's aggression) no doubt emboldened Putin to escalate his crimes against humanity there. If that fat fuck Trump had had his way, the NATO alliance would be far less unified right now, and Putin might be much better situated to obliterating a democratic nation. Thanks to Joe Biden's leadership, the Alliance is strong and Putin is getting his ass kicked. Glory to Ukraine! Dude, you are truly hilarious! 🤣🤣🤣

Here's another truth, this one not universal, but damn close: the mRNA vaccines against COVID-19 are safe and effective. Another: Critical Race Theory is not taught in K-12 public schools; it's a graduate-level college course. Another: Donald J. Trump incited a mob to attack the Capitol on January 6, 2021. A truly spectacular record of achievement! I don't even want to contemplate the disaster that that double-dufus, walking-brain-fart, Trump would have made of the same situation.

Flyingsaucesir replies on Apr 7, 2022:
Sad but true. But Manchin (and Sinema) can get away with their intransigence only because large majorities in their constituencies don't really appreciate just how dangerous climate change really is. It is, at its root, an educational problem. The fossil fuel industry, through its think tanks and lobbyists, has succeeded in casting doubt on the science, with the result that large portions of the electorate don't know what to believe. But reality has a way of busting through. Twenty years ago, the damage caused annually by climate change was costing Americans around 17 billion dollars a year. Now the price tag is closer to one hundred billion dollars a year. And in another two decades it could be over half a trillion dollars a year. The fact is, the warming of the planet is accelerating, and we are fast approaching tipping points in the natural system which, once passed, will be irreversible and will bring on widespread catastrophe. And we may get there sooner than most people think, if we don't change course immediately. The good news is that the technology needed to replace fossil fuels has already been invented. We just need to scale up its use.
